For a football program without much a successful history, Rhoads appeared to have the Cyclones on the right track toward turning that around.  Replacing Gene Chizik and his 5-19 record after he left for Auburn, Rhoads led ISU to 24 wins and three bowl berths in the four seasons from 2009-13. Illinois has fired head coach Tim Beckman one week before the start of the season.

UI Director of Athletics Mike Thomas confirmed the dismissal on Friday, citing preliminary results of an external review into allegations of player mistreatment.

Illinois opens the season against Kent State on Sept. 4. The school announced offensive coordinator Bill Cubit will serve as interim head coach.

Beckman's teams compiled a dismal 4-20 Big Ten record over three years, but he had his best season (6-7) last year, including a bid to the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood was being investigated for alleged impermissible contact with a university faculty member. The latest twist in this story suggests Flood may have done so despite being advised not to do so by academic support staff members.

Flood was instructed by academic support staff not to make contact with a professor to inquire about the academic standing of one of his players, reported to be cornerback Nadir Barnwell. The university is investigating an email allegedly from Flood from a private account. But the scope of the investigation is focused more on the possibility Flood tried to work around the process regarding academics and football...

The 2016 season may see a big house cleaning in the SEC - likely changes at AR, AU, TN, SC, Vandy.   Other vacancies due to coaches moving up or retiring at GA, MSU, OM, others?

The 2017 SEC coaches meeting may be full of new faces.

Jackson was 6-11 in a season and a half as the Tigers' coach. The move comes less than a week after JSU athletic director Robert Walker stepped down.

A Hattiesburg native and former JSU wide, Jackson played in the NFL from 1968 to 1983. He served as an NFL assistant coach for teams, such as the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. He landed his first head coaching job at Benedict College for one season, and followed up as a wide receivers coach at Kentucky (2001 to 2002) and Baylor (2003 to 2006).

Jackson was paid a base salary of $260.000 per year. His contract, which was set to expire in January 2017, came with a buyout clause of $65,000, or, according to the contract, "a figure negotiated and agreed upon by both parties if terminated earlier by the University (sic)."

In January of 2014, Jackson, 68, replaced Rick Comegy, who had been fired the previous December...

For the third time since 2010, USC is faced with trying to hire a new football coach. The school botched the last two searches when it opted for Pete Carroll disciples Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian, who was fired Monday after being placed on leave by AD Pat Haden...

The first big question here is will Haden, under fire from some in the USC family, be the person pulling the trigger on the next hire?

USC is a curious place with great resources and as proud of its tradition as any football program in the country. So much so that it bends over backwards to lean to coaches who have been part of the Trojan family in the past. That's why you heard the name Jack Del Rio, the former star USC linebacker, and even Jeff Fisher, the former Trojan DB. Or why the school ended up with Kiffin and Sarkisian, former Trojan assistants.

The last time out Haden kicked the tires on Chris Petersen, but the low-key Boise State coach didn't seem like a great fit for the forward-facing Trojans. Instead, Petersen essentially fell in Washington's lap thanks to USC.

USC reached out to Kevin Sumlin last time, but the Texas A&M coach passed, opting to stay with the Aggies...

Briles reportedly told players he believes the rest of the staff will remain for now. Yahoo Sports reported defensive coordinator Phil Bennett is expected to be named interim head coach, but the Waco Tribune-Herald reports that hasn't been determined yet.

When Jim Tressel was let go on Memorial Day, defensive coordinator Luke Fickell took over for the year. When Bobby Petrino was let go, John L. Smith returned to take over as the interim. If Baylor goes through 2016 with an internal interim coach, what would Baylor look for in a replacement next winter? Philip Montgomery and Dino Babers are names brought up as former Baylor assistants, but would the school really go to someone on the Briles tree?

NCAA has reached out, and it's unknown if the Pepper Hamilton full investigation report will be public. Add in in the unpredictability of the season, and it's too early to speculate on candidates. Who saw Bill O'Brien taking over Penn State or Bret Bielema going to Arkansas?
