When Donnie Tyndall refers to Armani Moore as a ''hard-headed dude,'' the Tennessee coach means it as a compliment.

Moore displayed the fearless attitude that has won his coach's approval while collecting 13 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists Wednesday to help the Volunteers rally for a 71-61 victory over East Tennessee State.

Moore was three assists away from posting the second recorded triple-double in school history. Tennessee athletic department spokesman Tom Satkowiak estimated the school's records on that particular statistic date back to the late 1960s. Tyler Smith had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for Tennessee in an 87-69 triumph over UNC Asheville on Dec. 3, 2008.

In October 2013, in a Birmingham, Alabama, ballroom, three storylines emanated from SEC media day: 3. Could the SEC schedule smarter? Turns out ... yes.

The SEC wanted to see a little more hustle. League officials believed, probably rightly, that individual teams were hurting the collective by scheduling soft nonconference slates. The league offered to help: Coaches could come to the league for advice on strategic nonconference scheduling. It even hired, as a consultant, former NCAA vice president of basketball operations Greg Shaheen, a man with the RPI formula fused to his brain stem. If not exactly a mandate, it was a new emphasis, and not everybody was thrilled.

SEC's nonconference schedules, as calculated by the RPI, have improved dramatically: In 2014-15, the average rank of the SEC's 14 nonconference schedules is 100.1. A season ago, the average was 137.1. In 2012-13, it was 148.7. Collectively, the league's RPIs have received a buffer. In the previous two seasons, just four SEC teams (Florida twice, Missouri in 2012-13, Kentucky in 2013-14) have finished the season with RPI figures in the top 40. Thus far this season -- in a so-called one-team league -- five SEC teams rank above that mark...

If your league plays a marginally better nonconference schedule, its RPI receives a marginal boost, which then reflects on league members once conference play begins. If everyone agrees to pick up an extra game they might not have otherwise played -- even if that game ends up being a loss -- everyone is bound to benefit, directly or indirectly, over time.

That the RPI can be transparently tweaked by the competitors it ostensibly measures is another discussion for another day. For now, where the bubble is concerned, the SEC is much better than anyone expected. Its improved nonconference schedules are at least partly to thank.
