A.J. Green, No. 5 in 2008 class

QuoteGreen came out of Summerville High as one of the top prospects the state of South Carolina has ever produced. While many of the nation's top programs recruited him, including Florida State, Notre Dame and Florida, the Under Armour All-America Game alumnus made his commitment to childhood favorite Georgia early in the process. Green was part of a 2008 Bulldogs top-10 class that featured Toby Jackson, Brandon Boykin, Ben Jones, Cornelius Washington and DeAngelo Tyson.

As a junior, Green was suspended for the first four games of the season [not certain if he got to play against Arkansas], but still made a team-leading 57 receptions for 848 yards and nine scores, earning All-SEC second-team honors.

Green had 166 receptions for 2,619 yards and 23 touchdowns in three seasons despite missing seven games to injury and NCAA suspension.

Green chose to forgo his final season of eligibility and was selected No. 4 overall in the 2011 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his four seasons in the league.

Honorable mention: Matthew Stafford, No. 5 in 2006 class. Stafford also starred at Georgia and was selected No. 1 overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL draft. Martez Wilson, No. 5 in 2007 class. Wilson played at Illinois and was a third-round selection (No. 72 overall) by the New Orleans Saints in the 2011 draft. Laremy Tunsil, No. 5 in 2013 class. has been a two-year starter at Ole Miss, and is a potential first-round NFL draft selection following the 2015 season.

Eric Berry, No. 4 in 2007 class

QuoteBerry came out of Creekside High in Fairburn, Georgia,. as the most highly coveted cornerback prospect in the 2007 class. While he had offers from USC, Ohio State and many others nationally, he ultimately picked Tennessee over Georgia and Auburn due to a strong relationship with then-Volunteers coach Phil Fulmer and staff. Berry was a member of a top five class for the Volunteers.

As a junior, Berry made 83 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two INT's in 12 starts. He was once again tabbed All-SEC first team, unanimous All-American and took home the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award as well as being a finalist for the Lott Award and Bronko Nagurski Award.

Berry chose to forgo his final season of eligibility following the 2009 season. He left Tennessee with 38 starts in 38 games played, 241 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and 14 interceptions.

Berry was selected No. 5 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2010 NFL draft. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three of his first four years before being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in early December.

Honorable mention: Andre Smith, No. 4 in 2006 class. Smith was two-time first-team All-SEC and All-American at Alabama before being taken No. 6 overall in the 2009 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Dre Kirkpatrick, No. 4 in 2009 class. Kirkpatrick was a two-time All-SEC second-team pick at Alabama before being selected No. 17 overall in the 2012 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. Mackensie Alexander, No. 4 in 2013 class, and Myles Garrett, No. 4 in 2014 class, are future NFL draft choices with high pick potential.

When Recruiting mixes with Twitter: A wild, weird new world of fan-athlete interaction: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/college-football/article/Twitter-blurs-boundaries-between-recruiting-6055730.php?t=f40ef8c69cb087cae0&cmpid=twitter-premium ... via @HoustonChron

QuoteThanks to a wave of Internet enhancements and instant access via smartphones and tablets, those who follow recruiting have turned the practice into an interactive sport, with otherwise law-abiding citizens unknowingly becoming NCAA rule-breakers...

"It's a little bit creepy, especially when you've got 40-year-old men doing this," Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter  said. "Fans can look up these kids so easily, that's the scary part. I think back to that old 'Saturday Night Live' skit with William Shatner speaking at a 'Star Trek' convention. He tells all the people who are dressed up, 'Get a life!' Recruiting has become that for so many people - they live on Twitter to see what these kids are going to do.

"On the other side of it, that passion speaks to how popular the college game is year round. But you want to ask people to tap the brakes a little bit. I don't know how you do that."

Last week, DeRuyter visited a coach and a recruit at a California high school and later dropped in at a neighboring school for the same purpose.

A prospect approached him at the second school, with what had become news from DeRuyter's first visit, thanks to Twitter.

"He told me he knew I had been seeing so-and-so," a bemused DeRuyter said. "He had read it on social media - and it had only been 15 minutes since I'd been at the other place."

Secrets, for the most part, are few and far between when it comes to recruiting in 2015.

100 days, 100 players: No. 3 Vernon Hargreaves III http://es.pn/1LFsxCF

QuoteHargreaves III was considered the top cornerback in the country in 2013 class coming out of Wharton High in Tampa. The son of Arkansas linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves picked the Florida Gators in July 2012 over USC, Clemson, Miami and a host of others after considering more than 50 offers. He headlined a top 10 Florida 2013 class that included Kelvin Taylor, Keanu Neal, Daniel McMillan, Roderick Johnson, Marcell Harris Alex Anzalone, Demarcus Robinson and others.

Entering the 2015 season, the pure cover corner is expected to be named to almost every preseason All-American team, and he's very likely to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

Honorable mention: Dominique Easley, No. 3 in 2010 class. Easley battled knee injuries at Florida, but was still dominant at times. He was selected No. 29 overall in the 2014 NFL draft by the New England Patriots.

Cyrus Kouandjio, No. 3 in 2011 class. After starting starting his last two seasons at Alabama, Kouandjio chose to forgo his final season in Tuscaloosa and was drafted in the second round (No. 44 overall) in the 2014 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills.

Dorial Geen-Beckham, No. 3 in 2012 class. Green-Beckham played two seasons at Missouri before being dismissed from the program. Following a transfer season at Oklahoma, he decided to forgo remaining eligibility and enter the 2015 NFL Draft where he is expected to be drafted in the first two rounds.

Cam Robinson, No. 3 in 2014 class. Robinson started all season as a freshman at Alabama, and is considered a top-notch NFL prospect following the 2016 season.

Alabama in line for 5th straight recruiting title, but Nick Saban's no fan of rankings. http://ow.ly/IpPZB

Quote...for a second straight year, Alabama enters signing day atop all three rankings based on the known commitments. 247Sports says Alabama has six 5-stars, Scout has that number at five and Rivals says four. Of Scout's top 100 players, 10 are committed to Alabama.

The group includes the nation's No. 2 quarterback (Blake Barnett), No. 1 receiver (Calvin Ridley) and No. 2 safety (Deionte Thompson).

Saban isn't big on these rankings.

"I say this every year, but recruiting is not an exact science," he said on signing day 2012. "No one knows for sure how these players are going to develop in the future."

He illustrated that point with an example the year before that.

"Just because you pick the best puppy dog with the biggest feet that doesn't mean he's going to grow up to be the best hunting dog," Saban said in 2011 after signing the No. 1 class according to 247Sports and Rivals. "A lot of these young players are very good. They are very talented. They've had great success as high school players but they are going to make a tremendous amount of improvement, almost as much as the time they were freshmen in high school to the time they are a senior in high school, they're going to do the same thing in college.

"I think the challenge for us is to help these players develop so that they can have success not only on the field but in the classroom and to continue to develop personally, academically and athletically."

In the 100 days leading up to signing day 2015, RecruitingNation will be looking back at our ESPN recruiting rankings from 2006 to the present and count down the best player of the past 10 years at each ranking position, No. 100 to No. 1.

Julio Jones, No. 2 in 2008 class

QuoteJones came out of Foley High in Alabama as a near lock for the Crimson Tide, but Alabama received a battle from Florida, Florida State and Oklahoma before Jones announced for the home-state school on Feb. 6, 2008. Jones was part of a star-studded Alabama class that included Mark Barron, Terrence Cody, Marcell Dareus, Dont'a Hightower, Mark Ingram, Barrett Jones, Courtney Upshaw, Robert Lester, Michael Williams, Brad Smelley, Damion Square and Tyler Love.

As a freshman in 2008, Jones became the favorite target of quarterback John Parker Wilson. In 14 games, all starts, the Under Armour All-America Game alumnus caught 58 passes for 924 yards and four touchdowns, as well as totaling 956 all-purpose yards. He was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and All-SEC second team by the league coaches, and Freshman All-American by numerous publications...

Jones chose to forgo his final season of eligibility in Tuscaloosa and enter the 2011 NFL draft. In three seasons at Alabama, he caught 179 passes for 2,653 yards and 15 TDs, and totaled over 3,000 all-purpose yards.

Jones was drafted No. 6 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2011 draft. He has been selected to a pair of Pro Bowls, including following the 2014 season.

Honorable mention: Percy Harvin, No. 2 in 2006 class. Harvin starred on a pair of Florida Gators BCS National Championship teams before he was selected No. 22 overall in the 2009 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Manti Te'o, No. in 2009 class (sic).

Jadeveon Clowney, No. 1 in 2011 class

QuoteClowney came out of in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as arguably the best prospect the state had ever produced...

Clowney chose to forgo his final season of eligibility in Columbia as everyone expected. He finished his three seasons at South Carolina with 47.0 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, and a school record nine forced fumbles.

Clowney was drafted No. 1-overall by the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL draft. He again battled injury most of his rookie season, accounting for just seven tackles.

Honorable mention: All six prospects ranked No. 1-overall that are NFL draft eligible have been drafted. That list is: Myron Rolle, No. 1 in 2006 class. Joe McKnight, No. 1 in 2007 class. Da'Quan Bowers, No. 1 in 2008 class. Matt Barkley, No. 1 in 2009 class. Ronald Powell, No. 1 in 2010 class, and Clowney. Mario Edwards Jr., No. 1 in 2012 class will be selected in the 2015 NFL draft, and Robert Nkemdiche and Leonard Fournette are locks to be drafted high in future NFL drafts.

SEC morning links http://es.pn/1KSiFnO

So how accurate are recruiting rankings and what can we do to improve them? Football Study Hall's Bill Connelly takes a look... -- but of course no subjective evaluation standard is perfect. It's an interesting subject to explore.

QuoteThoughts on college football recruiting rankings, their imperfections, and how they could be improved in the future.

There's a difference between flawed and fatally flawed

If you use nothing but recruiting rankings as a guide, you can come up with a reasonably accurate assessment of who will and won't be good from year to year. Or at least, you'll have a nice starting point for such an assessment. Obviously using only recruiting rankings in 2014 would have left you aiming way too high on teams like Florida and Michigan and way too low on teams like TCU and Oregon. But generally speaking, it'll get you a certain distance down the road.

Where the two camps -- "recruiting rankings are lifeblood" vs. "recruiting rankings are overrated/flawed" -- differ is in the development angle, of course. There are, after all, three pieces to basically any team sport: talent acquisition, talent development, and talent deployment. The middle is the toughest to talk about because, among other things, it involves things we can't see.

Recruiting and recruiting rankings tell us about the acquisition portion, and stats and our own eyeballs tell us about deployment. But development allows for teams like those on the 538 list of overachievers to make up ground on those who acquire a higher level of talent through acquisition.

Whether it's the "find the big-boned Northern European types and get some excellent running backs to run behind them" approach of Wisconsin or the "find great athletes and teach them a position" approach of someone like Missouri, certain programs/coaches have been particularly solid at making up ground through development.

The question, then, becomes this: what should recruiting services do about that? ...

32 former 5-star recruits are available in this year's draft. 12 of them are considered to be potential 1st-rounders: http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2015/02/landon_collins_1_of_a_dozen_5-.html ...

QuoteTwenty six players from the 2011 recruiting class earned five stars from Rivals.com. Nine of those players are available in this year's draft, but offensive tackle La'el Collins of LSU is the only one that is considered a potential first-rounder.

Three of the five-star recruits from the 2011 class were first-round picks in the 2014 NFL Draft: Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina went No. 1 overall to the Houston Texans, Sammy Watkins of Clemson was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the No. 4 pick and the Green Bay Packers took Ha Ha Clinton-Dix of Alabama with the No. 21 overall pick in last year's draft.

Four of the 26 were previously first-round picks: Alabama's Dee Milliner went No. 9 overall to the New York Jets in 2013, while Florida's Sharrif Floyd and Matt Elam went with the No. 23 pick to the Minnesota Vikings and No. 32 overall to the Baltimore Ravens respectively. The Gators' Dominique Easley was selected by the New England Patriots with the No. 29 overall pick in 2014.

SEC 5-stars (* denotes potential first-round pick):

2012 five-star recruits:
    Landon Collins, Alabama*
    Dante Fowler, Jr., Florida*
    Dorial Green-Beckham, Missouri*
    D.J. Humphries, Florida*
    Trey Williams, Texas A&M
    T.J. Yeldon, Alabama

2011 five-star recruits:
    La'el Collins, LSU*
    Ray Drew, Georgia
Dee Hart, Colorado State (via Alabama)

2010 five-star recruits:
    Michael Dyer, Louisville (via Auburn)

2009 five-star recruit (of the 33 five-star recruits in this class, four were previously first-round picks):
Andre Debose, Florida (NCAA granted him sixth season after injuries)

Good read from @jcshurburtt on winning with 3-star talent http://ow.ly/LoDIr

QuoteRecruiting Moneyball: Optimizing 3-star talent

I am going to say something honest here that most of my peers in the recruiting industry will not tell you- it is a myth that you can't win at the Power 5 level in college football recruiting classes with up to 90 percent of your class rated three stars.

I mean, it's absolute hogwash. It's recruiting industry Pravda and anyone who says otherwise really hasn't looked at the facts.

Not all three-stars are created equal

First and foremost, the recruiting industry is not as detailed when it comes to three-star rated prospects. Of all of the ratings given out to major college football prospects, none vary as much as the three-star. There are prospects with dozens of offers that have that rating. There are prospects with one offer that have that rating. Offers are not indicative of talent, but are an example of how the opinions of analysts and college coaches alike are not as in consensus with the three-star.

There are three-stars that are "value" threes who many really feel could end up being great at the college level and playing in the NFL, there are "in-between" threes who end up being role players in college (that should be two stars, which these days is wrongfully interpreted as being "bad" or "average" by prospects, parents and even the media) and there are "get you fired" three stars- guys that are good high school players that may have impressed someone somewhere at a camp or something, but who lack the ability to play college football...
