That's perceived depth, but I question it considering the recruiting class rankings.

Nobody is surprised that you question anything. What was the class rank when we got Agim? Brandon Allen? Austin Allen? Alex Collins? Rawleigh williams? Devwah Whaley? Ryan Mallet? Knile Davis? Joe Adams? Greg Childs? About the same as our current class rankings I would assume but that was some quality talent.

Considering his outlook, I'm surprised he hasn't tried to catch a bullet with his teeth.

Only a few of those guys were on the roster when we had measurable success. I think the goal is consistent success. The schools that accomplish that bring in higher ranked classes.

hmmm. You listed 10 players that span about 10 years. No one can question the talent of the players you listed. It kind of makes the point about depth though,  which was actually what was commented about, not having a few good players.

It might be more accurate if recruiting classes were ranked after 3 years on campus.

Would agree. However, you can look at the schools that recruit well and who is competing for Natty's and you will see they are one in the same.

Well of course we are going to look like we aren't competing if you compare us against the schools that are competing for NC's. And as far as getting to that level (the more you win the better your recruiting seems to get), in our Division alone that road goes through Alabama (#1.8 avg rank 2010-14), LSU (#7.6), Auburn (#7.6) and A&M (#16.6). I think everyone would have a better justification for complaining if we had LSU's recruiting classes over the period of time mentioned and yet from 2013-2016 hadn't cracked the Western Div Championship and made it into the final four.

We could go into a litany of reasons why it is more difficult for Arkansas to recruit and we have in the past, everyone knows the situation. Yes, we need to win more than 7-8 games at this point but you actually brought up NC's? Come on man, that isn't even a realistic expectation.

yeah, but isn't it fun to see the guys that "have a feeling" the hogs are going undefeated and win the natty when the prediction thread starts. Thee are a few every year.

Ok, I don't agree but I'll let this one go because I can't see into the future.  If the SEC has another crappy bowl season, can we agree, after 2 years in a row of crappy bowl seasons, at least for the last two seasons the SEC appears to be a little down?
anyone that doesn't admit the sec is down is lying to themselves.

so is this the reasoning most hog fans use?  He's the best you an get?
it is a consideration...I happen to think he was the best at the time & probably still is the best coach we can get given the inherent drawbacks of the program. Who do you think would come to Fayetteville & do a better job?  It's a simple question.

The ACC was a better than the SEC last season, I don't think their is much of an argument there. But that is only one season. The SEC has been the top conference 9 of the last ten years.

The high water mark for the SEC West was in 2010-2011.

I agree, the high water mark for the SEC West was indeed in 2010-2011. The SEC West has been down some the last 5 years and a big part of the reason for that is the Arkansas Football Program has never recovered from what happened in April of 2012.

During the 2014 season, the SEC-W had 4 teams in the top 10 - 5 teams in the Top 20 - and 6 teams in the Top 25, for most of the season.

Yeah, that's almost as good as the year the SEC West had 3 teams finish in the top 5 nationally.

In the SEC West???

Yep.

And if anybody still thinks the SEC-W hasn't got tougher, here's something else to think about.

From 2008-2012 we faced other West teams that produced a total of 88 NFL draft picks.

2013-2017 that number grew to 135.

But in the year you're claiming was the toughest, Ark. only played 2 teams from the West that finished in the Top 25.

In 2014, CBB had to play 5.

....And both of those teams played for the National Championship. It was the last year that the SEC West had 3 teams finish in the top 5 nationally. That's 3 teams out of 6 (A&M hadn't joined yet). They haven't come close since.

And then came the play offs and I suspect that you will never see 3 SEC teams in the top 4, let alone the top 5 of the play off rankings again. They just aren't going to allow that to happen even if the 4 best teams in the entire country happen to reside in the SEC.

The way the sec has been the last couple of years they won't have to worry about more than 1 sec team getting in.  It has been pretty much Alabama and then everyone else.

Nothing is static in nature, it will swing back the other way and we will probably find a time that everyone is complaining that 3 SEC teams actually belong in the top 4 of the play offs, but won't get in because of the play off committee and the rules governing the selection process.

Because the overall level of competition was less within the division. Arkansas only had to finish above 1 team with a winning record (8-5 AU) to finish 3rd in the West. We weren't competitive against the top 2, MS St. was 6-6 and Ole Miss was 2-10. No wins over ANY West team that finished ranked.

Since CBB has been here, a 7th team has been added, the west had 5 teams finish in the CFP top 25. Two out of 4 years, all 7 teams finished with winning records. The number of opponent's NFL draft picks has grown from 88 to 135.

It's a whole lot tougher now.
