Jerry Tipton: Big man Portis is anchor Arkansas has been seeking for years

This season, Portis is well on the way to being an all-league first-teamer, a plausible SEC Player of the Year candidate and, surely, a central figure in Kentucky's game plan for Saturday.

In leading Arkansas to a 23-5 record (12-3 in the SEC), Portis is among the league's top five players in scoring (17.6 ppg), rebounding (8.5 rpg), shooting (56.4 percent) and blocks (1.6 bpg).

"He's been real steady," Anderson said Monday. "That's been a big key to the success that we're having."

Portis' 10 double-doubles this season match the total of such celebrated players as Jahlil Okafor of Duke, Montrezl Harrell of Louisville and Frank Kaminsky of Wisconsin.

Like Karl-Anthony Towns and his Karlito, Portis has an alter ego that he speaks with.

"My little personal thing in my head," he said. "I do it almost every game."

Anderson smiled when asked about Portis' personal chats.

"Just tell him to keep talking to himself," the Arkansas coach said. "He's doing a good job."

Cauley-Stein, Portis among Oscar Robertson finalists

UK junior Willie Cauley-Stein joined Portis among 14 finalists named Thursday for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which goes to the nation's top men's college basketball player.

The award is presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

The award will be presented at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Scarblog: SEC basketball has stepped up so shut up and deal with it

There are five other teams in the conference projected to make the NCAA Tournament: Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. Kentucky has played six games against those teams.

Four of those games were among UK's five closest victories of the season.

Kentucky survived Ole Miss by three in overtime in Rupp Arena. Kentucky outlasted Texas A&M by six in double overtime in College Station.

Kentucky escaped by two on a trip to LSU when the Tigers missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Kentucky trailed at Georgia by six with 5 ½ minutes left Tuesday night and needed to close the game on a stuff-of-champions 16-2 run to walk away with an eight-point victory.

That's four conference games decided by eight points or less, one of them in overtime, another in double overtime, another with the opponent taking a final shot to win.

Kentucky played 13 non-conference games. How many of those teams from outside the SEC finished within eight points of the Wildcats? One. Louisville. [In Louisville.]

Is this the strongest the SEC has ever been? No, but the conference isn't the weak sister it's been portrayed as in recent years, either.

The SEC has improved, and that'll be validated again on Selection Sunday and beyond.

LSU: Here's the funny thing about an RPI scale that changes on a daily basis: as of right now, LSU's blowout loss at home against Tennessee is the fourth sub-100 loss for the Tigers this season. But a road win over a top 50 team will improve the Vols' profile, meaning that not only will it no longer be a sub-100 loss, but it will likely mean that LSU will get another top 100 win on their resume thanks to an earlier win over Tennessee...

A&M: Someone is going to have to explain to me why Texas A&M is in most bracket projections, because I just don't get it. The Aggies don't have any bad losses on their resume — they lost at Alabama and Florida and dropped a game against Kansas State on a neutral court — so let's just get that out of the way now. They do have a 6-9 record against the top 100, but that number is deceiving because only two of those wins came against the top 75. And, curiously enough, both of those top 75 wins were against an LSU team that is anything but a lock to make the tournament after losing to Tennessee at home tonight. That loss will drop the Tigers back out of the top 50 — which is why A&M is a loser on a night where the didn't play — meaning that A&M is now in these tournament projections solely because ... they have not lost a single game to a "bad" team? That's it...
