I'm sure he is doing this to help out his son before he retires.

Let's hope this is just a rumor

Monte will have an immediate impact at Tennessee. This will do wonders for their defensive recruiting. Man, this is great for the SEC. Another top notch coaching staff. I really think this hire will go a long way to bringing Tennessee back from the gutter.

AnthroHog

Does he become the highest paid DC in all of college football?

probably not, don't you think he would be willing to take a huge paycut just to coach with his son?  That is like a fathers' dream

Rumor is Monte is going to put in two years then retire.

Ed Oregeron is rumored to be joining the staff as well.
I would take Oregeron on our staff just for the recruiting. If he can get that kind of talent to ol piss to make hootie look so good, he can do it anywhere.

I had heard about the Orgeron connection....that would make a pretty combination, the Kiffens and him.  Ed can recruit, he just had trouble winning with his recruits.
I don't like to plan my day because then the word premeditated comes into the conversation.

Isn't his dad one of the best DC's ever?

Then add on Orgeron.....they will be the best in the East in no time.  They will be nasty good.

Not sold on the head coach, don't care how good his assistants are.

He's also one of the best defensive coordinators in the National Football League, which is considered by many to be one of the best football leagues in the entire country.

Good point.  Just the same, if it were up to me and Monte Kiffin was interested in being DC for the Hogs, he'd be hired before dinner time tonight.

Who cares.  He is ancient and has been out of CF for a lifetime.

I agree.  I don't understand the fascination with Kiffin.  While Monte may be a good DC, I don't think the younger is on that same level.

Yeah, but its not like he's been a Wal-Mart greeter for the last 30 years.  Tampa Bay currently has the #4 overall defense in the NFL.  They have a good defense year in and year out.  Unike Petrino, Spurrier, Saban, etc., he's actually been successful as a coach in both college and the NFL.

but would you agree that if he doesn't have an ego the size of Mc-A-Nutt, that whomever he hires for OC could be the makings of a "dream team" of coaches?
Nutt couldn't coach himself out of a wet sack, but I was more than willing to say that if he had let Gus do his thing, we would have been very exciting and tough.

Frank was only as good as his assistants later in his coaching tenure

It's not like Tennessee and John Chavous have been terrible defensively all along; the downfall of UT football has been nearly exclusively offense related.   I, for one, am glad he's out of an SEC job for now; as for Kiffin,  I'll be concerned once he actually has the job at UT.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Tim Harris

I think this was expected by most.  He will be there a couple years to help Lane get TN off the ground and then he will retire.

oldfart

i would take monte as our DC in a heartbeat....

Anyone want to take bets on how long it takes for there to be a thread wanting Chavis as the next DC for us?

Those threads have already been posted, the day after Fulmer was fired.

Yes his name was thrown around with many others but now that he is officially unemployed I figure he should get his own thread soon.

Thanks for the info, but means nothing to me!  In all honesty, one thing I have taken away from this year is the only way Petrino's offense can be stopped is if we stop ourselves.  More talent and consistency will have Arkansas in the mix soon enough.

The Hog

I bet that most of you on the board do not remember Monte Kiffin when he coached with Lou at Arkansas.  Some of the best defenses Arkansas ever put on the field.  He did something right to make it to the pros and one of the most respected DC's in the business.  If this is true, he will impact the East for sure.  This is big for recruiting of defensive players just as we think Petrino is great for our offensive recruiting.

From all I've read and heard the Ed Orgeron to UT is nothing but a rumor.
He and his wife are said to be quite happy living back in Louisanna and have no interest in chasing kids around for their signatures.

I guess we'll see in a week or so, but I have serious reservations/doubts about Ed O. winding up in Knoxville.

As Joe Kines said, Football is football.  If you can teach fundamentals and recruit you can compete in the college game.  He can do both.  Lane and Ed can recruit, Monte can keep them in games until they build their offence.  IMO

Defence was our biggest weakness this year.  Offence wins games, defence wins championships.  We need a Chavis.

Chalk up an easy win for the Razorbacks.  A 33 year old HC who hasn't done squat in his career is not making me shake in my boots.

Ed O's settlement from Ole Miss for being fired may not allow him to take a college job and still get the $$ from Ole Miss.

Coaching in the pro's allows him to build for NFL retirement, and draw his OM "golden handcuffs" check

Aren't you the same one that said Ole Miss was an automatic win for the Hogs?

Sorry for the accusation.  You were the fellow that told Hog fans we would be upset when Ole Miss beat us.  You have any Kentucky Derby picks for next year?

I will admit up front that Kiffin was not my first choice. But to not want to give Monte the respect he has earned is silly at best.

ALLVOL

I know many on here have an illogical hatred of UT. But to assume the LK will be a bad coach is as dumb as some of UT fans thinking he will be great. He has some things on his resume that is pretty good. Who he (or reports) he is bringing is impressive.

BigHog396

Orgeron was lined up to come here with Kiffin... Until Petrino took the job.  Joining him at UT makes sense.

Lane Kiffin hasn't proved a thing.
I think Tennessee deserved a much better choice the 33 year old Kiffin.

To me hiring Monte Kiffin to help his son is similar to recruiting two family members to play QB for the same team - it just doesn't work!
