He is not some unknown.
OC of the year
OC of the week at least twice this year
His book
on and on and on.

You saying no one but us knows him doesn't make it so.

What lost us that game was that freaking punt on 4th and forever when Fish muffed the punt, after that the big MO changed.  I still can't believe that play...
I agree with that one and I don't blame Fish, but Shibest/Nutt for it.

Patterson? Rice's coach. is that really a good upgrade?

I had no idea that Patterson left TCU for Rice.....whoodathunkit

And whats the difference is he was Rice's coach and Tulsa's OC?

Just asking the question...

He has more contacts than you think.  He has been thinking about this opportunity (somewhere...not necessarily here) for some time.  He has some names in mind that are very experienced and very credible.

like?

There's NOTHING to dislike about him.  A totally class act after everything
done to him by hooten and his associated slimeballs...he never once spoke
out against the injustices and humiliations.

He's only made Tulsa one of the most productive offenses in the country
in his first year.

Ask yourself this:  Would you want him on the opposite sidelines?  Hello??

Head coaches all over the country are admitting to using Gus's playbook. College Coaches take notice when a 1st year coach is Coordinator of the Year. College coaches realize he had 2 returning Starters, and is Leading the Country in Offense!

The wildcat is showing up more and more in the NFL as well.

The recruiting rankings guarantee success about as well as getting Lee Corso to choose your team as the winner.

Along with the Dallas Cowboys (see: no huddle), and BTW did anyone else see
Southern Cal use Gus' wildcat last night for a TD?

He didn't.  I think there's some confusion, there.  Patterson is still at TCU.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

We can think of all kinds of things we dislike about him.

Every SEC coach who would have to face him.

I am not seeing much to dislike about GUS!

It's not a dislike, but he simply hasn't done enough at the major college level to be given the reigns to a program in the best conference in the country. No major program in a major conference would dare make such a hire. Lets be honest, if you are in a position to hire, and millions of dollars a year are at stake, would you go for the applicant who has a high school diploma over the applicant that has his college degree?

What if the choices are Pelini, Venables, Strong, Mullen, Leach or Gus?
I'd probably take Mullen or Strong out of those prospects. Gus just isn't qualified yet. He would be peter principled like Nutt was, only I do believe Gus would learn and eventually get it right if allowed the time. Gus needs to work for more D1 coaches and make some connections. Hell, he ain't been in the business long enough to know very many qualified assistants. How many great assistants are going to come and work for HC with two years college experience? I think Gus is great, and will be a fine HC one day, he is just not qualified at this time in my opinion.

If he was to be hired, he would have 100% of my support.

Would really like to hear from those who don't like GUS?

Ex-Trumpet

After skimming through several posts, people seem to think that Gus is a good OC, intelligent, moral guy.  The topic, I believe is "What do You Dislike About Gus?" and I can find nothing!  Huggers ought to be all over this, but they're not.

The closest I've seen to "dislike" is his lack of head-coaching experience.  But, many coaches on our radar also lack head-coaching experience; they just happen to be on staff of winning programs.  I'm curious and wonder what Gus would do as OC at, say, LSU or Texas...I hope I never find out!

I think Gus would be a great choice for the Hogs; we could do much worse--heck, we have much worse now!  Let's face it; NOBODY will look very good next year!  Urban Meyer wouldn't win here next year!  Nutt has left the cabinet pretty bare; those he did land transferred elsewhere.  Not too many schools will be successful missing an entire recruiting class.

I'd love to see Gus hired here, get a couple years of hard knocks, recruit his own players and then look out!  We'd win a NC by 2012--maybe sooner!!

Even huggers would have to like that!

TwinDeltaTandem

I like him. I question the whole "he doesn't have the experience" logic--if he's the brilliant and gifted coach he appears to be then he has enough experience.

What hurts Gus is the fact that he's been at the center of this entire nightmare. People are going to want a clean break and a return to normalcy. They're sick of the controversy and division, and want someone who can unite everyone, nut-huggers and darksiders alike. Gus can't do that.

Not that I agree with it--in fact, I think it's shortsighted. But the reality is we're not getting JJ or anyone near that level. Gus very well might be, in reality, at that level but we won't get him because of the pile of @#$% created by Nuttcase. So we're probably screwed.
