MJ got his ankles broken in 1000 pieces when iverson crossed his ass up.

Im just saying, Lebron is scoring just as much in the playoffs and takes less shots. He defends better if you ask me overall. He's also playing against better competition any way you slice it. Today's athletes make those of yesteryear look like high school.

Wait the best comeback you got is get beat one cross over? Jordan is one the best one on one defenders I have ever seen.

I'm not a big fan of either one of them, but--  it is closer than people like to acknowledge.

Jordan's decisive edges are as a scorer, leader, and winner.

LeBron's edges are pretty well everything else.

I agree with all of that.

By saying you are "not a big fan of either of them" are you suggesting that neither is the GOAT, or, simply, that despite their greatness, they are just not your favorite players?

Definitely the later, probably the former, but cross-era comparisons once you get pre-1970 get much harder.

I watched both play and I would take Lebron James because of his all around type of play.  He also has the ability to take a team on his shoulders and win like Mike had done in his days.

Jordan. The Bad Boy era Pistons or Riley coached Knick teams would have killed Lebron. He falls out when barely touched and had to be carried out of a game because the air conditioning wasn't working.

The Eastern Conference that LeBron has glided through is nothing compared to the gauntlet Jordan had to survive with the Celtics, Pistons, and Knicks.

Jordan.  I will probably get blasted for this but there have been a lot of good to great athletic 2guard/3wings in the league past to present.  Dr. j, the IceMan George Gervin, Clyde Drexeler, Dominque Wilkins, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady. The list could keep going so it's not like Jordan was a physical freak like Lebron, Shaq or Wilt.  But Jordan had a drive like hardly anyone else.  He could get into an opponents head and mess with him.

One on one Jordan wins. Lebron doesn't have that competiveness that Jordan, Bird, Magic or Kobe had.  He hates to lose and wants to win but those others are at another level.

Not to mention Jordan played in an unmatched Big Man Era. Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, and Shaquille in their prime. Played against Kareem as well

MJ without a doubt.  6 for 6 in Finals with 6 MVPs.  Better scorer and people forget MJ was 9 time defensive 1st team, and also DPOY in '88.   10 time scoring champ and 3 time steals leader.  The most clutch player ever to play the game.

One other thing MJ lifted the play of everyone on his teams. As far as the Gervin fan above MJ was double and triple teamed all the time and still scored in those situations, he was truly unstoppable.

Neither.

George Gervin.

Gervin could not be defended by an opposing defender.

Jordan and James can be defended by an opposing defender.

Except I don't recall Gervin ever playing defense................................

Give me Lebron. All around better player. Jordan had Pippen to guard the teams best player. Lebron has never had a Pippen. The Bulls was just as good when Jordan left the first time. Lebron teams became one of the worst in the league after he left. Lebron took the Sasha Pavlovic All-Stars to the NBA finals. Jordan never made it out the first round without Pippen. I could go on and on.

Jordan never had a team as stacked as Lebron has had.  MJ had Pippen who is a HOF player, and then the rest were role players, he never had a 3-headed monster like he had in Miami with role players and the same in Cleveland.  Granted, Rodman was a great defensive player and rebounding machine, but couldn't score a lick.  And who was that who said that when MJ retired that the Bulls were just as good as they were?  ROFLMAO!!!  That has to be nominated as the dumbest post of the year.  They were still a good team, but no where near the team they were without MJ, they didn't win the title now did they.

Neither one. This is a board for Razorback basketball. Neither one of these guys ever stepped on campus to play basketball for the Hogs. Only one of them ever came to Arkansas to play basketball and he lost that game.

pretty much this right here.

MJ was a better all around shooter, scorer, and defender, was more clutch, and a far better FT shooter

yet I still think James is probably (or at least will be) the 2nd greatest player of all time behind MJ.

Lebron is a physical freak, the speed and dexterity at that size is amazing but he quit during Celtics playoff and deferred in the mavericks series. MJ sheer will to win hands down makes him the best ever. I think the real debate is LBJ or Kobe as #2. I am a fan of all 3 so no agenda here just my opinion.

No it doesn't.  Why would you say that?

Watch far enough into the video.

The thing about Gervin is that he was a 6'8" Guard with very long arms.  His shot basically could not be blocked, especially when he would just flick the ball up high.  He also had a devastating finger roll.

We may never ever see another basketball player with the offensive arsenal/repertoire of Gervin.

MJ. He had the killer instinct. He'd knock out his mom to win. Lebron doesn't have it and never will. Kobe had it. Bird had it. Magic had it. Lebron is all body and no heart.

And at what point in Michael's career was that said?

Because Magic says similar things about Jordan:

Wrong on all 3 of those first notes.

Lebron can literally guard anyone. MJ couldn't. Lebron is playing in an age of where even the bench players are stupid good. Saying he played against better players is a farce.
There is no way LJ handles the ball better than MJ did..not even close. MJ was an incredible defender. Bench players may be incredible athletes these days but you win championships in the NBA with superstars. The East these days is terrible and has beenÖ.. Cakewalk to finals every year. Jordan won championships vs. Ewing, Bird, McHale, Barkley, Hakeem, Magic, and maybe Shaq. That's a who's who of NBA history. He played against better players is a fact

Gervin played with the 3 point line his ENTIRE pro basketball career.  He was very 1 dimensional and in the conference finals one year the Bullets switched Bobby Dandridge to the backcourt on defense to cover Gervin after he had burned them in previous games and Dandridge shut him down.  I am a big Gervin fan but he has no place in the GOAT discussion.  Does anybody know where Gervin went to college??

Don't try to draw silly false equivalences.

Jordan has a small edge, but it grows smaller by the year.   The main problem is that James shows few signs of slowing down, or of falling out of championship level contention in the next few years.

1) IIRC, Gervin's first 3 NBA seasons were without the 3-point line. NBA didn't begin using 3-point line until the 79-80 season. Spurs joined the NBA for the 76-77 season.
2) Eastern Michigan University

sorry I forgot about during the changeover years.  3 point shots were around  since 1961 and even tried in a college game in 1945.   The reason I asked about Gervins college was that he was actually at Long Beach State for a short time under the Shark.  Sharks plan was to have Gervin and LAs best guard ever Raymond Lewis in the same backcourt.  According to Shark   Lewis got more money and better car from something then  called Cal St LA.  Gervin was kicked out of college when he got into a fight during a tournament game.

I still have MJ edging out LeBron, but James continues to add to his legacy.

Give me who you think is better and why.

I would prefer to avoid arguments based on (1) you are old and cranky and threatened by anyone ever surpassing MJ, or (2) you are young and ignorant and have no idea how good MJ really was.

Erie, I want your thoughts.
Age old argument.  Who is better?  Goes to any sport.

But you canít do a one on one comparison.  The modern athlete will always be better.  They have better conditions.

The best player in any sport is the player who dominated the game the most while playing.  To me, thatís simple.  Itís neither of these two.

Who scored 100 points in a game?  Who averaged 50 points a game?  Who, and this is the biggest part, was responsible for some of the games rules to be changed because of his domination?

Thereís only one player.

You can't be the most dominate player and only win 2 championships.  While another center from your era won 11.  Stats are part of the equation but winning also has to be considered.

You used the word dominate. Who dominated: the center that averaged 50 pts or the center with 11 championships?

The fact that MJ and Lebron have the stats and the championships is what set them apart.
