What's your favorite .44 mag factory load for handgun hunting whitetail deer?
I've always used the Federal CastCore 300gr but it is now impossible to find and may have been discontinued.

I've got a Ruger .44 Magnum Carbine...it currently resides with the middle son...I've read that the best load for this particular gun, due to the way it is constructed and it being a semi-auto, is a 240 grain, jacketed round, loaded to the hot side.

My sources are unreliable, but their information is fascinating.

If that's what you like, it will certainly work, but that load is designed for hunting heavier game than deer.  It's for deep penetration on bigger game like elk and bear.  Buffalo Bore makes loads similar if that's what's you're looking for.  For deer I would use something more like Federals 240gr XTP loads.

I hunt with a 45 colt and use the 250gr XTP for deer and 325gr hard cast for tougher game.  The XTP is designed for deer.

I've always wanted one of the Rugers with the lever action. I think it would be a great hog gun.

A SAA or a more stout revolver?

Ruger Bisley Blackhawk for now.  I really want to replace it with a FA97.

Sweet grip frame on the Bisley.
I've never shot (or even coon fingered) a FA but everything I've read about them signals the highest quality.

I have a FA97 with separate 32H&R and 327 federal cylinders.  The quality is as good as many custom revolvers at a semi custom price.  The 5 shot 41/44/45 revolvers are very nice carry guns that will handle extremely heavy loads without ever shooting loose.  The model 83 is a good hunting revolver but is big and heavy.  The 97 is much nicer to carry.  I like my Blackhawk, but someday after my daughter is out of school I'll replace it with a 97.
