Quote"Yeah, he's going back to school," Horatio Webster said by phone. "He's going to pull his name out [Wednesday]. As far I know he's going back to Mississippi State. He still has a scholarshp at Mississippi State. I hope they didn't give it away."

UK: Briscoe Plans to Return to Kentucky for 2016-17 Season

QuoteKentucky men's basketball freshman guard Isaiah Briscoe plans to return to UK for the 2016-17 season after going through the process of declaring for the NBA Draft. Utilizing new NCAA rules that allow players to "test the waters," Briscoe entered the NBA Draft without hiring an agent to protect his NCAA eligibility with the option of returning to school.

On Wednesday, Briscoe informed UK of his intention to come back to school. He will join Derek Willis, Dominique Hawkins, Isaac Humphries, Mychal Mulder and Tai Wynyard as 2016-17 scholarship returners.

"I really grew from this experience and I appreciate the opportunity to be evaluated by these NBA teams," Briscoe said. "I also want to thank the coaching staff and the fans for their support during this time. The NBA is my ultimate goal, so I'm returning to build on last year. There's no better place to grow as a player or to win a championship, and I want to do both."

Briscoe will return as the leading scorer and rebounder to form a nucleus alongside the nation's top-ranked recruiting class (according to Rivals and ESPN), which features Edrice "Bam" Adebayo, De'Aaron Fox, Wenyen Gabriel, Sacha Killeya-Jones and Malik Monk. With Briscoe coming back to school, UK will return 24.2 percent of its scoring and 30.0 percent of its rebounding from last season.

"After finishing up academically, Isaiah Briscoe used the new rules to the fullest by working out for eight different teams to get a true barometer on where he stands at this point in his career," head coach John Calipari said. "I can tell you all the teams were impressed with him physically, defensively, his rebounding ability, his strength, his ball-handling ability and his basketball IQ. He shot the ball well at the NBA workouts but will look to continue to improve that to take the next step in his career. With that said, he's pulling his name out of the draft and returning to Kentucky as the leading scorer and rebounder. Without his impact and competitive spirit, last year's team would not have been nearly as successful. I fully expect him to come back and be a leader on and off the court for this young team. I'm excited to have him back."

Briscoe transformed into an elite defender during his freshman season and one of the best-rebounding guards in the country.

Briscoe ranked ninth in the SEC in minutes per game at 32.2 and was also among the league leaders with a 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Skal may go as high as #7 in the Draft now http://kentuckysportsradio.com/basketball-2/chad-ford-thinks-labissieres-draft-ceiling-is-no-7-to-denver ...

QuoteNBA draft guru Chad Ford fielded questions about the upcoming draft

— When asked about Skal Labissiere's ceiling, Ford said he could go as high as No. 7 to the Nuggets, or as low as No. 16 to the Celtics. He named the Bucks (1oth) and Magic (11th) as teams that could target Labissiere if he is still on the board.

— Ulis is on the lottery bubble, in the 14-22 range, according to Ford. He's had Ulis in that range since Ulis first threw his name in the mix when he announced he wouldn't be returning to Kentucky. Some other experts agree, although there are some mock drafts that have Ulis falling much further.

— He considers Murray the second best pure point guard in the draft behind Dunn. Nothing new here, but he thinks the Wolves could take him as a shooter or the Pels could take him as a PG, if he's available.

Ford also updated the ESPN Top 100 today. He has Jamal Murray at No. 3, Skal Labissiere at No. 11, and Tyler Ulis at No. 18 in his prospect rankings.

Conspicuous by its absence at the NBA Combine was the SEC.

QuoteEight SEC players, including four from UK, were there. But where was Alabama's Retin Obasohan? Or league-leading scorer Stefan Moody of Ole Miss? Or Arkansas' Moses Kingsley, perhaps the SEC's most improved player last season?

Yet Skal Labissiere, who struggled to find his footing as a freshman, was there.

Former LSU teammate: Ben Simmons did not quit on team

QuoteTim Quarterman wants to dismiss that notion. Following a workout with the Philadelphia 76ers, Quarterman addressed directly the issues about Simmons and his effort and commitment while in Baton Rouge.

"Ben is a great person and a great player and he is a great competitor," Quarterman told reporters. "I don't think throughout the season he ever quit on us. I think he continued to play hard. I think us losing frustrated a lot of us as competitors, because we always wanted to win. As for him being a competitor ... he's a great competitor and a great player and never gave up on us."

Simmons, of course, is projected to be the top overall pick in this year's draft —

QuoteESPN analyst Chad Ford shot Poythress up to No. 50 in his ranking of the top pro prospects.

Ford agreed to share with The Courier-Journal his best- and worst-case scenarios:

JAMAL MURRAY, G, 6-5
► Best Case: No. 3 overall, Boston Celtics.
► Worst Case: No. 8 overall, Sacramento Kings.

SKAL LABISSIERE, F, 7-0
► Best Case: No. 7 overall, Denver Nuggets
► Worst Case: No. 15 overall, Denver Nuggets.

TYLER ULIS, G, 5-10
► Best Case: No. 14 overall, Chicago Bulls
► Worst Case: No. 25 overall, Los Angeles Clippers

ALEX POYTHRESS, F, 6-8
► Best Case: Early second round
► Worst Case: Undrafted. "Teams hope that maybe over time he'll transition into a 'three-and-D' guy who can defend and at least hit corner threes and spot-up threes. That part of his game is coming along; it's not where it needs to be, but there's enough hope there that maybe he could be that sort of player."

Latest ESPN Mock Draft has Jamal Murray joining Karl Towns http://bit.ly/1Privu7

QuoteJamal Murray will team up with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins on the NBA's best young team, at least according to Chad Ford's latest projections.

Ford released his Mock Draft 8.0 today and he has Murray going to the Minnesota Timberwolves at fifth overall in the draft:

Murray could go as high as No. 3. He's seriously in the mix with the Celtics. If he slides past them, the Wolves will have to take a long look.

Ford projects Skal Labissiere to the Orlando Magic at No. 11. Tyler Ulis falls all the way to Philadelphia at No. 24, although Philly is currently in talks with Atlanta to land another point guard, Jeff Teague, in exchange for Nerlens Noel.

According to the Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach, Murray's 79 made shots were the most put up by a draft prospect during any workout this year. Murray eclipsed former Kentucky forward Kyle Wiltjer by two shots.

Ben Simmons is an easy choice for the top pick in the 2016 NBA Draft

QuoteThe element of debate is one to be expected when you're talking about putting the future of an NBA franchise in the hands of one player, but when you really break things down, there's no way that Duke's Brandon Ingram should be selected ahead of Simmons in next week's NBA Draft.

NBA has evolved into a shot making league over the past few years and Ingram's ability to stretch the defense is undeniable. 6-foot-9 forward is a prototypical stretch four-man, although his slender frame (190 pounds) may make it difficult for him to initially guard NBA power forwards.

In simple terms, Ingram is terrific.

But he's not the type of transcendent talent that Simmons is.

No player in college basketball was as scrutinized as the 6-11 import from Australia was last season and the criticism was ludicrous at times considering the ancillary pieces that he played with at LSU.

I pointed out last summer that even with Simmons in tow, the Tigers were being vastly overrated entering last season because they were going to have to deal with the losses of two players -- Jarell Martin and Jordan Mickey --

https://www.seccountry.com/kentucky/report-tyler-ulis-has-significant-hip-issue

QuoteFormer Kentucky point guard Tyler Ulis is projected to be a late first round draft pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. An injury though could derail his dreams and cause his stock to tumble.

"Kentucky guard Tyler Ulis is said to have a pretty significant hip issue, which some believe may require surgery down the line," Kyler writes. "A medical red flag combined with his size, Ulis could slide deep into the first round or even over into the second depending on how team medical staffs view his situation."

QuoteBen Simmons is the runaway favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and ESPN's Chad Ford says there's no chance the team passes on the opportunity to take the former LSU standout.

"When you get the chance to draft a 6-foot-10, 240-pound point guard with elite court vision and who's an elite athlete, you just don't pass that up," Ford said on a conference call on Friday.

After Simmons, three Kentucky players are battling to find a spot in the first round, led by Jamal Murray, whom Ford considers to be a sure-fire, top-10 pick.

"Murray will go three to seven," Ford said.

"It's going to come down more to team need than necessarily ranking talent. Murray has the ability to be the best perimeter scorer in this draft. I think he's going to be a 20-point-per-game scorer in the NBA and one of the best shooters in this draft. Defensively, there are concerns there.

"I put (Labissiere)'s range right now at about 7 to 13," Ford said. "The Orlando Magic at 11 look like the most likely spot for him to land. His ability to shoot the ball, to stretch the floor, to protect the rim are elite, but the question is can he play basketball? Does he have a feel for the game?

"The feedback I've gotten from teams is they're aware that there's an issue [with Tyler Ulis] and there's varying degrees, depending on doctors, on how concerned teams are," Ford said. "I don't think it's going to torpedo his draft stock.

"Teams are all over the board on him just because of his size. There's not a lot of precedent for guys that size excelling in the NBA. He has elite court vision. He is probably the best passing point guard in this draft and I think that intrigues some people."

Helping Ulis is the fact that there are few point guards with first round prospects, according to Ford. One of the only others is Vanderbilt's Wade Baldwin, although he is considered a polarizing player among NBA teams.

"There's real questions about his feel as a point guard, getting other players involved, making players better," Ford said of Baldwin.

Skal Labissiere worked out for the Lakers last week, the Los Angeles Times reported

QuoteTimes said that Labissiere was listed as 6-10, 216 pounds. "So his weight might be an issue," the newspaper said. "Most scouts see Labissiere as a player who can run the floor and play multiple positions, which is expected to make him a lottery pick."

"I think I'll be a 'four' (power forward) because of my versatility, both on offense and defense," he told the Times. "I can shoot the basketball, score inside, run the floor really well, block shots, guard small defenders."

QuoteTwo months after he committed to play basketball at the University of Kentucky, Alex Poythress' mother was diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure. Less than a year after he arrived as a McDonald's All-American to play for a supposed championship contender, Poythress was part of the worst loss in the John Calipari era: a first-round NIT exit at Robert Morris.

Eight games into his junior season, for which he returned to erase the bitter taste of an NCAA title-game loss as a sophomore, Poythress tore his left ACL and was forced to watch as the 38-0 Wildcats fell in the Final Four.

So in April, after finishing his UK career with 966 points and 597 rebounds, Poythress moved to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to rehab both his knee and NBA draft dream. He admits now that the knee was not fully healthy last season.

He injured it in December of 2014 and was back in the Wildcats' starting lineup less than a year later. Then he suffered a minor injury in the other knee that cost him five games in the middle of the season.

He claims to have added 5-6 inches back to his vertical jump – putting it close to 40 inches now – and gotten his 3-point shot closer to the 42.4 percent mark he hit as a freshman at Kentucky.

"I feel great, 100 percent. Both knees feel fine," Poythress said. "I got the strength back, so now everything is good."

He started with a workout in California alongside fellow Creative Artists Agency [Jimmy Sexton] clients in front of representatives of all 30 NBA teams, where he impressed with his athleticism and defense.

QuoteSeth Davis, of Campus Rush, compiled thoughts on draft prospects from five anonymous NBA scouts into one summary of thoughts on the talents and projections for each player in the NBA.

LSU's Ben Simmons has already reportedly been informed that the Philadelphia 76ers will select him with the No. 1 overall pick, but here is what Davis found out about seven of the top SEC prospects:

Wade Baldwin, 6'4″ sophomore guard, Vanderbilt: "[Sighs.] He'll get picked because of his size and his length, but he just doesn't have that sense of vision to be a floor general. His numbers show he's a good shooter but he takes a little too much time to get his jumper off. One of the longest guards we've see in a while. The question is, can he lead? What he did at Vanderbilt suggests he can't...

Damian Jones, 7-foot junior center, Vanderbilt: "Athletic. Runs like a deer. My question would be, how hungry is he? He was inconsistent. When you saw him play against Florida [on Jan. 26] he was a monster, scoring 20 points and getting 12 rebounds, but there were other games you're like, where is he? Great kid, really smart, humble. Can run and jump with anyone, but he plays rigid. He didn't improve as much as I thought he would...

Skal Labissiere, 7-foot freshman forward, Kentucky: "I'm not a fan..."

Jamal Murray, 6'5″ freshman guard, Kentucky: "Textbook jumper. The question is whether he can play point guard, which he didn't do at Kentucky. He's a big-time scorer, and he has stepped up at every level, including against grown men in the Pan-Am Games. He's not an unbelievable athlete, and he's not a very good defender right now. He's unbelievably confident, borderline arrogant, which is good..."

Alex Poythress, 6'8″ senior forward, Kentucky: "I don't see it. The NBA will eat that kid up..."

Ben Simmons, 6'10" freshman forward, LSU: "I would take him first. He's a transcendent player because of his size and his ability to play multiple positions. Shooting is a concern..."

QuoteJames Ulis is usually the calm one in the family, the rock everyone else turns to for his poise in times of stress. But now his son, former Kentucky star Tyler Ulis, is just a couple of days from realizing his NBA Draft dream, and Dad is a ball of nerves.

"My wife told me, 'You're looking different,'" James said. "Well, this is different, because I know how hard he's worked to get where he is, and he's controlled what he can control, and now we have to wait. It's not stressful, but it's anticipation. I just want to know where he's going."

That's a bigger mystery than ever after Basketball Insiders reported last week that the buzz in NBA circles is Ulis has "a pretty significant hip issue, which some believe may require surgery down the line." That, combined with his height (5-foot-9), could cause Ulis to "slide deep into the first round or even over into the second," the report read.

Despite his size, Ulis broke John Wall's UK single-season assist record, won SEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard and became the shortest consensus first-team All-American since 1953.
