Florida is now a little thinner at linebacker after losing freshman Alex Anzalone for the rest of the spring because of a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

"It's a freak deal," Muschamp said. "It was in a tackling drill. He just got hit on it the wrong way. Disappointed for him but he's going to be a really good player, so we're going to be fine."

Anzalone enrolled in January and was backing up starter Antonio Morrison at middle linebacker.

Of the 12 SEC players drafted by the NFL on Thursday, 11 of them had a 4- or 5-star ranking before entering college.

Of the 12 SEC players drafted in Thursday's first round, nine were selected as ESPN 150 prospects. And of those nine, six were ranked among the top 60 prospects nationally when they were going through the recruiting process in high school.

Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher was only ranked two stars (as a DE) coming out of high school, yet the Kansas City Chiefs took him with the first pick. Oklahoma offensive lineman Lane Johnson wasn't ranked at all (as a QB), but went No. 4 to the Philadelphia Eagles.

It wasn't until Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner went to the New York Jets at No. 9 that a five-star player was taken in the first round. In total, five five-stars were taken in the first round, according to Rivals rankings.

In just a small sample size it shows us that despite all of the resources dedicated to evaluating and scouting prospects, players can still slip through the cracks. Another thing to consider is it's impossible to fully predict what a player will do once he gets to college.

Johnson, for example, weighed 202-pounds and was a quarterback in high school. Now he weighs 300-plus and is a left tackle. How could anyone have predicted he'd put on 100-plus pounds and completely shift positions?

Matt Patchan OT, UF:  After a rocky road at Florida, Patchan transferred to BC where he can play immediately in '13 having earned his degree

Omar Hunter DT, UF:  Signed as an undrafted free agent with the Steelers.

Richard Samuel, RB, UGa:  Parade All-American was described as a team player and solid citizen at Georgia.  He stared as a backup to Moreno, moved to OLB when needed but was moved back to TB.  He left disappointed and frustrated and is now willing to do anything for an NFL team.

Burton Scott, Vigor ATH, Bama: Described as the most surprising bust from Bama's '08 class, Scott played WR as a true freshman, redshirted to learn the defense, and lost his starting spot to D. Milliner. He transferred to USA.

D Milliner, CB, Bama: First round draft pick, 9th overall, an early departure from the '10 class.

Tyler Love, OL, Bama: 6-7 "Can't Miss OT" left with a degree and rings as one of Saban's out-placed players after the '11 season.

Daniel Lee Jesus Fluker, OT, Bama: 11th overall pick in 2013 draft.

Sheldon, DT, MU:  16th overall pick in 2013 draft.

Russell Shepard, QB, LSU:  Underutilized ATH for LSU, undrafted free agent signee by the Eagles.

Jelani Jenkins, LB, UF:  Drafted by Fins in the 4th round. Former star at Buster Olney Our Lady of Good Counsel

Janzen Jackson, DB, UT: One of Kiffin's recruits, after the armed robbery of the Pilot on Cumberland, Jackson landed at McNeese St. on his way to the CFL.

Christine Michael, RB, A&M: After landing in Sumlin's dog house and being buried behind Johnny Football for his senior and only SEC season, a less dinged Michael was drafted as final pick of the second round, one pick behind Eddie Lacy.

Chris Davenport, DT, LSU: Davenport was switched to the o-line, never found his role, and with a degree plans to play his final season in '13 with Tulane.

Branden Smith, DB, UGa: His spring break suspension was lifted so he could play against Mizzou in their SEC opener.  He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Bucs.

Nico Johnson, LB, Bama: 4th round pick by the Chiefs.

Darius Winston, CB, Hogs: Ended '12 season on the bench. Signed as an undrafted free agent wih the Bengals.

Sharrif Floyd, DT, UF:  First round pick.

Da'Rick Rogers, WR, UT: Escaped Bar Knoxville incident with a lawyer as a head coach, helped get same lawyer fired. He played last year for Tennessee Tech and signed as an undrafted free agent with the Bills.

Marcus Lattimore, RB, SC:  All-SEC performer with horrific knee injury was drafted by the 49ers in the 4th round.

Spencer Ware, RB, LSU:  One of the RB by committee choices for The Hat, Ware was selected in the sixth round.

Mike Dyer, RB, Auburn: Was still trying to get on with a college despite equalling or breaking some early Bo Jackson records.

Dual-threat quarterbacks are an option at Alabama, Nick Saban says

We have a system on offense," Saban said Wednesday before teeing off at the Regions Tradition Celebrity Pro-Am at Shoal Creek. "You would like to always be able to recruit players that fit your system. But sometimes that's not always possible.

"If there's a great player or a great athlete somewhere that's not quite the fit but he has a great ability to make plays, then I think it's up to us to have the kind of offense that has enough flexibility that we can utilize those kinds of talents in a different way."

Football teams don't win because of the style of play, Saban said.

"You usually win because of people," he said.

Saban then told a story about when he was a sophomore quarterback in high school. In a state semifinal game, his team faced a key fourth-and-10 play from the 20-yard line with 12 seconds remaining. He called all the plays.

"Coach called the last timeout," Saban said. "I was just happy that he was going to have to call that play, so I run over and see my high school coach. I said, 'What do you think we ought to do, Coach?' And he says, 'What do you think?' He called me 'Young Nicky' all the time. I said, 'I think you ought to call this play. That's what I think.

"He said, 'Look, I don't care what play you call. You've got the fastest left halfback in the state and a three-time all-state guy playing split end. Just make sure one of the two of them gets the ball.' So I call '26 crossfire pass.' I faked to the left half and threw it to the split end, and we won."

The point of the story was simple.

"If you've got good players, you've got to get them the ball," Saban said, "and you've got to have enough flexibility in your system to be able to do that."

Saban has made a habit of this ever since he formulated his first true signing class at Alabama.

The early decision-makers rarely receive much acclaim. The national TV cameras only seem to show up for the announcements that are made in the days leading up to National Signing Day.

That shouldn't be viewed as an indicator of how important those particular signings are.

6-foot-5, 330-pound offensive tackle from West Monroe, La., Cameron Robinson made quite the impression at The Opening earlier this month.

Big enough to become 247Sports.com's new No. 1 overall recruit for the class of 2014. He replaced defensive end Da'Shawn Hand.

No word on whether he got to talk to the Hand.



He has offers from the SEC-West save A&M and Auburn.

Former Pinson Valley star Earnest Robinson has failed to academically qualify to play at Auburn and will enroll at East Mississippi Community College...

Robinson, who signed with Auburn in February, had been taking classes in a credit recovery program at Center Point this summer in an effort to replace three 'D' grades with A's so he could qualify.

Robinson is the second Auburn signee to fail to qualify due to academics. Former McGill-Toolen quarterback Jason Smith will enroll at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy this fall.
