Hope some will now go and get the book Foul the story of New York basketball and Connie Hawkins. Maybe the best or at least top 3 basketball books I have read.  He never actually took money but was coerced into saying he did in the Jack Molinas scandal.  If not for that Iowa had him and Don Nelson upfront for the next year.  When he signed his college scholarship papers he could barely write.  Lots of stories about the ABL and ABA and how he getting blackballed from the NBA took away his best years from playing against the best.  If we could have seen him at say 22 to 26 he would be rated much higher IMHO.

Sad story all the way.
