now steve Lavin of St Johns is fired.  In Chicago DePaul fires their coach.  Is there no big city that has a really good college basketball team anymore??   LA, Houston, Atlanta, Memphis, Detroit, and on and on.  The closest I guess is Washington DC    which has Georgetown who are ok .  This has been an ongoing trend.  You would think the programs could at least get to a point where they could get to the round of 32 every year and occasionally a deep run in the tourney.

Philadelphia with Villanova, and UCLA may be down but overall they're pretty good.

Washington, DC -- Georgetown

Los Angeles -- UCLA

Philadelphia -- Villanova

Dallas -- SMU

You listed Memphis. I'd argue that Memphis has been one of the top 10-15 programs over the past decade or so. Although I don't know that it qualifies as a "big city."

These are the biggest off of the top of my head. The biggest MSA's focus more on pro sports though. Small college towns like Baton Rouge, Fayetteville, Normon, etc are centered around their Universities.

Cincy has good college basketball. No elite team.

Do you guys think SMU will continue on the upswing?/   I am not sure they will when Brown goes and the NCAA comes in.  I am a big fan of Larry Browns and I know Jankovich is his designated coach in waiting and while I am hoping it will just keep building and building I am doubtful.........  UCLA is iffy but USC is starting to recruit some talent also.   To be honest I forgot about Villanova.  I grew up liking the Big 5 In Philly when they were all good.
