Here is my problem with Pelphrey. In his interview at the 2:30 He was asked before the game what it took to beat Kentucky? His response "We just need a little Magic to happen."

I'll be the first to tell you that I love to be lucky and have that magic, but when talking about winning games I want to know that I am gonna beat a team because I know that I am better than them not that I am lucky. Luck or Magic does not make you successful only hopeful. With statements like this, it still makes me question his confidence in his teams ability or his confidence in general. Just my input

Ahhh, I was wondering if someone would jump on this.  I thought it would belong to PMRH.

I just got out of class and finaly had time to watch it. I'm surprised no one else had a problem with this statement too.  ???

KookieHog

I didn't watch it, but I heard he also mentioned something about "We just want to hang around til the last TV timeout".

I figured one of you would be all over this!!!
"We shouldn't have to rely on hanging around" or "What happened to the days when we were in every game regardless".

The Hogfather

I heard he smiled after the game.  Can anyone confirm that?  I love smiling myself, but for him to do this after beating Kentucky is just ridiculous.  Doesn't he know we're going to lose the last 4 games of the season?

regi

When you haven't won your division in 16 years, a little perspective is in order. Tough to be confident, unless you line up some of that fake Houston Nutt confidence.

Yes, accompanied by a fist pump.  Ridiculous and uncalled for.

I'm afraid to keep responding to these posts, as I worry it will make my new Pel-hater friends angry with me. :(

If Pelphrey had said he felt we'd win because we were better than UK, he'd be laughed out of the state and called a liar. Can't blame him for being honest. I'd say we got some lucky breaks, including Rotnei's 3+1 and that 4 FT spot for Rotnei after the T was given to UK. Delvon missed some point blank range layups/jams which counter the luck we had in other areas, but on paper we certainly aren't better than UK.

I used to argue with HA about how Pel ran the basketball team.  I've since learned to like and respect him.  In fact, I'd go as far to say that HA is well connected or extremely perceptive. - Porkatarian, 11/7/12

So if this game was won out of "luck" then what hope does it give us? none. If it wasn't won out of skill or coaching then the win becomes mute.

"Luck" is a nice thing to have every once in a while. But you can't live on it or rely on it. Consistently good recruiting, preparation and productivity is what wins games in any college sport. If you rely on luck, it will get through occasionally. But you can't build a solid program on luck and that is exactly what we were last night with Kentucky with them having beaten us in every measurable statistic except the final score.

Maybe Pel should take a poll to see what he is allowed to say and what he is not allowed to say.

PonderinHog

So do we now refer to Pel as "The Wizard of Walton?"

It's more than that - it shows a total lack of confidence in yourself and in your team.

So you are fine with winning a big game only when "Magic Hits" and the rest of the time be "well I guess it just wasn't our night." Would that be acceptable in the business world?

Pel is a humble person. He is not going to come out and trash talk and give the lines y'all want to hear. He is practicing what he is preaching. He is not getting too high or getting too low. To answer your question. I don't really care what he says short of disparaging the university.

I think it is really sad that people want to laugh at his choice of words given the kind of person he is. Maybe some need to look in the mirror. just an opinion that is.

As long as it's an exit poll, I have no problem with that whatsoever.

It was obviously more than luck. He knows his guys worked hard. Brandon Knight both kept Kentucky in the game and shot them out of it. But we rotated four defenders on him throughout the game (Nobles, Britt, Peterson, Wade) and made him work his tail of for every dribble he took.

Besides, Pel did say it was just a "little magic." These guys earned the win by playing solid D, making clutch shots, and hitting their free throws.

The whole premise of this thread takes his words out of context and is vastly overblown. I'm done now that this topic has gone full-blown retarded.

As I've always said, win and this stuff isn't as big of an issue. We won, so he can say what he wants.

It's when he says "We just didn't have the magic tonight" after losing to Auburn or something that ticks me off. You shouldn't need magic to beat Auburn.

I caught the "hang until the last tv timeout", very Nutt-esque. Just like the game last night. Let's build off the momentum for the first time in Pel's tenure. I know we can do it, let's finally see it.

You should think better of yourself.  Do you have self-esteem problems?
