QuoteWhatever crack you're tempted to make on his way out the door, whatever joke you're dying to tell at his expense, make sure you also say this about John Franklin III:

He leaves the Plains with an Auburn degree.

That public administration degree has allowed the former quarterback to leave Auburn this week to play his final season of college football as a grad transfer wide receiver at Florida Atlantic. Lane Kiffin is quickly turning that program into Conference USA's version of Last Chance U.

That Auburn degree also may give Franklin the last laugh on so many critics who judged him harshly simply because they saw glimpses of him on the so-called reality show of the same name during his one season at East Mississippi Community College.

As for Franklin's football time with the Tigers, he's not the first player whose production didn't equal the anticipation. In the opinion of the Auburn coaches and other observers, he simply wasn't quite good enough as a quarterback or wide receiver or return man to earn significant snaps. It was his good fortune to have then-offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee witness his one big day at EMCC in person. It was his misfortune to be a quarterback who traveled a similar road as Cam Newton and Nick Marshall from major FBS program to isolated junior college to Auburn.

The road detours to Boca Raton...

Funny how things have turned out a year after Kiffin and Franklin opposed each other in the Iron Bowl. Neither East Mississippi nor Auburn was Franklin's last chance. Truth really is stranger than reality TV.
