CMU is set to hire John Bonamego as its next head coach.  If the report comes to fruition, Bonamengo would replace Dan Enos, who abruptly left CMU Jan. 22 to take the offensive coordinator job at Arkansas.

Bonamengo has spent the past two seasons as the special teams coordinator of the NFL's Detroit Lions. The 51-year-old Bonamengo has spent the past 16 seasons at the NFL level, with all of that time spent coaching special teams either as the coordinator or an assistant.

Arkansas announced that Bret Bielema has signed a two-year extension to his current contract.  The Hogs head man is now signed through December of 2020.

Additionally, Bielema's total pay has been bumped to $4 million for the 2015 season.  There will be additional increases of $100,000 per year through the remainder of the contract, with the new deal averaging $4.25 million over six years.

"Coach Bret Bielema is not only one of the best college football coaches in the nation, he is an outstanding leader," athletic director Jeff Long said in a statement. "What Coach Bielema and his coaching staff have done for our young men, on and off the field, is something that has dramatically changed the course of our program and most importantly positively impacted the lives of our football student-athletes. He is building a championship program in a way that all Arkansans can be proud of. We look forward to his continued leadership of our football program and the many successes yet to come."

Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason is even taking over the defensive responsibilities for the Commodores. FBS head coaching carousel comes to a full and complete stop

This past season's edition of the coaching carousel went on a tad longer than perhaps anyone could have imagined, but with Central Michigan officially introducing John Bonamego as its new head coach today, we now have closed the book on head coaching changes among major college football programs.

In all we saw 15 head coaching changes at the FBS level, including seven from power conferences. Three of those power conference coaching changes came in the Big Ten, with Michigan and Nebraska each turning a page with their respective programs and Wisconsin having to react to losing a coach to the Pac-12.

That's either a brilliant or disastrous hire by Rutgers. I'd lean toward the latter given the program track record, but we'll see.

Kyle Flood is on the verge of shaking up his recruiting operations staff with the expected hiring of a business consultant who is a financial supporter of the football program, three people with knowledge of the decision told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday.

Jeff Towers, who, according to his LinkedIn profile, is an "executive with 30 years of experience leading robust marketing, communications and fundraising programs in some of the largest nonprofit organizations in America,'' is expected to be appointed as the Rutgers football recruiting coordinator, the three people told NJ Advance Media on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about athletic department personnel.

Towers doesn't appear to have any football experience but, according to LinkedIn, he is said to have managed "his own consulting agency assisting nonprofit organizations in strategic planning, board development, marketing, communications and fundraising.'' The profile says he is principal of a New York nonprofit firm called Jeffrey Towers & Associates, which doesn't have a known website, and lists his previous employers as the American Red Cross, UNICEF and Public Interest Data, Inc.

Les Miles is expected to interview former NFL wide receiver Keenan McCardell today for his vacant wide receivers coaching position, according to NOLA.com.

A 17-year NFL veteran who won a Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins in 1991 as a rookie and with Tampa Bay in 2002, McCardell had more than 10,000 receiving yards in his career.

McCardell, 45, is coming off his first season as a college wide receivers coach at Maryland. He was the Redskins' wide receivers coach from 2010-12. A native of Houston, a prime LSU recruiting area, McCardell played for six NFL teams – Washington, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, San Diego and Houston after being drafted in the 12th round in 1991 out of UNLV. He made $265,000 last year at Maryland...

Georgia has hired Thomas Brown away from Wisconsin to be its running backs coach and has moved Bryan McClendon to wide receivers coach, the school announced Monday.

Those moves contradict an earlier report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution stating that Lance Taylor was leaving Stanford to join the Bulldogs as wide receivers coach. Taylor, a former Alabama wide receiver and graduate assistant, is reportedly staying at Sanford.

Ex-Auburn players Kodi Burns, Ryan Pugh land coaching jobs

As had been previously reported as a possibility, Middle Tennessee State announced this past Sunday that Kodi Burns has been hired as Rick Stockstill's wide receivers coach.  Burns spent 2013 as an offensive graduate assistant at AU. Prior to that, he served in the same position under Gus Malzahn at Arkansas State.

One of his former teammates, Ryan Pugh, has been added as a graduate assistant on Les Miles' coaching staff at LSU. Pugh, who started 45 games at center for the AU Tigers from 2007-10, will help with LSU's offensive line. LSU's current line coach, Jerry Grimes, was Pugh's position coach at AU his last two years.

Snow continued to hit the Southeast on Wednesday and with it came a flurry of coaching hires in the SEC. The most notable was at Arkansas where the Razorbacks hired Jemal Singleton as the new running backs' coach. Singleton, formerly at Oklahoma State, will replace Joel Thomas, who left for the same job with the New Orleans Saints. It's not a bad gig for Singleton who walks into what many consider the best backfield in the conference with Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams. Elsewhere, Alabama brought back a familiar name in Freddie Roach. The former Crimson Tide linebacker left his job at South Alabama to take on an unspecified role at Alabama. And LSU made a pair of moves, hiring Ryan Pugh as a graduate assistant and Blaine Gautier as an offensive assistant. Pugh made 45 starts at center for Auburn from 2007-2010.

Speaking of new hires, Barry Odom will have the difficult challenge of trying to replace former Missouri defensive coordinator Dave Steckel this season. Odom, a Mizzou graduate, spoke to the local media before Tuesday's basketball game. The big takeaway? He's not looking to "reinvent" the defense. Odom ran a 3-4 scheme at Memphis last year, but he says the Tigers will still run a base 4-3 with variations of a 3-4. That's common these days in college football. He was also asked about his contract, which hasn't been released yet, but evidently it's still being worked out with the school. "I'm working happily every day," Odom said when asked about it.

Back to being part of what Diaz described as a staff of common ideals, he thrived. Louisiana Tech won nine games and led the country in turnovers gained (40).

Shortly after winning the Heart of Dallas Bowl, Diaz got a phone call. An old friend was on the line: Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen. In what had to conjure flashbacks of 2010, Mullen asked if he wanted to return to his former post as defensive coordinator. Diaz said yes.

"It's not a fun lesson to learn," Diaz said of his fall from Texas and subsequent revival at Louisiana Tech. "But it reinforces who you are and what you believe in."

He added: "It's always easy this time of year to write the article, Hey, here's this coach who has this great scheme. There's no great scheme. If there was a great scheme, we'd all do it. What it was [at Louisiana Tech] was we were all bought in and all committed. We all pointed the same direction.

"That's what I wanted more than anything."

Where the carousel stops

You might wonder who West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen hired to replace Shannon Dawson, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who left Morgantown to take the same job at Kentucky. Turns out, Holgorsen decided not to hire a full-time assistant but to rely on a 23-year-old graduate assistant — from Kentucky.

Former Prestonsburg quarterback Michael Burchett, who walked on at UK and also spent some time at WVU, will play a key role in helping the Mountaineers offense, says Holgorsen.

"(His duties are) very similar to what my previous two quarterbacks coaches were," Holgorsen told CoachingSearch.com. "Bright, bright young guy. He will be leaned on to drill the quarterbacks, which he does a great job with, which is the same thing Shannon and Jake (Spavital) did. He'll be in charge of organizing the scripts, as far as what I want to get done for the day."

Jake Spavital is now offensive coordinator at Texas A&M. Dawson will be starting his first fall camp with Kentucky on Friday...

Mike Leaf, one of the most successful coaches at the Division II level, abruptly resigned from his position after player accused him of making drunken sexual advances

He didn't want to return to Leaf's house. But he wanted to take care of his coach. So he walked with Leaf home, holding Leaf up at times, he said.

    The next thing the player remembered it was shortly after midnight and he woke up lying in Leaf's bed, with Leaf breathing heavily in his ear. Leaf was touching his torso, his leg, his arm, and then began kissing his neck, the player said.

    The player tried to rise from the bed, at which point Leaf held him and said, according to the player: "This isn't what you think it is. You're in my company. You'll be fine."

    The player broke free, gathered his things, and tried to leave. Leaf approached him and suggested they should each punch each other. Leaf swung at him three times, and missed each time, the player said.

Todd Eisner, the longtime NAIA coach, was introduced as Winona State's new head man.
