Rupp Arena is in the early stages of transition.

The on-campus arena issue may have been the last straw when Rick Pitino left in 1997 for the Celtics job.

I don't understand why that would have been for Pitino at KY. Ironic since their bitter rival Louisville, where he is at now, plays in the Yum Arena in downtown Louisville and not on campus. It is downtown Louisville similar to how Rupp is in Lexington. It also doesn't appear to have affected Cal's tenure there at KY.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

SO the previous Groundskeeper had no problems apparently and the current one does. It is incredible though that they have a world renowned expert on those things there and don't think to call him or solicit his advice. It doesn't take a scientific rocket to figure out where the problem is. Aerated the turf in August? I'm no expert but even I wouldn't have done that.

Ole Miss' athletic department has received a $25 million donation, its largest ever: http://on.thec-l.com/1j6b1gC

QuoteOXFORD - Ole Miss alumnus Gerald "Doc" Hollingsworth has given the equivalent of $25 million to the school's athletic department, the largest donation it's ever received.

The contribution will be split with $10 million going to the Forward Together campaign, which will be used to support the north end zone expansion at the football stadium. The remainder will go into a trust that will establish an athletic scholarship fund named after Hollingsworth.

South Carolina unveils new indoor practice facility http://trib.al/CGuN9iS

Quote"This is a very special facility we have," South Carolina Athletic Director Ray Tanner said, crediting the Wheat Family for helping to make it a reality.

"We're really excited for what this facility does for our football program. It's a wonderful facility. People from around the country call it one of the more impressive facilities. As an athletic program, we continue to put our athletes in a position to be successful. We've continued to add locker rooms, improvements, fields and now an indoor facility for our football program, and it's very special."

Ole Miss to demolish power plant where Faulkner wrote 'As I Lay Dying' http://ow.ly/VaDF4

QuoteLate one night at the University of Mississippi power plant, William Faulkner turned over a wheelbarrow, used it as a makeshift table and began writing the classic novel "As I Lay Dying" —

Faulkner, newly married with two stepchildren, needed money when he took the job as the plant's overnight supervisor in late 1929, working 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The coal-fired plant supplied electricity to the university and town of Oxford, both much smaller then. After people went to bed, there wasn't demand for power until dawn.

So Faulkner would roll up a sheaf of papers in a rubber band when he left his family's rented quarters, unroll them in the middle of the night and write.

"I had invented a table out of a wheelbarrow in the coal bunker, just beyond a wall from where a dynamo ran," Faulkner later said. "It made a deep, constant humming noise. There was no more work to do until about 4 a.m., when we would have to clean the fires and get up steam again."

"We determined in looking at the structure that it had been altered so heavily that it had lost integrity," said Jim Woodrick, director of the Historic Preservation Division at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. "The building has just been really badly handled through the years."

Tennessee atheletic director Dave Hart said some have "field fetish" http://trib.al/5WStCQe

QuoteTennessee athletic director Dave Hart said his administration would not consider artificial turf following another season in which the field was an issue throughout the latter part of the season.

"We're not alone in that battle of taking care of practice and game fields," Hart said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The Shields-Watkins field became an issue during the South Carolina and North Texas games to the point where it was reported by network broadcasts and ridiculed on social media. The field seemed to be mostly sand with little grass that would sometimes come up in chunks. The field has been the subject of much scrutiny by the media.

"I know there are some people with field fetish in the room," Hart said, referring to the assembled reporters.

Georgia unveils new indoor facility timeline http://trib.al/tnjTjKS

QuoteThe facility, budgeted at $30.2 million, will be built on the football team's current outdoor grass fields, adjacent to the Butts-Mehre building. As a result whoever is the new coach will lead his team's practices one mile away at the site of what had been club team fields. The team will bus to and from the fields during spring and fall practices.

The aim now is for the facility to be ready at the start of the 2017 calendar year.

Ole Miss has received $5 million in donations for its FedEx Student-Athlete Success Center: http://on.thec-l.com/1lJCl5Z

QuoteFedEx Corporation and an anonymous donor have contributed $2.5 million apiece to support enhancements to the FedEx Student-Athlete Success Center.

"We are extremely grateful for these major gifts, which will enable us to construct additional one-on-one tutoring rooms, small-group and large-group tutoring rooms and counselor and student lounges within the FedEx Center," athletic director Ross Bjork said in a news release.

"Our student-athletes are expected to put in the hours and hours of practice it takes to be successful on their respective teams while also keeping their grades high, so they can be successful in life after collegiate sports. The center gives them a home base where they can study and receive any academic and life skills support they may need."

The FedEx Student-Athlete Success Center is a 24,500-square-foot building that houses an academic counselor, learning specialist and life skills offices, a large conference room, 12 large- and small-group tutoring rooms, two large Mac and Dell computer labs and a micro study lab area, a math and writing lab, and a 150-seat multimedia classroom called the FedEx Auditorium.

Improvements could be in store for Bryant-Denny Stadium: http://ow.ly/VGNQU

Quote"What do we need to do to keep this up to date?" Battle said. "When you have a building that old, there's always things that need to be fixed. How can we improve the experience for our fans ― fans in the stadium, the fans in the skyboxes and so forth."

Battle also said they're looking at improvements at Bryant Hall, a dorm heavily populated with athletes. Another idea involves an athlete dining facility after the NCAA changed its rules last year to allow unlimited meals for athletes.

"We're trying to figure out what we need and what would be the best things to do and how we're going to get them paid for," Battle said.

South Carolina football's $50 million project approved, practice facility to be named after USC legend http://trib.al/RWMJNvp

QuoteMore off-the-field changes will be coming next year, as construction for a $50 million football operations center will begin. Phase I approval was granted Tuesday, according to David Caraviello.

"Further approvals to go, but Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner hopeful construction on football ops building can begin in late 2016 or spring of '17," Caraviello tweeted.

The team's indoor practice facility will also get a minor facelift.

Andy Shain reports that USC will name the facility after Steve Spurrier and his wife, Jerri.

The endzone videoboard was just the beginning of renovations to Jordan-Hare Stadium: http://ow.ly/W0kcI

QuoteAuburn is seeking feedback to its plans for a major renovation of the North end zone of Jordan-Hare Stadium, which would include an expanded concourse and walkways, club seating, additional concessions, new locker rooms, video board, recruiting lounge and other amenities.

Tigers Unlimited, the fundraising arm of Auburn's athletics department, issued an email survey to "approximately 5,000" accounts and has setup an email account and website for fans to give feedback to the plans.

If approved, the renovation would start following the 2016 season and be open for the start of the 2018 football season, a source with knowledge of the plans told...

$64.5 million O'Dome renovation is underway

QuoteLate in the 2015 football season construction crews had worked to fence off the East side of the O'Dome.

Now they've torn into it to begin what renovation work they can ahead of the full launch of the massive overhaul. Full work won't begin until March, once a handful of sports seasons requiring use of the O'Dome conclude.

The project will provide luxury boxes, chair-back seating throughout the lower bowl and upgraded amenities, while reducing seating by about 500.

The project is scheduled for completion in December 2016...

Latest in the college athletics arms race? Branding facilities through graphics that often come w/ big price tags. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/12/29/graphics-branding-college-football-millions-advent/78039496/ ...

QuoteWith a football practice facility set to open in the summer of 2011, Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs wanted to tell the story of the Tigers' success through graphics that would keep the full-sized playing area from looking like the interior of an airplane hangar.

So he looked to Advent, a graphics and branding company that turned more than 300 yards of wall space into splashy orange-and-blue displays of the program's success and motivational credos.

The cost? Nearly $750,000 to start, plus updates over the past five years that cost about $60,000, according to documents Auburn provided in response to an open-records request from USA TODAY Sports.

Auburn's display and its price tag are becoming the norm among college athletics programs as they seek touches that administrators and coaches think will give them even the slightest competitive advantage. Auburn's was among more than 600 projects Advent says it has done since 2007.
