AN FRANCISCO, Calif. _  Jordan Howard, the career three-pointer leader at the University of Central Arkansas, misfired at the buzzer Monday night as the Bears dropped a 78-76 decision to the San Francisco Dons at War Memorial Gym at the Sobrato Center.

The Bears (4-5) led by as much as 12 points in the first half but saw the Dons (4-3) fight back and lead for the majority of the second half. Howard hit his fourth three-pointer of the game and Darraja Parnell added a pair of free throws as UCA tied the game at 67-67 with five minutes to play.

UCA stayed within striking distance the rest of the way, and a jumper by Howard followed by two free throws made it a three-point game at 77-74 with 1:06 remaining. USF's Chase Foster made 1 of 2 at the line to give the Dons a 78-76 lead with 13.6 seconds left. UCA lost the ball out of bounds with 3.4 seconds left but it went off a USF player.

Howard took a pass in the left corner and after a pump fake, launched a three-pointer that bounced off the rim. Howard, the top scorer in the Southland Conference, made 5 of 9 from three-point range and finished with 27 points to lead all scorers.

The Bears ran out to a 25-13 advantage in the first 10 minutes of the game behind the perimeter shooting of junior guard Thatch Unruh. The Bears held the Dons without a field goal for more than eight minutes and USF had an 0-for-15 stretch from the field. But a 12-2 scoring run got the Dons back into the game, and a three-pointer from Frankie Ferrari with 5:00 left gave them their first lead at 25-24.

Numerous trips to the foul line the rest of the half allowed USF to finish the half on a 24-8 run and grab a 37-33 halftime advantage. The Dons were 12 of 18 at the free-throw line in the first half, compared to 2 of 2 for the Bears. UCA shot  48.1 percent from the field in the half while USF made just 33.3 percent. Unruh was perfect in the opening 20 minutes, going 4 for 4 from the field, including 3 of 3 from three-point range, for a team-high 11 points.

Senior Mathieu Kamba followed Howard with 16 points, hitting 6 of 8 from the field, while Unruh finished with 11 points, hitting 3 of 4 from three-point range. UCA was 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from three-point range, while USF made 11 of  31 (35.5) from beyond the arc and improved to 38.1 percent for the game. The Dons outrebounded the Bears 43-30.

Jordan Ratinho led the Dons with four three-pointers and 17 points, while Ferrari added 15 points, including 3 of 5 from three-point range.

UCA continues its west coast swing on Wednesday night, taking on the California Bears at 9 p.m. (CT) at Haas Pavilion.
