according to the list in today's paper.  How does that happen? Is there not scholarship limits at that level? How many actually get to campus?

They're allowed 36 a year by Div 2 standards.

While they signed 61, that doesn't mean they're all on full scholarships or partial scholarships.

They signed zero players in the 2012 and 2013 class.  Saved 'em all for this crop.

Schools like Henderson can split more than half of their scholarship allotment among multiple players. Sporty Carpenter offered me a partial schollie but I went military instead. Wish I could have rethought that one, or UCA asking me to walk-on after I got out.

He signed this kid four years ago about that size named Stefon Ceasar, who you can go look up on youtube who ended up being a freak. You don't get an offer if you're not good from Maxfield.

I won't even bring up Ryan McDonald from Charleston... Ok yeah I will.

Maxfield hands out a whole bunch of partial scholarships and casts out a wide net. He hands out more to high level guys (think John Michael McGee, former 4-star) and bumps scholarships up to the better players down the road.

He's had multiple kids invited and signed to NFL camps and an active NFL guy named Sean McGrath who is now the backup TE for the Chiefs and he has the winningest program in the state since 2010. He's improving upon a monster.

Yea, Henderson has been great for the past few couple of years! BUt I see this as rebuilding, not reloading. And it seems like they won't be any good until these players develop. 60 players? That's over 2 signing classes put together!

Jek Tono Porkins

That's pretty interesting. Seems like the first couple of years I was there, they signed a ton of JUCO players out of California. I remember at some event they announced all of the football seniors and it seemed like every one of them was from California. Now it looks like they're just recruiting out of the surrounding states. Oh well, as long as Maxfield keeps winning I guess it's whatever.

They can split up those scholarships so it's no big deal.  A lot of guys sign for very little (~200) and honestly, at that level, you generally need 2-3 years to develop guys before you can tell who'll be your best players.

Nah. They're pulling a "Nick Saban" by picking off kids who might otherwise go to a school they might play at some point over the next year or two. You know: keep as much talent out of the hands of future opponents as you can. Who cares how many kids you have to "throw back" eventually.

Uncommon

Funny because that's how many scholarship players we will have in Spring ball this year.

will be interesting in the delph now, i saw that OBU got Frazier transfer from Auburn, and they signed a few kids from Arkadelphia's best HS team in 2 decades.

20 years ago.  Played for Ken Turner.  Was there when we went from NAIA to D2.

We played AT North Alabama that first year in the gulf south.  They were the defending national champs.  We had two different QBs that got lots of reps and were down by less than a touchdown and driving with under a minute to play.  One QB was a passer and one.....was not.  Don't remember exactly why....but our non thrower was in for our last play.  Ball was around mid-fieldish and it was either 4th down or there were just a couple seconds in the game....don't remember which...maybe both.  Anyway, we ran an I formation and some goal line wishbone.  But we had some 4&5 wide sets for such an occasion.  In those sets, I lined up as kind of a slot.  Last play, I run basically a 10 yd stutter into a post.   Safeties split and I am wide.  Nobody within 15 yards.  Our QB sees me (defensive screw up....not some great move by me btw) and he lets it go.  I came to a complete stop and it still hit the ground 5 yds short of my feet.

Could have been beautiful lol.

Anyway.....if there is a hell on earth, it's that stale air practice field.

They were really, really talent deficient then. He knew what he had with those juco kids and it was a really smart strategy. I think it was the 2010 or 2011 class where he backed off on all the juco kids.

They're returning their all-american QB, and best receiver, best tailback, two starting linebackers and rotated all their DB's last year. Offensive line is a question mark but they have three or four potential big-time offensive lineman on campus at the moment.

They're gonna be just fine.

To win the SEC, you need to recruit FL and GA better.  Name the last team who won the SEC that has had substantial Texas recruiting?  It's BEEN A WHILE.

To win the SEC, you need to recruit FL and GA better.  Name the last team who won the SEC that has had substantial Texas recruiting?  It's BEEN A WHILE.

We need more high-end players from out of state.  Where is irrelevant.  The teams that have been winning the SEC on Georgia and Florida talent are doing so mostly because they're close to, or in, Georgia and Florida.  The only other SEC team that recruits Texas much at all (until aTm joined) has been LSU.  This is one of those times where a correlation is not due to a causative relationship.

Few people knew but Henderson State brought in HDN as a recruiting consultant in late January.*
