wow.  6-6 at Iowa gets you the Michigan job.  Maybe they should really consider Hootie if they're going to do something like this.
I don't know, these numbers look pretty good to me.

At Iowa, Ferentz has an overall record of 55-43, including a 51-24 mark over the last six seasons. He has posted a 34-30 record in Big Ten play. He has a career record of 67-63 in 11 years as a collegiate head coach. His Iowa contract carries through the 2012 season. Ferentz is one of just seven Big Ten coaches ever to guide a team to 10 wins or more in three straight seasons.

Prior to last season the Hawkeyes, under Ferentz, had put together the greatest run in school history. Iowa had a 7-5 record in 2005 and a 10-2 mark in 2004. Add that to 10-3 in 2003 and 11-2 in 2002 and you have the best four-year run in Iowa history (38-12). And, Iowa's 25 Big Ten wins were the most ever by a Hawkeye team in a four year span. No other Big Ten team won more league games in that four-year span.

Mixed emotions. As long as Pellini goes to Nebraska I have no problem with Les coming back. Most LSU fans want Pellini out of town fast. It was reported this morning that Nebraska has contacted Pellini.

Lots of information coming fast and furious.

I thought about two thirds of the state would be slitting their throats over that decision.
They interviewed several fans on last nights broadcast and seemed to me folks are about ready for him to leave.

I had the privilege of talking to one of Iowa's assistant coaches a couple of years ago. He came right out and asked me what in the world Nutt's problem was. This was just a year or two after Nutt pulled Herb Grigsby's scholarship offer and Grigsby signed with the Hawkeyes. Also keep in mind that there is another player or two from Arkansas on Iowa's roster.

I suspect they've heard all about Nutt.

Again:
Losing to Western Michigan in your 8th year?  Unacceptable
Losing back to back games against Indiana?  Unacceptable--- how would you feel if we were Croomed the last two years?
Losing 2 of 3 to Iowa State and Northwestern?  Unacceptable-- how would you feel if we lost 2 of 3 to Ole Piss and Vandy?

Some national sports magazine-I forget which-rated Ferentz 2 years ago as the best coach in the Big 10.  Iowa has had a couple down years I think, but I remember them going something like 11-1 and beating LSU in a bowl game 3 years ago.  I believe it was Saban's last game.  If indeed Michigan is hiring him, I think that's a good move.  Also, why in the world would they want Miles?  LSU hasn't played up to par all year.  They have all these athletes and they seem to struggle every week.  No way Kentucky should have beaten them.  No way we should beat them at LSU.  If LSU still has Miles, then that's good for the Hogs, right?

That is very true and all, but I think Michigan was looking at the aspect that Kirk could get the job done when he has the talent.  He obviously showed that in the 3 year span.

Again--- the man lost to Western Michigan  in his -8th season- as HC, his last 2 against Indiana,  2 of 3 to both Northwestern and Iowa State, and both of his last two lower tier bowls.

Iowa is a poster child for underachievement since 2005.

He is the Houston Nutt of the Big 10.

Agreed.  He is in fact worse than Nutt in my opinion.  He's one of the highest paid football coaches yet the best he has done is gotten blown out by USC in the Orange Bowl.  He's really one of the most overrated coaches out there.  They always start out highly ranked, yet they fall apart during the season.  I'm surprised he hasn't been fired yet.

And a *lot* more expensive.

$2,840,000 in base compensation for Ferentz.
$1,049,644 in base compensation for Nutt.

Neither worth half their pay.

This is the superficial view-you look at a coach's 1-2 years of a down season or rebuilding at a school like Iowa then say he "sucks".

Michigan has faced Ferentz coached teams for quite a few years and wants to hire him-you think they dont know what kind of coach he is ? that you know more about him ? ridiculous.

Youve got to be a hugger or an idiot to claim Nutt is a better coach than Ferentz. lol

Chris Landry (Fox Sports) is reporting...   Reply
that Ferentz is Michigan's top choice, hands down.

He said that Michigan's wish list is 1) Ferentz, 2) Brian Kelly, and 3) Les Miles is the fall back choice but will take the position if offered.

He went on to say that in coaching circles Ferentz is considered a top 5 coach and basically Miles isn't even close the the coach KF is.

Landry is in the know and has many good sources. At first, I thought this whole rumor about KF was little more than internet jibber jabber, but it seems like it is getting a lot more serious than that. Landry also said that if Michigan officially offered the job to KF, that didn't mean he would take it.

Landry went on to state that if you polled 500 football people(coaches) that all 500 would place Ferentz above Miles as a coach.

Now who is the @ss clown claiming HDN is a better coach than Ferentz ?  :D

Tammany, thanks for bringing the info to the board. And, thanks for being good natured about the ribbing. :)

I didn't like Miles when he was at Okie State...but sure appreciated his ability to beat OU. He is doing fine at LSU and will continue to keep them near the top of the heap.

Hate to break it to you, but they are the same coach:  both succeeded by making their programs generally stop losing to the lower tier of their conferences;  witness Nutt v. OP,  Nutt v. MSU, Ferentz v. Minnesota, Ferentz v Purdue early.

Career records?  Nutt is actually better than Ferentz.   (110-71 vs. 73-70)    Records at their current schools?  Nutt again-  (75-50 vs 61-50)

He has beaten Ohio State once, and Michigan twice in 11 total attempts.  He's never won an outright Big Ten title;  he is *3-5* against Iowa State, and has single handedly accounted for more losses against their rival than happened in the 20 year reign of Hayden Fry.

Ferentz was very highly regarded a few years ago and he had numerous NFL "feelers".  I believe he turned down the Jaguars when they fired Coughlin and parlayed that into a big raise at Iowa.  I totally agree with ErieHog though as they have under achieved the last 3 years.  If Ferentz has a chance to leave for another lateral job let alone a "bigger" job he probably should before the Iowa folks call for his head.

Fox sports radio (national) this morning was talking about how Miles was he third choice, taht Kirk would be first option, and the guy at Cinci would be second, and that Les was the fall back as they KNEW that Miles would take it.

The main talk guy was sort of blindsided by it as he had been talking Miles moving to Michigan and then the expert came by with that.

Sort of surprised me too.

I'm hoping we can get Brian Kelley of Cincinnatti for ourselves.   That guy can coach 'em up, in any system, and always makes whatever talent he inherits on hand work well as a team.   They don't make coaches much better.

remember Nutt does stupid things like this every few years and wins a game he shouldn't and always loses more than he should.  Obviously below mediocrity IMO

carlyle513

Prior to last season the Hawkeyes, under Ferentz, had put together the greatest run in school history. Iowa had a 7-5 record in 2005 and a 10-2 mark in 2004. Add that to 10-3 in 2003 and 11-2 in 2002 and you have the best four-year run in Iowa history (38-12). And, Iowa's 25 Big Ten wins were the most ever by a Hawkeye team in a four year span. No other Big Ten team won more league games in that four-year span.

The two-time Big Ten Coach of the Year led the Hawkeyes to a third place Big Ten finish in 2005. An overtime loss to Michigan and a last-minute, one point loss at Northwestern is all that kept the Hawkeyes out of contention for a third Big Ten title in four years. Following the 2005 season Iowa was one of four teams (Southern Cal, Georgia, Florida State) in the nation to play in four consecutive January bowl games.

Iowa won a Kinnick Stadium record 22 straight home games before an overtime loss to Michigan in 2005. The home streak was the fourth longest in the nation. Iowa has won 30 of its last 33 games in Kinnick. The Hawkeyes sold out their entire home schedule the past three years and have strung together 24 straight home sellouts. The 70,585 average for six home games in 2005 and seven games in 2006 is an Iowa record for average home attendance.

Ferentz led the 2004 Hawkeyes to their second Big Ten title in three years and won the league's Coach of the Year honors for the second time.
Iowa's 10-2 (7-1 in the Big Ten) record was expected by very few. After opening conference play with a loss at Michigan, Iowa won its final seven regular season games to earn the title share.

The Hawkeyes capped the season with their eighth straight victory, earning a 30-25 win over defending national champion LSU. Iowa scored on a 56-yard pass play on the final play of the Capital One Bowl in probably the most exciting, and dramatic, win in Iowa history. Seven of Iowa's 12 opponents were ranked at some point during the season as Iowa earned a third straight appearance in a January bowl game.

In addition to Ferentz being named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2004, the Hawkeyes finished eighth in the final polls and five Hawkeyes were named first team all-Big Ten.

Lightly regarded by the so-called "experts" heading into the 2003 season, the Hawkeyes fooled prognosticators by rising into the nation's top 10 four times during the year, getting as high as eighth in the season-ending poll. Iowa put the topping on the 2003 season by beating a favored Florida team (37-17) in the Outback Bowl, in Tampa, FL, on New Year's Day.

The 2003 Hawkeyes were the only Big Ten team to beat league champion Michigan (30-27). And, five Iowa players were named to the 2003 first all-Big Ten team and two were named first team all-America. Hawkeye offensive lineman Robert Gallery was named winner of the 2003 Outland Trophy, which goes to the nation's top collegiate interior lineman.

The 2002 team was probably the most decorated in Iowa football history.

Kirk was named 2002 Associated Press and The Walter Camp Football Foundation's Coach of the Year in college football. He was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year in a season that saw his team climb as high as third in the national rankings.

Ferentz led the 2002 Iowa football team to its first Big Ten title since 1990 and the most wins (11) in school history. The Hawkeyes also played in the BCS's FedEx Orange Bowl for the first time.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."
