One of the top cities to retire. It notes the beauty of the Ozarks and Beaver Lake nearby, as well as part time jobs available at the U of A. The reason I bring it up, is one could conclude it's also a great place to go to college, i.e. low crime rate, things to do, low pollution, cost of living etc. We all know it is, but I thought it was great publicity for the area! :razorback:

Now that may be about the worst kept secret in the world!! Often remind my wife the mistake we're making by not retiring to the N.W. part of the state (currently live in central Arkansas). However, to keep peace in the family I've given up that dream (at least for the time being). Her reason for not wanting to move: both our boys and their families live in eastern Tennessee and she doesn't move a foot further away from them. However, for the time being I've been able to convince her that we will NOT be moving to the Volunteer State. That remains a discussion for another time and place. :-\

Good luck with that.
BTW, you might add sometime that moving just a little further away only adds a little drive time on the occasions that you would need to drive.  However, you'd be eating, breathing, living in the mountain area every minute of everyday that you didn't have to drive.

That's an honest win-win in my mind.   Now if she actually wants to LIVE in LR.........Welcome to the wonders of a 60'' UHD!

So everyone one of the nationalized incidents were justified? There is no race problems with policing? If that is what you believe.....well bless your heart, it must be hard going through life with the obstacles you must have to overcome. Do they send a bus to come pick you up?

Thanks for the input. I've already tried that angle many times without success. I honestly can't get her to understand that by merely adding a couple hours of drive time it wouldn't be like we're moving to another part of the country. However, my dear wife, God bless her, can be very determined when it comes to the kids and won't budge off her position. Obviously we guys have to know when and how to "pick our fights" and on this one I'm afraid I'd be like Custer trying to win at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. No way, Jose. :o

I left NW Arkansas in December of 1987, and I've pretty much spent the last 25+ years trying to get back home. My family and my wife's family are all from Mississippi County, so that's kinda that. We compromise, though, by spending 8-12 weekends a year in Fayetteville.

'Fraid I can definitely feel your pain, bro. Spent three years stationed at BAF "back in the day" and hated virtually every minute of it! Having gone to school in "God's country" I used every opportunity to get back to the hills.

Will never forget one of the real bones of contention up there in Mississippi County. Who really is the true county seat-Blytheville or Osceola? I mean when one (the former) claims to be the NORTHERN county seat and the latter the SOUTHERN you just know it's question that HAS to be answered at the risk of world peace. Funny too when you consider there's less than 25 miles separate the two 'burbs. What a burning issue that's turned out to be! :puke:

BTW that dispute doesn't even take into the account the wonderful "wide spot" on the west bank of Mississippi River known as Armorel just east of Blytheville. Yep, the town that not only honors the two states in which it either resides or borders-Arkansas (AR)/Missouri(MO)-but also the "father of the south" Robert E. Lee (REL). Go figure.......

Just retired and moved to NWA (Farmington/Prairie Grove area).  Right before retiring, I was diagnosed with cancer and since we knew we would be moving here, I began treatment with Highlands Oncology Group.  I mean, how the dickens can you go wrong with HOG on your side!!  We love the area, we love the people, and my medical care has been exceptional.  I'll have to agree, it is one of the best areas to retire to!
BE AFRAID!!  Be very, very afraid!  The Hogs are hungry and you look a lot like lunch!

Bentonville right up the road was also just ranked in the top 10 best cities to raise a family by livability.com, which living here of course I agree.

http://livability.com/top-10/families/10-best-cities-families/2015

So go to college in Fayetteville, move to Bentonville to raise your family, then move back to Fay to retire or Bella Vista.  :)

Or just stay in Fay for all 3, really can't to wrong either way.

V8 manipulate the boys and tell them that their mother is gonna divorce you if they don't move back to AR (preferably NWA) then go from there ;)
Have you ever listened to someone  or read what they put into thoughts and wondered...."who ties your shoelaces for you?"

I have the best of both worlds. When my boys got their schooling done I encourage them to move to NWA for careers and my two youngest did and have very good jobs. All three boys did their high school work at Alma (very good schools) as I and my wife both did too, but we love living just on the verge of the Ozarks with only a 30 min drive to the Hill. Life is good and laid back here and we don't have the traffic problems at rush hour that NWA has. When we get a hankering for NWA we just go visit one of the boys and the granddaughter who is very precoious plus we fish and do most of our trout fishing up there. It is just awesome country to have so close by to visit and go to games at the drop of the hat. We avoid traffic by going early and setting up the tailgates early in the morning. As a young boy growing up in Pine Bluff I didn't know how beautiful some parts of Arkansas was until I moved to Alma at 16 years of age. Life has been good to me and sometimes I feel like I live in NWA too though I am only on the verge of it.

you're close enough, man. Though I prefer Fayetteville as it's only 5 minutes to a razorback game, 30 minutes to a Casino, and 85 minutes to Branson where we keep multi-park season passes. Life is good!

I was chatting with one of our doctors who moved here from Michigan a couple years ago.  He was talking about how high the cost of living is but he went on to say how nice it is to be able to walk just about anywhere without having to look over your shoulder wondering if you're about to get jumped.  It's fairly pricy to live here but when you look at the overall picture, the beauty, low crime, the friendliness of the people, the school systems, it's a bargain.

I am not aware of any problem that is of such a scale to reduce the Quality of Life in NW Arkansas. It remains one of the best places to live in America. Overall it is a bargain.

I say if you have not moved to NWA yet then wait until they have 49 completed to 3 lanes at least through Fayetteville.   Or unless you are retired and can avoid rush hours.   Boy is it a mess during rush hours.  UGLY.

But agree on all counts.  NWA is the happening place in Arkansas for sure.

I second that, 49 to six lanes from Bella Vista to Fayetteville cannot get here soon enough, but it seems to take them years to do five mile stretches.   The section after Elm Springs road is a mess if there's any traffic.  The construction on 49 in Fayetteville seems like it's been going on for 5 years. You learn the back ways quickly, but even they are starting to get clogged. For example Highway 112 between Fayetteville and Tontitown is crowded after 5:00pm each day. The biggest thing holding NWA back is infrastructure.  All the local municipalities wait for the Federal Government to foot the bill while raking in the property tax revenues.

I'd like to see a four lane East-Bypass of some sort build.  Not going to happen in my lifetime.
