Mike White has quietly gotten Georgia to a terrific 10-3 start in his first year in Athens.

The Bulldogs can "move the needle" tonight at home against Auburn.

Tigers are 3-1 in games decided by five points or fewer.

A familiar foe in a new setting is adding a layer to Auburn's rivalry w/ Georgia.

While the Tigers have won 8 of their last 10 against the Bulldogs, new Georgia coach Mike White's teams have been a thorn in the side for Bruce Pearl's squads over the years

Georgia downs No. 22 Auburn, earns first ranked SEC win since early 2020

QuoteBulldogs basketball team pulled off a huge win over No. 22 Auburn Wednesday, winning 76-64 in Athens. That's Georgia's first win over a ranked SEC opponent since February of 2020, when the Bulldogs knocked off No. 20 Auburn.

Senior guard Terry Roberts led the way for the Bulldogs, totaling 26 points and 2 assists. Kario Oquendo added an impressive 17 points with 4 rebounds, helping lead the Bulldogs to a 1-0 start in SEC play. Georgia has not started conference play with a win since the 2016-17 season.

Observations from No. 22 Auburn's 76-64 loss at Georgia

QuoteJohni Broome's 22 points and 12 rebounds weren't enough to keep No. 22 Auburn from losing 76-64 in Wednesday's rivalry game against Georgia on the road.

Broome scored the first seven points for the Tigers after the Bulldogs jumped to a 5-0 lead. K.D. Johnson hit a three with 15:20 left in the first half for the first points by a Tiger other than Broome. Auburn trailed by one point after Johnson briefly silenced the fans from his former school.

Georgia pushed its lead back out to 11 with a Kario Oquendo layup at the 10:08 mark. Qquendo finished the game with 17 points. Wendell Green tied the game with one of his two buckets with a little over six minutes in the first half.

Terry Roberts scored two of his 26 points to regain the lead. Allen Flanigan gave Auburn its only lead with 4:12 left in the half on a jumper off a rebound. Roberts struck again 14 seconds later with a layup. Georgia regained the lead on the bucket by Roberts and never trailed again.

"Didn't get off to a very good start, which you have to on the road in order to win, and they did, which gave them some confidence," head coach Bruce Pearl.

Auburn will host No. 13 Arkansas on Saturday at Neville Arena.

Coaches in the SEC will not be surprised that Georgia is 11-3 under Mike White.

REMEMBER: Prior to last season, there was one SEC that that won at least a game in the previous four NCAA Tournaments --- Florida.

The Breakfast Buffet: Kansas/Kansas State, Fletcher Loyer, Mike White returns to Rupp Arena with Georgia

QuoteMike White's first game at Rupp Arena as Georgia's head coach
People from the periphery will look at tonight's matchup as Kentucky's first game following its big win on Saturday at Tennessee, but White's 13-4 start at Georgia is also a major storyline. The Bulldogs won just six games last season and White — who came to Athens last spring from Florida — has done as good of a coaching job as anyone so far this season. White never got credit for the job that he did at Florida because he wasn't Billy Donovan, but it should be pointed out that prior to last season, the Gators were the only program in the SEC to win a game in the previous four NCAA Tournaments (and that was the problem). White was 2-5 at Rupp Arena during his tenure at Florida.

If you're wondering why we're not making a bigger deal out of the Tennessee athletic director and Florida Atlantic athletic director being brothers, the reason is I'm pretty sure that family is required to have one member at all 363 NCAA Division I schools at all times.

Mike White attends NCAA Tournament Elite 8 game featuring former player, assistant
Crissy Froyd | 24 minutes ago

QuoteGeorgia head basketball coach Mike White recently paid a visit to a friend.

White flew up to Madison Square Garden on Saturday to watch Keyontae Johnson, one of the best players he's ever had under him, and former assistant Dusty May from his Florida days. Johnson's No. 3-seeded Kansas State Wildcats faced May's No. 9-seeded Florida Atlantic University Owls in the Elite 8.

The game didn't end in the Wildcats' favor the way Johnson wanted it to, as May's Owls ultimately topped Kansas State, 79-76 on the hardwood.

Mike White finally reacts to Dusty May, former assistant, taking FAU to program's first Final Four

Quote"Wow! Cloud Nine," White said to Katz. "The best hire in the history of college basketball and the best coaching job done in any single season, ever, in my opinion. Are you kidding me? The FAU Owls going to the Final Four. Wow.

"He's amazing. He's relentless," White said of his brother. "Incredible hire. Obviously great relationship, alignment with Dusty. I'm so happy for him."

There fixes Georgia should consider making to compete in college basketball

Here are some of them

Justin Nails | 30 minutes ago

QuoteMike White has to figure out how to keep talent in-state
Talent matters. It matters even more when your state is a top 5 producing state when it comes to such talent. The 2023 Georgia basketball recruiting class ranks 40th with 2 players signed, only 1 from the state of Georgia.

Georgia's had talented players before and they'll get talented players again, but it is tough to look at the top players in the 2023 cycle and notice that none of the players ranked in the top 50 are headed to Athens this Fall. Newton's Stephon Castle (ranked 9th overall) is headed to UConn, and Overtime Elite's Robert Dillingham (ranked 13th overall) is headed to Kentucky. I'll spare you the rest of the list, but it's a long list of guys leaving the state to go play elsewhere.

White has to figure out how to keep that talent home. And now with NIL and the transfer portal affording places like Georgia an upper hand, White and his staff could see some talent want to come home and play.

The beauty of being athletically rich like Georgia is that you only need to spend your money wisely once to see a big return in basketball.

Win and win now
The most obvious solution to the problem.

Is White the answer? Let's just say that those who were skeptical of the hire remain so.

He had some success at Florida, leading the Gators to the NCAA Tournament 4 times and reaching the Elite (Eight) once.

White had more NCAA Tournament wins at Florida (6) than Georgia has had in the past 40 years combined.

In his first season at Georgia, White turned a 6-26 team into a respectable 16-16. And while that is a great start, 3 more SEC teams reached the Sweet 16, including Alabama, which was the No. 1 overall seed. Eight SEC teams made the tournament and 2 more made the NIT.

The climb is steep —

Ole Miss just hired Chris Beard, so they'll look to bounce back quickly. Jerry Stackhouse has Vanderbilt winning and believing in him. Texas and Oklahoma are on their way.

Georgia has way too many tools at their disposal to continue to struggle as a basketball school. If White doesn't get this turned around quickly enough, a change has to be made.

Long gone are the days of "football schools" and "basketball schools" or "baseball schools."

The standard is that these programs compete at a high level in all big sports.

Tennessee, Alabama, and Arkansas were all in the Sweet 16. They all have coaches who can win in the postseason (at least the first game or two at Bama and Tennessee) and they all seem to have the backing of the football programs and fans as well.

Mike White addresses Georgia's rebounding issues against Florida

by:
Griffin McVeigh

QuoteWhen Georgia found itself down big against Florida, they were still able to put up a fight and get the game back to overtime. An incredible 51 points were scored in the second half. Unfortunately for Mike White, his team wound up falling a little short, losing by four points.

Looking at the box score, one of the biggest discrepancies was in the rebounding department. Florida had 48 rebounds and bested Georgia by 19 boards. Looking at the offensive rebounds, the Gators doubled their rivals up, finishing with 16.

White addressed Georgia getting outmatched, saying there was not anything they could have done. Florida is efficient on the glass, especially on the offensive end. The effort was there in White's opinion and they just lost out to the Gators' strength.

"Huge deficiency there," White said. "But they're big. It's not like we did a poor job with throwing our bodies around and playing with physicality. I mean, our guys fought. But Florida is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country. They pursue it. They've got depth with their offensive rebounding. They've got size, length, and of course, athleticism. Obviously, the emphasize it and they capitalize."

Mike White answers if being in postseason conversation is weighing on Georgia
by:
Sam Gillenwater

QuoteAfter a 12-3 start to the season, Georgia will now be fighting for their lives for a shot at the NCAA Tournament this month after going 2-5 over their last seven. It's a position that's an unfavorable one but is a spot that they now find themselves in after not seeming to handle the pressure well as of late.

Mike White discussed the Bulldogs' potential issue dealing with the tension following their latest, 72-62 loss to South Carolina:

"I'm not sure," said White. "Potentially. Yeah."

Mike White stresses difficulty of going through SEC schedule

by:
Thomas Goldkamp

QuoteGeorgia has lost seven of its last eight games, floundering after looking like a potential NCAA Tournament team at one point earlier in the season. Coach Mike White is searching for answers.

But the bottom line is that the SEC is just an incredibly difficult league.

"It's just been an incredible, what, five weeks? It seems like just about every game we play an NCAA Tournament team," Mike White said.

In the last eight games, Georgia has rarely been favored to win. The team did knock off lowly Vanderbilt, snapping a six-game losing skid. But for the most part, the going has been tough.

White alluded to that fact.

"I want to say South Carolina at home, maybe we were favored, maybe we weren't by a point," he said. "Maybe they were favored. And there are a lot of games where you're a significant dog, underdog, against really, really good competition."

Auburn toasted Georgia over the weekend, blowing the Bulldogs out 97-76 in game that was never really all that close. It was the first time in a few weeks that Georgia had been truly blown out, after a series of close calls during the losing skid.

"It's a great league to be in right now," Mike White said. "We obviously are more competitive. We want to be even more competitive. We want to get in the upper half of this league. We plan on being there. But there are so many teams in this league first off that are going to make the tournament."

After seeing Auburn in person for the first time this season, White offered a little more.

"There are more than a couple, there are a few (teams), that, like Auburn, that have a realistic shot of making a deep run," White said.

Georgia rallies late to defeat Mizzou, advance in SEC Tournament
Andrew Olson |

QuoteGeorgia's late run lifted the Bulldogs to an SEC Tournament victory over Mizzou.

The Tigers, who did not defeat an SEC team this season, came out strong in the 2nd half. Mizzou had its largest lead of the game, 43-35, with 14:07 to go.

With 3:38 to go, a Sean East II layup extended MU's lead to 59-52 with 3:38 to go. Mizzou went cold at the wrong time, failing to score again in the game.

The Tigers missed their last 7 field-goal attempts as Georgia notched a 12-0 run, its largest of the game. UGA's Justin Hill put the Bulldogs up 60-59 when he made a 3-pointer with 1:43 to go in the game.

Mizzou missed 4 field-goal attempts while trailing 60-59. Hill returned to the line with 15 seconds to go and made it 62-59. MU's Noah Carter got a good look from 3-point range to tie. His shot did not fall.

Georgia's Blue Cain got the rebound and was promptly fouled, making 2 free throws to extend the lead to 64-59, the game's final score.

Cain was the game's high scorer with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, including 5 3-pointers with 2 free throws.

UGA coach Mike White was mindful of Georgia being in a tournament. Cain played the most with 31 minutes. Russel Tchewa was the only other Bulldog to play 30 minutes in the game.

Georgia moves on to face familiar foe
By beating Mizzou, UGA advances to play No. 11-seed Florida in the second round of the conference tournament.

The Bulldogs have faced the Gators, White's former team, twice this season.

Mike White shares Georgia has had no opt-outs ahead of NIT

by:
Griffin McVeigh

QuoteGeorgia did not hear its name called on Selection Sunday, missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the eighth year in a row. However, the year is not completely done as head coach Mike White has accepted a big to play in the NIT. Xavier will come to Athens as Georgia's first-round opponent, scheduled for Tuesday.

With how the college basketball calendar is laid out, it would be easy for current Georgia players to opt out of the NIT. They could look ahead to the future and prepare for the 2024-2025 season whether that's with the Bulldogs or not.

Fortunately, White says nobody has decided to sit out thus far. Georiga can play as many as five more games and to this point, they expect to be at full strength.

"Nobody has told me that to this point," White said on opt-outs. "Things could change, who knows. I would rather not speculate. We were at full strength in practice today."

The NCAA transfer portal opened on Monday just hours after the Selection Committee announced the Field of 68 and then the NIT sent out invitations. Players are free to be on the move despite the postseason getting started just under 48 hours later.

Georgia basketball's offseason is here. What's next for Mike White and the program? Roster moves will be key for an upgrade entering his third season as Bulldogs will try again to end NCAA Tournament drought

https://onlineathens.com/story/sports/college/bulldogs-extra/2024/04/03/georgia-basketball-roster-transfer-portal-mike-white-asa-newell-josh-brooks

QuoteBefore Mike White and the Georgia basketball team left for the SEC Tournament in Nashville last month, the second-year coach asked reporters if they saw the numbers laid out in the team's game notes about metrics that showed improvement from last season.

It came after the Bulldogs stumbled down the stretch of the regular season, losing 10 of their last 12 games and finishing with the same 6-12 record in SEC play as his first season.

Then the Bulldogs made some tangible strides—their first SEC Tournament win since 2020 and winning three NIT games to reach the semifinals before an 84-67 loss to Seton Hall Tuesday night.

"The way we played down the stretch has got me ready for practice in June," White said in Indianapolis on a late night Zoom. "I'm excited to figure out who our roster is going to be, what it's going to look like."

Next season will offer another chance to end the program's NCAA Tournament drought that goes back to 2015. The Bulldogs finished this season 20-17, a four-win improvement on White's first season.

"We were picked near the bottom, we all know that, right, but we had higher expectations and standards within our program," White said recently. "If we finished a few of those, we'd potentially be in the other tournament."

Georgia, unlike some other Power 5 programs, accepted an NIT bid and made the most of it, winning the type of close games they had trouble closing out in the regular season.

"It validates the progress, seeing the success and especially these last few games of three freshmen starting," athletic director Josh Brooks said after Georgia won at Ohio State. "It points to the great job they've done developing to be able to get those young guys to progress the way they have all season."
