AD could threaten to gut his authority, re-organize his staff, hire in assistants to run the show and basically de-ball him. The result would likely be a negoiated buy-out much more palatable to the UA. Open war between the HC and the AD would likely ruin 2018 and result in another rebuild but if you think he will not turn it around until his buyout is reasonable, you are talking about 3 years of mediocrity and declining enthusiasm.

Alternately, they could flood the football operations center with busty blondes instructed to bring him a craft beer every half hour until the situation sorts itself out...
