Calipari immediately went to twitter and said he's not interested in the job.  Who knows.  Maybe the rumor was leaked and now he has to back away.

Hawg Red

And then tweets that he isn't.

QuoteJohn Calipari ‏@UKCoachCalipari 17 minutes ago

Even though Anthony and Tyreke are in NOLA, I have no interest in the Pelicans or any other job. I have a great job and I'm happy at UK.

It could all go either way or be a combination of things, as usual.

latrops

Interesting.  Not sure why the Pelicans would fire Williams at this point without having a top successor lined up.  Things are on the uptick there and it wouldn't make sense to dump the coach just to settle for someone else's assistant or a retread.

Because Williams is a dumpster fire of an NBA coach.   It is hard for any journeyman assistant to not be an upgrade, let alone any sought after candidate they might secure.

I wouldnt go that far now, he was not that bad of a coach. He did help take that team to the playoffs in th west, and they did have plenty of injuries throughout the year. He also had them playing close to GS as well

I'm no Pelicans' fan, so I don't really know truly how good or bad of a coach he is, but here's what I see at a cursory glance:

- Annual records since Chris Paul trade: 21-45, 27-55, 34-48, 45-37
- Ton of injuries this season
- Seems to be a player's coach
- Average margin of defeat vs best team in league in playoffs was 8 points

Don't get the firing. Maybe he's not the next Popovich, but it looks like he certainly did enough to keep his job for another season.

Agreed.

Seems obvious Lebron wants a different coach, and I can't see Cal turning down a chance to coach him.

The Cavs coach is a moron and I think thats the only job Cal would even consider.

Maybe the Bulls actually.

onebadrubi

Williams single handidly blew one and maybe even 2 games against Golden state.  The man could not coach and he has a superstar in the making at his fingertips.  A decent coach has them off the bubble the last day of the regular season and wins a game or two in the first round.  I don't see anyone beating GS though.  New Orleans is doomed for the rest of Davi's rookie contract though.  They for whatever reason have no picks what soever.

I second also that Cav's coach is an idiot.

Why would Blatt get fired? I knows they had issues but they're in the ECF.

Lebron hates him. Tried to get him fired in Jan.

Hawg Red

LeBron doesn't like Blatt and he was hired before the Cavs thought they could actually get LeBron back. Dan Gilbert will not hesitate to buy him out if that's what LeBron really wants. If they win it all or go to the Finals, it'll be tough to fire him, though.

Wilbon said he knows that somebody today who is close to Cal (maybe not Cal himself) contacted the Pelicans today that Cal wanted to talk.  That Pelican team is not that far from being  good anyway  Davis best center in the league   Holiday is above average PG who sometimes plays like a star.  Anderson can shoot enough to keep them from doubleteaming Davis  They are paying Gordon $14,000,000 and have to do something there.  I think Cal could get Tyreke Evans to take a step forward.  I like there bench a little with Cole, Asik and Pondexter and Toney Douglas.  Some trades must be made  but this team is certainly not without talent and maybe Cal can get a free agent or 2.  Gordons contract is a big big drawback.

Hawg Red

Eric Gordon is entering the final year of his contract. Not all that big of a drawback.

He's equally inept as a game coach, a bench coach, and a team leader--  that the Pels made the playoffs was widely regarded as being in spite of him, not because of him.

What do the Bulls have to offer?     They've hit their peak with that roster, and are about to be faced with some ugly roster decisions.    Short of D. Rose somehow becoming the player he used to be, two knee surgeries and 3 seasons ago, they're done.

It'll take an exceptionally dumb team to make that deal.     If they sit tight an extra 4 weeks, they'll be able to get Thibs off the fired pile.  Chicago doesn't seem likely to eat another year of him in the HC gig.

I don't think the Bulls job is that desirable for an established coach.  It is a solid, playoff roster....but they don't look like a potentially elite team as currently constructed unless Rose returns to his MVP form.  That may not be likely given that part of what made him so great was the reckless abandon with which he played prior to his injuries.  Even if he can physically do the things he did a few years ago, I don't know if his mindset is to continue playing that way.  It hasn't appeared to be thus far.

They can't waste another year on Thib given the diminishing returns.  Thib needs to go to a good offensive team that needs help with defense.  The Bulls need a coach, like Hoiberg, that can get more out of that too often stagnant offense.  I'm not saying it will work out, but it is definitely time to try something else.

Anthony Davis doesn't even play Center so how is he the best center in the league?

Well he plays both if we want really technical. But in today's NBA there aren't the traditional PF and Center combo. He is a low and high post player. Just like TD has been his whole career or like J. O'Neal.

Him playing both doesn't mean anything.  He plays maybe 10% of his minutes at the Center position. That would be like calling Dwayne Wade a PG because he occasionally logs minute at the PG position

Not really. Calling someone the best Center in the league is incredibly stupid when he rarely plays center. Davis is a PF, which like most PFs is occasionally asked to play Center

Whatever, the game has changed. He plays the High and low post on offense. Just like Patrick Ewing, Vlade,TD and Chris Webber. Same as he did before Asik got to NO

For the record DWade played point his first season in Miami. But for the majority of his career he has been a off the ball/wing type player. Which I'm sure you will try to stereo type as a 2 guard.

Well, Cal sure endeared himself further to UK fans earlier this week when he spoke at a ceremony for receiving some humanitarian award (I guess he was the only one that voted).  He said that his goal going into last season was NOT to win a championship but to get eight guys drafted by the NBA.  As a result, the season was a success.
