In its last four road games, Georgia has now lost by one on a controversial clock malfunction (at Texas A&M), by two at South Carolina, and in overtime at Florida and Kentucky. Throw in the loss at Oakland (Mich.) in December, or the seven-point home loss to Marquette that month, or the six-point home loss to South Carolina last month ...

This season has just been a bear. Georgia has played one of the tougher schedules in the country (rated No. 26 as of Saturday) and is out-scoring opponents by an average of 3.5 points per game. All in all, it's played well enough to have a much better record and be in much better shape.

But the bottom line is the bottom line, and Georgia's record (13-10) is not good enough right now, and barring a strong run down the stretch Mark Fox is likely to miss the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in his eight years at Georgia. The NIT isn't even a given at this point.

"We rebooted today. I talked specifically to a couple players: 'Here's how I want you to play.' To make it simple for them," Calipari said on The John Calipari Show. "And the great news for all you fans: Today was good and there were a lot of players smiling."

The "tweak" became a thing in March of 2014, days before the SEC Tournament, after those Wildcats became the first team in 34 years to fall from preseason No. 1 to all the way out of the Associated Press Top 25 with nine regular-season losses. Calipari said then that he had a lightbulb moment and his tweak "changed everything."

Like that team, this one has slipped from No. 1 in the rankings to No. 15 after losing three of the last four games (and five overall). Kentucky's defense has slipped and its offense has bogged down, so Calipari knows an adjustment is in order. Just not a tweak. So, they just need to get back to that version of themselves — a reboot.

Calipari said he gave the players off Sunday and he spent the whole day watching film to "really evaluate where this has gone the last three weeks and why." He met with the team for about an hour Monday morning before classes.

"The players aren't going to fix this themselves," Calipari said. "They need to be taught, coached."

The coach did have one warning for fans: If it took three weeks for the Wildcats to devolve into their current state, it might take just as long to fix it.

John Calipari isn't a fan of it. Kentucky freshman Malik Monk said the coach doesn't like it at all.

The topic is zone defense, and like it or hate it, Kentucky is playing more and more of it. Calipari has ceded control to assistant Tony Barbee as the Wildcats have begun to practice it.

"It's a good change of pace," Barbee said. "We have the attributes to be a fantastic zone team: We're long, we're athletic, we cover a lot of ground. And it's a work in progress, like our man defense, like our man offense."

"I played zone before; it's pretty easy to play zone," Monk said. "But Cal doesn't like it at all. He doesn't like zone. But if it's something we're good at, we gotta stick to doing it. And he said we're pretty good at it."

Kentucky has gotten stops, Barbee said, on 21 of the 30 possessions it's played zone defense in the last two games.

Calipari joked to Doris Burke during the Kentucky Scouting Combine live on ESPNU that he would deploy a zone for the first time in his coaching career to get minutes for his son Brad and be a hero at home with the missus.
