ESPN's First Take mentioned Lane Kiffin as a "strong possibility" along with Mike Leach. Tiffin was the OC and WR's coach under Pete Carroll at USC until the Oakland Raiders hired him as their head coach. I personally don't know a lot about him. I was just curious if anyone on here knew anything, I have not heard him mentioned locally at all.

According to Wikipedia Lane Kiffin's father (Monte Kiffin: current Tampa Bay Bucs Defensive Coordinator) was an defensive coordinator here when Lou Holtz was the coach.

I was not aware of this, but maybe everyone else already knew this.

FL_Hog_Fan

He coached here from 77-80 I believe.  He was the DC if I recall correctly.
What were we arguing about anyway?

This is like the 8th thread about Lane Kiffin today. For some reason the mods keep moving them into the rumors section. I am sure this one will be moved as well.

Why would Kiffin leave after one year?  I'm not sure about Leach...but I'd take him over who just left.

Lane would be a great hire....young, great recruiter, great teacher is what USC website said about him, great offensive mind....HIS offense would do more than just compete in the SEC...it would win. Bring Dad in as DC.

The_Iceman

I think Kiffin would be a great hire for the UofA....

I also think Kiffin would have alot of interest in the job.

Monte was here for two years, 77=78 and 78-79,  Lane Kiffin will not be the next coach.

wow, stop talking before you make yourself look more like an idiot.

The best coach in the nation couldnt do any more with Oakland than he is doing.

He was the Offensive Coordinator during the USC dynasty. Yeah, that dynasty that could have put 23,040 points on us.

I reworked your words because Kiffin took over for Norm Chow, who was there for the majority of the USC dynasty.  Kiffin was OC for two seasons, and was receivers coach and passing game coordinator for the 3 before that (TE's coach for one season prior to that).  Everyone associated with that staff seemed to be high on him, and I don't want to diminish his abilities, but wanted to clear up that he wasn't responsible for everything they did.

No he did not.

Monte Kiffin coached at Arkansas as DC in 1977/78/79. He became the head coach at N.C. State in 1980 where his record for three seasons was 16 wins and 17 losses. He followed another former Razorback assistant, Bo Rein.

hoginky

He is in his first year and has never had Moss on his team.

songofthesword

damn you are dumb. he didn't even coach randy moss. he was traded before he was able to coach him in 1 game

The Raiders suck b/c their organization sucks! Anytime a 150 year old NFL owner hires a coach and tells him "you don't need to hire any coaches, your staff is already here.", you know the situation has got to be @$^#'ed up. Every team in the NFL has talent. The difference between the Raiders and the Patriots is theri front office. Al Davis is a meddler (sound familiar), and the game has passed him by.

Why would he come?
Can we offer him more money than he is currently making or does he want out of Oakland?

MM and DW are to be lauded as Arkansas sports heroes for their overall contribution, not just on the playing field during one season, but also for the sacrifices that they made which ensured the dismantling of the Frank Broyles machine.

i think Lane Kiffin would be an absolutely great hire.  he's young, has what seem to be great coaching abilities, i would say he's my first choice.  it would be awesome if he pull him in.

MysticHog

Was Kiffin not the OC last year at Oakland?  If he was not then I guess I was wrong. However if you look at the Oakland team this year they are terrible.  Terrible last year, terrible this year. You can see how one would think it was the same OC.  Either way the guy is not that good and we deserve much better.

HOMERLOVIN

Lane Kiffin would be great! Orgeron DC

B-Ross2417

He was the OC at USC last year, then hired at Oakland this year = NO MOSS....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_Kiffin

oldfart

I think Kiffin would be a good hire. We keep talking about getting a "hot shot coach" but when you start looking around, who are they and where are they and how are we going to shake them loose from where they are?  I would not mind getting a young, eager, hardworking young coach who wants to make a name for himself, one who has been a part of a successfull program, who can bring in some vitality and is bringing in a modern offense and a strong defense.  From what we read about kiffin, he can do those...

and for those of you who are not as long in the tooth as some of us on here, Monte Kiffin put together some hellacious defenses at Arkansas (and at Nebraska prior to being here) and is widely recognized as one of if not the best DC in pro football.  I believe he was mostly responsible for development of the Tampa 2 defense that almost everyone in pro football plays now...

The Raiders was a job that Lane Kiffin, at his ripe young age, couldn't refuse.

But the reality is that nobody can take coaching for Al Davis for very long.

Kiffin would be a dream come true for Arkansas, if he's interested.

Al Davis = Frank Broyles?  I think so...luckily Frank is stepping down.  I would love a young coach like Kiffin.

Yeah, and the question is... Why do they keep getting moved?  We have threads on Leach and others, why won't they let one on Kiffin stay on... ESPECIALLY when the story actually has legs to it!

Korvyn

Kiffin is a great coach. While the raiders are dismal this year. they are already at their win total for last year. So it's not like he has taken a good team and made them terrible. In fact they are competing much better than they did last year. He has three mediocre QB's on the team and one rookie. His running backs are terrible but a defence that kicks serious butt. He would be a great hire for the university. Plus this is the offensive mind behind the USC team that was killing everyone. He leaves and they lose more games than they did like the previous 4 years combined.

I don't know WHY they keep moving them!  I freaking heard Joe Schad say that he was interested this morning on ESPN!  That's more credible than anything else on this board today concerning head coaches!!
