Ok, the NCAA has passed a rule allowing 10 assistant coaches but today Trey mentioned that he has listed on his site 31?? names for coaches, analysts, quality control, strength and other staff. He believes that we will add a couple more analysts for the defensive side of the ball.

His biggest question is that 10th guy and the Special Teams coach. He mentioned several possibilities for an assistant filling a position role and special teams. He also said that the special teams could go to one of the analysts.

How exactly would that work? I thought that the rule says 10 assistant coaches actually coaching on the field. Is that just during games or does that include practice time? Is the analyst/QC role just a way to dodge the rules? Is it just a way to get more guys on the field during practice working with more players individually?

Most importantly, is it a violation of NCAA rules?

The scout team (snout team) is an important part of the team although it gets little credit.

I think you can have 2 off the field coaches on the field.  That might be limited to GAs though.  I think Tanner Burns coached ST last year and was on the field.

I'm sure there is some limitation but Kiero Small, Herb, and Tanner Burns were on the field during games.  I'm sure others were too.

Last year Coach Burns was our specialist/ST coach as a GA. I don't claim to know the answer but some of the 10 coaches number has to do with recruiting.

11.7.2.1 Exceptions to Number Limits FBS - No individual other than coaches designated to fill the coaching categories set forth in Bylaw 11.7.2 may participate in any manner in the coaching of the intercollegiate team of a member institution during any football game, practice or other organized activity, with the following exceptions:

11.7.2.1.1 Weight or Strength Coach FBS - A weight (strength and conditioning) coach may conduct flexibility, warm-up and physical conditioning activities prior to any game and prior to or during any practice or other organized activities without being included in the limitations on number of coaches.

11.7.2.1.2 Undergraduate Coach FBS - The limits on the number of coaches in this section do not apply to undergraduate coaches.

It appears from this section that only GA's can assist in on-field coaching activities, even in practice. No team can have more than 4 GA's and they are the only "extras" supposedly allowed to coach during practice.

for me it going  to be interesting to see who the coaches for defensive line Cole, Wyatt or Caldwell

Tanner Burns was not a GA.  He was Quality Control Special Teams for CBB for 4 years.  He was on sidelines during games.  He's only 29 and will be a great coach. Glad CCM kept him.

If you recall, there was a controversy (imagine that!) during the Nutt reign of error after his idiot brother was replaced as RB coach by Tim Horton. Danny Nutt was shown on ESPN during a game wearing headsets up in the booth. I believe the other team complained or it was brought up in the media after the game as a violation. There are only so many who can be involved.
An Old OL coach who's team couldn't block a hat last season... If things aren't MUCH better this fall,  enjoy Hot Springs Sammy!

The analyst are not allowed to do any coaching in games or practice.  They wear a designated colored hat at all times in practice to distinguish themselves from coaches.  Their value is in film breakdown, being assistants to the assistant coaches, or whatever grunt work they may be assigned.  Usually treated as a step above the GAs.
