SHREVEPORT, LA. — The day after the season can be a nervous time for college football coaches – especially for assistants whose areas of expertise have had tough seasons.

But South Carolina's defensive coaches aren't worried about their jobs, at least not today. Fans hoping to hear any minute now that the Gamecocks coaching staff has been gutted in response to this year's disappointing results will be disappointed once again.

"Right now, we finish up recruiting with all our guys," coach Steve Spurrier said Saturday.

That means no changes for at least six weeks, and there's certainly no guarantee that any changes will be made after that.

"If something happens down the road and we can strengthen our staff somewhere, then, obviously, I have to look at that," Spurrier said. "Right now, we will enjoy this win and call our (recruits) and, hopefully, keep all them coming and, hopefully, pick up one or two after this win."

South Carolina's defensive coaches and players did something important beyond help win a football game Saturday. In a 24-21 victory against Miami in the Independence Bowl, the defense gave Spurrier a reason to hope. If he wants to, and he just might want to, Spurrier can point to this performance and the promise of incoming pass rushers (on which this defense in the past has lived and this year died) and go into 2015 with this same coaching staff and a message that things will be better despite that.

"Oh yeah, I expect (all the defensive assistants) to be back unless coach Spurrier tells us something different," defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said Saturday night...

Five LSU assistant football coaches sign contract extensions, John Chavis not among them

Defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, defensive line coach Brick Haley, recruiting coordinator/running backs coach Frank Wilson, tight ends coach Steve Ensminger and wide receivers coach Adam Henry have signed deals to extend contracts that expire in March.

Chavis has reportedly been offered a three-year extension worth $4 million, but has not yet signed it, the sources said. Special teams coach Bradley Dale Peveto and offensive line coach Jeff Grimes are in the first year of their three-year deals and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is in the second year of a three-year deal...

Michigan is expected to announce today that it has signed former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh to the richest deal in college football history...

Harbaugh will become the 15th coach hired at a Football Bowl Subdivision institution since the regular season ended and will be the highest-paid coach in college football with a six-year, $48 million contract...

He is the only coach so far to jump between the NFL and college ranks this season. There could still be movement in the opposite direction, as the 49ers, Falcons, Bears and Jets now have openings after Black Monday firings...

Perhaps the most interesting chain of events has been the surprising domino effect created by Nebraska' firing of Bo Pelini after a 9-3 season. The Cornhuskers surprised many by hiring Mike Riley away from Oregon State, with Gary Andersen then leaving Wisconsin after only one season to replace Riley in Corvallis.

Wisconsin hired Pittsburgh's Paul Chryst, a Madison native and former UW offensive cooridnator, and the Panthers turned to Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi as their next coach.

Reports: Jim Harbaugh swings, misses on two potential staff hires

Harbaugh made a reported run at Kentucky tight ends coach Vince Marrow, the one coach on the list that has not previously worked under Harbaugh. Still, Harbaugh reportedly offered the Wildcats' tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator a job on Friday.

In fact, Marrow went as far as to have a conversation with the nation's top tight end recruit, Chris Clark out of Avon, Conn., about playing for him in Ann Arbor. Sort of.

But then Marrow, too, elected to remain in his current post. Both Kentucky Sports Radio and the Louisville Courier-Journal reported Sunday night that Marrow will stay in Lexington.

Derek Mason will not add a defensive coordinator to his staff in 2015. Instead, the former Stanford defensive coordinator will take on the responsibility himself. He will, however, have someone else run the offense. That will be former Wisconsin assistant Andy Ludwig.

Oklahoma officially announced the firing of its co-offensive coordinators go on Tuesday. On Thursday, Louisville offensive coordinator Garrick McGee emerged as a candidate to replace them.
