Bo Davis is expected to leave his position as assistant football coach at the University of Alabama over an inquiry into possible recruiting violations, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Davis is expected to resign or be fired from his job.

UA has been conducting an internal investigation and the NCAA has also made inquiries into the matter.

Davis' contract at Alabama runs through 2017 at a salary of $475,000 per year after receiving a one-year extension and a $25,000-per-year raise last June.

Davis became part of head coach Nick Saban's original coaching staff at Alabama when he was hired in 2007 as defensive line coach. He stayed through 2010 before leaving for the same position at Texas, where he stayed for three seasons. He returned to UA in 2014

Yeah, uh, this one is real folks. This is actually MORE serious than Tunsil. Bama is firing their best recruiter and position coach after the university's parallel investigation and that means it is serious. As Hog fans, having two of our rivals getting hit simultaneously is just special. Update:

Word is, the Bama assistant coach that just resigned, has received a phone call from Hugh Freeze.  Coach Freeze indicated that they are looking for someone with his experience, & wanted to know if he is interested in an assistant's position on his staff.  After the Laremy Tunsil interview, Freeze feels certain their staff will have a vacancy soon.

Scarblog: At 11:06 a.m. Friday, the following email appeared in the inboxes of journalists on the University of Alabama athletics mailing list:

The subject line: Statement from Head Coach Nick Saban.

This was the entirety of the statement: Bo Davis has submitted his letter of resignation. We appreciate all the contributions he made to the program and wish him and his family the very best in the future.

It was rather generous to call that a statement. Saban often uses more words to clear his throat and get warmed up before launching into one of his patented rants.

You would think the oddly timed resignation of one of his long-time assistants would merit more than two sentences, one of them containing the cold, hard fact of the departure, the other an upbeat thank you, good-bye and good luck.

Davis isn't just another Alabama assistant football coach. He coached the defensive line, the single strongest position group on the 2015 national championship team. He worked for Saban at LSU, with the Miami Dolphins and in two separate stints with the Crimson Tide.

It seems fair to say that Saban doesn't hire someone more than once if he doesn't trust them and value their contributions.

Assistant coaches typically don't resign out of the blue on April 29, 13 days after the spring game, without a reason, but as has become the norm with Saban's tight-lipped Alabama program, no details were provided.

The departure of Davis would be curious enough if it weren't preceded by a Thursday evening report from TideSports.com that Davis was headed out the door "over an inquiry into possible recruiting violations."

A person familiar with the situation told AL.com it did concern a potential recruiting violation, which may not have been serious in nature, but Davis was not cooperative with the school when questioned about it. It appears that lack of cooperation led to his departure.

It won't be just another staff change for Alabama because Davis wasn't just any recruiter. The recruiting website 247 Sports ranked him the No. 1 recruiter in the SEC for 2016 and No. 2 nationally behind USC's Tee Martin, crediting him with such signees as Gordo linebacker Ben Davis and Texas quarterback Jalen Hurts.

On the day Crimson Tide defensive linemen A'shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed were drafted by the NFL, their position coach was forced to leave the program.

The impact of those losses, especially that of Davis, remains to be seen.

Alabama defensive line coach Bo Davis resigned Friday morning, stepping down after two seasons in that role.

AL.com has learned that Davis is being investigated by the NCAA for potential impermissible contact with recruits.

According to a source familiar with details of the case, Davis is accused of visiting multiple out-of-state recruits during a period when coaches aren't allowed any contact with recruits.

The recruits in question did not end up signing with Alabama, according to the source.

The NCAA contacted Alabama's compliance office regarding the situation, and Davis was questioned and caught being dishonest before eventually resigning, according to the source.

The source compared Davis' alleged violations to the NCAA violations committed by former Florida wide receivers coach Joker Phillips in 2014. Phillips ultimately resigned from Florida, and the Gators received no further penalties from the NCAA...

Marvin Wilson, the five-star defensive tackle from Episcopal High School (Bellaire, Texas), took to Twitter early Wednesday morning to announce that Alabama was back in his recruitment. That news comes on the heels of numerous reports of long-time NFL defensive line coach Karl Dunbar being Davis' successor.

Minutes after news broke about Alabama defensive line coach Bo Davis was set to resign amid allegations of recruiting violations, Wilson, one of the team's biggest targets announced he was no longer considering the Crimson Tide. That has changed six days later.

"I'm not going to comment on any personnel decisions or any kind of investigations," Saban said during Thursday's SEC West coaches teleconference. "I mean we put a statement out. We're all about trying to do things right here at Alabama. We're going to do everything that we can to do it right, make it right. Bo submitted his letter of resignation, and we appreciate the contributions he made to the program here. We wish him the very best in the future."

Davis resigned last week as a result of being investigated by the NCAA for potential impermissible contact with recruits. During the investigation, Davis was less than truthful when asked about his transgressions.

Longtime NFL assistant coach Karl Dunbar reportedly interviewed for the position. Saban said the process of hiring a replacement for Davis is still ongoing.

"Well, we're working on it. We've interviewed a few people," Saban said Thursday. "Now is not really a great time for people to be looking for work and out of jobs, and not a good time for anybody to leave the job they're in. So we're doing the best job we can to do the due diligence to see what's available to us, and we'll hire the best person we can to help develop our players up front."

Davis was the main recruiter of record for five-star defensive tackles Marvin Wilson and Tyler Shelvin. He is considered one of the nation's top recruiters. Following the 2016 recruiting cycle, Davis ranked as the No. 2 recruiter in the nation...

FOIA: University of Alabama paid former assistant football coach Bo Davis more than $316,000 in August, nearly four months after he resigned in the wake of an investigation into NCAA recruiting violations.

Records show that Davis was paid $316,666.66 by check on Aug. 19. He resigned on April 28. UA failed to disclose the payment in response to an open-records request by The Tuscaloosa News, but did reveal other payments made to him in 2016 before and after his resignation.
