Did you guys notice that Joe Montana was not one of the NFL MVPs that ran out on the field before the Super Bowl last night.  Apparently he wanted a guaranteed 100 grand for an appearance fee.  Sorry [CENSORED].  I have to say I have lost alot of respect for him.  I guess it's not all about the game huh.

Because for long-time 49er observers, in their heart of hearts, it's always about Joe vs. Steve. For them, for us, for everyone around them, no matter if it totally obliterates Tom Brady, Bart Starr, Troy Aikman, Jim Plunkett and the rest of the Super Bowl MVPs who were in attendance Sunday.

Joe vs. Steve.  If Joe's there, Steve's not. If Steve's there, Joe's not. It's a LAW!

I'm thinking Joe Montana considered what it'd take for him to show up at any event that also celebrated his former (current?) nemesis and Joe thought: Give me 100 times what that other guy got. Young got $1,000 plus expenses, which is what the other Super Bowl MVPs got.

Joe didn't care about everybody else. I'm thinking: He just didn't want any part of anything that glorified Young.  Since they parted, hell, even when they were on the 49ers together hating each other, have you ever seen Joe and Steve at a ceremony together? On stage together? On TV together? Even speaking of each other?
Or have you see any Joe Guy with Steve or a Steve Guy with Joe? No. No. No. (Other than the one Guy Joe allows near Steve, Jerry Rice, who was there Sunday as an MVP.) And never will, I think.

News flash: This guess is an official wild-hare speculative moment, and I do not want to question Ira Miller's report in the San Francisco Chronicle for one second. Ira was in Detroit. He talked to NFL officials about Montana being only one of three living Super Bowl MVPs who skipped out on the pre-game festivities.

Ira got the scoop and Ira, frankly, is way better than me. That's obvious. So maybe it really did come down to the money. Ira reported Joe wanted $100,000. I've told you why I think that number makes sense. 100 times Steve is why.

Frankly, I was more intrigued by Montana and Terry Bradshaw's twin no-shows (Jake Scott's absence, I didn't really care much about or notice) than I was about that weird Super Bowl.

Once Young was introduced, everybody who knows the two guys had to wonder: Will Joe show up for this?

This is still the great personality rivalry of all time, folks, greater than Shaq vs. Kobe, Bradshaw vs. Guys With Hair, Me vs. Everybody, Chris Berman vs. the English Language, and tied with Ali vs. Frazier

One of his sons had a basketball game. So thats the reason he gave for not being there. But still, its super bowl sunday, im sure his kid has another basketball game sometime. So im going to hope thats the REAL reason why he wasnt there, but you are probably close. But also the 100 grand fee was suppose to be for the whole week, and when he didnt get it, thats when he supposedly went back home.... All in all a sorry situation.

If this is really all true about Montana, I just lost so much respect for him.  He does deny it, so I guess I'll give him the benefit of the doubt about the money thing.  But still, this was the 40th anniversary of the Super Bowl with all other MVP players.  He should have shown up even if they asked him to pay for his own flight.

Worse than Montana is Bradshaw for sure.  The guy was a Super Bowl quarterback for Pittsburgh...I mean Pittsburgh for heaven sakes.  The whole damn place was crawling with Steeler fans.  He's even an announcer who is in tuned to all of this and the significance of the Super Bowl all year long. That to me was just pitiful.

Broken Trigger

I'm not a 49er guy, but for what it's worth, i like Steve Young a lot better than Montana anyway.   BTW, anyone know why Bradshaw wasn't there?

hogtheball

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I've noticed you never see Joe Montana and Barry Manilow in the same place.  I think they might be the same person.  Barry was getting ready for the Grammy's during the superbowl and Joe is nowhere to be found.  Seriously, if it wasn't for the rings, could you tell the difference?

They say Bradshaws reason was money as well, but also they said it was family related.  I think he should have been there.  He was a steeler for crying out loud..  He was probaly busy filming a commercial  or a video with Toby Kieth.

Well, they are retired.  They need to do whatever makes them happy.  There are no curfews/bed checks in retirement.

Montana paid his dues, did his job.  Time for him to do whatever he feels like he needs to do to be happy.  He says he missed his girls growing up while he played and will not do that for his boys when he is retired.  I respect that.

Just becasue Bradshaw played with the steelers does not mean he HAD to be there either in my opinion.  Bradshaw has kissed and made up with Pittsburgh.  He had a big grudge with the fans up there for along time.  If he wanted to stay home with his family, good for him.

Hopefully, it was a family thing.  I just can't seem him ducking out from the publicity.   He really seems to love the spotlight and his Steeler heritage.  I would definitely be disappointed to find out he didn't appear because of money.

hogwildinhouston

First, I think it's a huge stretch about the $$$ thing.  I mean, come on......Montana is freaking filthy rich.  You can't possibly think that money (or lack of in appearance fees) was the reason he didn't go.

He just did an interview on ESPN that said it all.  He said football is behind him.  He has a life now away from the game.  He talked about how football made him miss his daughters growing up, and that he would not make that mistake with his sons.   He said he's able now to be there for them, and he will be.  They had games over the weekend, and he and his wife were there.   Wow, crucify the man for being a great father.  (The article that is, not the posters here)

At the end of the day, it's his life and his choice.  It's really not any of our business why he did or didn't show.

Heard in on the radio here and it was Bradshaw's son that had a basketball game.. They claimed it was $100 grand for Joe Montana.  Sounds really bad from everyone that doesn't know the Joe v. Young situation.

Woo-Pig-Stew-good read, thanks for that insight.

HogtheBall, good comparison with Montana and manilow, but I always thought
Barry Lunney was a Manilow lookalike?

I thought (Almanzo)Dean Butler and Montana were the same guy ;)

kuhog

Montana is 3 times the player as Young. If you need evidence, just look at how many Superbowl rings each one of them have in possession.

hogtheball

If a super bowl ring is the only measure of how good a quarterback is,  then I guess you think Jim McMahon was better than Dan Marino.  Trent Dilfer was better than Payton Manning.  Brad Johnson was just as good as Favre.    It's just not that easy.

I would guess that Bradshaw might've been encouraged by his bosses at Fox to not make an appearance at an event aired by the competition.

Anything that makes the pregame hoopla shorter is a good thing.  That's just 2 less intro's I had to put up with.  Hat's off to both of them.

Now if we could have just gotten rid of Mick at the half....

Jake Scott is obviously still moping over letting Chuck Dicus get behind him for this TD in the 1969 Sugar Bowl. So he went to Australia trying to get it out of his mind.

Joe's upset that Young has been dubbed the "Burger King" by the NFL.

BRADSHAW

Bradshaw was on Leno, he stated that he does 21 weeks straight of Sundays with football and the second football is over he goes to his ranch in OK and every Sunday he drives to Dallas to take his daughter to church and then to lunch (he is divorced and those of you in the same situation can understand that I bet), and if Fox is not doing the Super Bowl he does not go. He stated he does not like the SUper Bowl because of the crowds and he gets anxiety (perhaps related to his depression issues). When he was contact he called the Steelers owner and told him he was not coming and wanted to make sure it was okay with him and that they were fine with it and that he needed to do what was best for him.

PolishPigPower

Well, the game was on ABC, and Bradshaw works for FOX.  And these two were just part of heated negotiations over TV contracts for the NFL.  I can't help but think that someone either leaned on Bradshaw a little bit over this one, or he just decided he didn't want to deal with what it could turn into.

Besides, if this game would have been televised on FOX, I can *guarantee* you that Bradshaw would have been there!
