Does it matter that his 58 was on a par 70 course?  Most of the tour courses are 72.  While I'm not trying to take anything away from his accomplishment, is a 58 on a 70 the same as a 58 on a 72?

You can make the argument that it is, because a par 72 course almost always has four par 5 holes, which most PGA pros consider birdie holes and possibly eagle holes.  Par 70 courses normally have only two par 5 holes; thus two fewer holes that are considered birdie holes.

You can also argue that it's not as impressive because it takes 14 under par on a par 72 course and only 12 under on a par 70 course.

The Hartford course isn't one of the hardest on tour, but it's not one of the easiest either.   So under anybody's interpretation, what Furyk did was darned impressive.

I'm sure it's nothing that a $500 retainer can't fix.  Contact JackRabbit Hog for payment instructions.

I watched the hole by hole recap, and that couldve been a 56.

So, if it had been a par 72 with two more par 5's, and he'd have birdied both of those, he would have shot 56 - now that would have been something (although a 58 is pretty special also)

No, I think it would have still been a 58.

A 58 is remarkable. Phenomenal. There's only one.

Bull, I've done it several times - on a nine hole course.   :-[

I think you're right -

there are 18 holes - if two of them are par 5's instead of par 4's, then, assuming he birdies both he still shoots 58 because he's made the same score on them as he did when they were par 4's (on the par 70 course) - OTOH - if he pars either one, his gross score increases, if he pars one of them he shoots 59, if both, 60 - I think I'm right about that...........

Been lots of rounds played on par 70 courses in PGA tour events and this is the first time it's ever been done. So it's pretty dang impressive either way in my book.

Don't forget, Kim Jong Il once shot 34, which was -38 at the course he was playing.  Witnessed and verified by a bunch of his bodyguards.

Yeah, but did he lay cable at the turn, and, if so, what was the ruling?

Cable is a movable obstruction.  Free drop.

Reminds me of a Willie Nelson story. Apparently Willie has played some golf, and owned a golf course near Austin, TX.
One day someone asked Willie what the par was at his course.
Willie: "Anything I want it to be. Take this hole right here. It's a par-47...and yesterday I birdied the sucker."
