Back in the summer of 2013, Auburn thought they had a winner when D'haquille Williams chose the orange and blue Tigers over the Bayou variety.

Turns out LSU coach Les Miles played it right when he let Williams walk out of Louisiana without putting up much of a fight. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn didn't have the support system in place to get the most out of a troubled player, and now Auburn's offense is without arguably its most talented wide receiver. This time, gambling on questionable character didn't work out for Malzahn.

In the SEC, that bet is sometimes the difference between winning the league, and looking for work.

JUCO transfer originally from Louisiana's St. John the Baptist Parish, Williams de-committed from LSU in the summer of 2013 after being lured away by Malzahn. At that point, and long before he rolled through Auburn like a maelstrom, Williams already had a reputation. Every coach in the nation knew it, but every coach in the nation wanted Williams anyway.

Some more than others, though. Miles didn't seem too upset when Williams de-committed.

It may be the least surprising dismissal in the history of college football, and it was a long time coming.

Malzahn could've and maybe should've cut Williams loose last year instead of just suspending him for the bowl game. The Auburn coach could've and no doubt should've let his star-crossed wide receiver go in August rather than simply making him sit out a week of practice.

Instead, despite his ongoing issues, Williams started every game this season. At every turn, Malzahn did what a lot of coaches prefer to do, exhibiting an extraordinary amount of patience with a troubled talent, believing Williams was better off staying within the structure of the program.

He wasn't. He was more distraction than weapon...

Finebaum: I understand Gus Malzahn trying to do the right thing. But what has he done? He brought back someone who people on that campus have had countless incidents with. That's his problem. I don't really care. This isn't a pity party. When you have a guy that has a record of doing this, and you have Gus Malzahn who keeps bringing him back and keeps trying to right the wrongs, you have to wonder if this isn't, at least not the root, but somewhere near the root of the issues that Auburn is having right now. The same thing that got Gene Chizik fired was a loss of discipline. He had players running amok. Not to overreact, but this is exactly one incident that we know about.

Williams, whom each employee said appeared intoxicated, verbally harassed security guards and attempted to get the friend back into the bar using his local celebrity status, only to be thrown out himself. Williams was allowed to return later before throwing a drink at a female patron, according to one witness.

That witness also said Williams threw multiple punches at security guards, who eventually forced him out the door. Once outside, Williams punched the unidentified patron, the witness said.

Records obtained by AL.com show police responded to a fight at the 100 block of West Magnolia Ave. near Skybar at 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

"We have had no one come forward and say that Duke Williams assaulted anyone," Auburn Police Chief Paul Register said.

Amid a 3-2 record and 0-2 start in the SEC this season, turmoil leaked off the field. Receiver D'haquille Williams was booted from the team after throwing punches, including one that reportedly landed on backup center Xavier Dampeer's jaw, last week.

Who does Auburn turn to as it travels to Kentucky next week? Head coach Gus Malzahn and two seniors pointed to the 18-man senior class. One player mentioned Jonathan Wallace, a reserve quarterback-turned-receiver who has yet to make a recordable stat this season.

The embattled Auburn receiver has been invited to a tryout with the Los Angeles Rams, a person familiar with the decision tells SEC Country. Williams and his agent have not responded to SEC Country's requests for confirmation.

The news comes three days after the end of the NFL Draft.

Williams was booted from the Auburn football team in October after breaking teammate Xavier Dampeer's jaw in a fight outside a bar off the Auburn campus. He was rated the top NFL receiver prospect by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. in January 2015.

Rams might have been just the right team for former Auburn wide receiver Duke Williams. Wide receiver is a position of need for the Rams, Williams has a "brother figure" on the team and Los Angeles makes every effort to get its rookies ready for life in the NFL.

Rams signed Williams after he attended their rookie minicamp (which Los Angeles calls "rookie orientation") as a tryout player on the first weekend in May.

After being suspended twice before being kicked off the team at Auburn, Williams doesn't intend to give the Rams any reason to let him go.

"They gave me this chance," Williams told Jack Wang of the Orange County Register. "I'm not here to blow my chance."

Williams played in only five games and caught 12 passes for Auburn in 2015 before being dismissed from the team on Oct. 5. Coach Gus Malzahn dismissed Williams when the wide receiver was involved in an altercation outside a bar after the Tigers' victory over San Jose State on Oct. 3. The brawl left reserve center Xavier Dampeer with a jaw injury that caused him to miss the rest of the season.

During the 2014 season, Williams was suspended twice, including for the Outback Bowl.

After undergoing counseling earlier this year to help with conflict resolution and emotional control, Williams said he's not the same person that he was at Auburn.

"Now I look at life a totally different way," Williams said. "Not everybody's against me. Not everybody wants to hurt me. ..."
