Cal without its best back against #OleMiss, and Rebs' practice goes smoothly without Matt Luke

QuoteCal will be without its most versatile offensive player for the rest of the season.

Senior running back Tre Watson suffered an unspecified lower-body injury during the first quarter of Cal's 33-20 win over Weber State and left the game for good shortly after a run a quarter later.

Ole Miss has dealt with plenty of off-field adversity. Now it'll have to deal with the on-field version.

QuoteBERKELEY, Calif. — Everyone knew on-field adversity would come at some point.

The question has always been: How would Ole Miss handle it?

Now it's here, and the Rebels will have to find an answer after it fell 27-16 to Cal in front of a crowd of 37,125 at Memorial Stadium Saturday.

Ole Miss has dealt with plenty of off-field drama. It self-imposed a postseason ban in February, lost its head coach Hugh Freeze to a sudden resignation in July, two weeks before training camp, and the NCAA's Committee on Infractions held its hearing for the football program on Monday and Tuesday of this week. So a lot has gone on.

Now it's been saddled with its first loss. The Rebels have a bye week coming up, but the schedule only gets harder with road trips awaiting at Alabama and Auburn following the week off.

Last year, Ole Miss didn't handle adversity well. All offseason, players said this year would be different. Now they have their chance to prove it.

"We've been through a lot together. I think the important part is when this team faces adversity to see what happens," Matt Luke said. "We're not going to do it alone. We're going to do it together. That's what I told them in the locker room after the game."
