Quote from: bphi11ips on Today at 03:38:50 pmYour opinion is that the question is silly.  I disagree and so do others.

The point as it relates here to Gafford is that he demonstrated his intensity in college and has continued to develop in the NBA.  Everyone is the NBA and NFL have the physical tools to make it to that level.  Once they get there, the difference is sometimes the six inches between the ears.  Gafford is a good example.  Does Brazile have the burning desire to make it over the long haul or not?  So far that may be the biggest question in the minds if those whose jobs depend on picking the best future players.

What? I remember at the time people discussing Gafford's inconsistent motor

Quote from: ucahogfan on Today at 04:32:01 pmThe biggest difference is that I would think Thompson and DVH didn't expect black holes in the lineup this year where Bolton didn't hit a ton at Austin Peay before he transferred in.  I write it off to just one of those fluke years where all of the weird happens offensively.  Thompson has a long enough track record here.  The offense last year was dragged down by two guys who were in there simply for defense.  I think we get that corrected next year.

I hope you're right, but I thought it was getting corrected this year. Even before the season started, you could tell this offense was probably going to be a step down compared to previous years, especially in the power department. That has come to fruition and then some, and makes me think it doesn't quite rise to the level of fluky, but more just underachieving.

Cal had 10 starter level players on scholarship then two late pickups in Burks and Hart. Burks played little. Hart played mop up 9nky.

Quote from: HogBroker on Yesterday at 05:04:02 pmPeople keep talking about a batting philosophy of running up the pitch count. But how often are pitchers taken out due to pitch count? Isn't it more often when they get in some trouble? Like 2-3 runs in an inning, a string of hits, loss of control, etc. What's the real point of running up the pitch count?

It also seems like we are hitting from behind the count very often. Then getting us out on pitchers' pitches - strike outs, fly outs, grounders (man we pound balls into the dirt often too). Meanwhile, earlier in the count we watch hitters pitches go by.

Then again, what it seems like and what the reality is are two different things. Would love to see some data to really study this theory.

The point is to cause mental and physical fatigue. Most pitchers begin to lose velocity and some level of control as the pitch count increases.

@MattNorlander
Portal update: Riley Kugel won't play at Kansas, per sources. Bill Self told @TheAndyKatz Monday Kugel's future w/ KU was "up in the air." Kugel (9.2 ppg @ Florida) is on CBS Sports' list of notable 2024 transfers. He's being recruited again by high-majors.

Quote from: Letterman26 on Today at 04:02:16 pmThese takes are so abhorrent and clueless. With 11.7 scholarships, these coaches know where they have invested their "money".  When you have an ACE like H. Smith, you surround him with other pitching talent...therefore, you spend less of your scholarship money on hitting.  It's just the way it is.  Van Horn isn't going to look at Thompson and say, "you haven't done your job"...because he knows, he hasn't spent the scholarship money on hitters.  It's the tricky situation for college baseball.  You only have so many scholarship $$ to spend, so you either dive all into pitching or hitting.  It's not to say, you don't try to hit on both, but it is what it is.  This Razorback team is heavily invested in pitching (that's why our bullpen is sooo deep).
Just tired of seeing these "johny come lately" fans, say, "well, Thompson's gotta go"...blah blah blah".  You're clueless and it's showing.

We had the top offense in the SEC in 2018 and were an out away from winning it all. I have a hard time believing that DVH saw that and decided to move a bunch of scholarship money towards pitching and defense. This is the first year we've been elite on the mound, too. We have been a more balanced team the last few years.

On3 2024 College Basketball Team Transfer Portal Rankings

On3's Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team's production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window.
