  • I JUST posted a thread offering restaurant suggestions.  As far as hotels go...I'm not too sure.  Hampton Inn hotels are probably the best quality for the money.  Their rooms go for around 100 a night.  But it really depends on how much money you want to spend.

BTW...did you go to Morrilton HS?

  • When did you graduate?  My dad went to High School and graduated from there?  We still go back to visit my grandma who lives in Atkins every winter.  What are you doing near South Carolina?

Did you find my thread about food places? oh and I just noticed you wrote Columbus in the header.  Did you mean Columbia?  I was assuming you meant Columbia since that's where the game will be played.

My family and I are making the trip over. We're having a fantastic sports weekend. Getting to see my sisters play for Ohio st bball team in the carrier classic and then the football game. It's my little bro's first away game so he's pretty stoked. Just hope the team comes to play for 4 quarters, I know that's a lot to ask these days.

With it being so late everything downtown is probably booked.  Try the Irmo/Harbison area.   Anything on Harbison Blvd, Lake Murray Blvd, or Columbiana Avenue would be good.

Stay away from the Two Notch Road area.

Is there a particular restaurant in 5 points that is beyond awesome?

    Thanks

  • #9765 by popcornhog on 10 Nov 2012
  • Thanks for the info. We ended up going to Baan Sawan, I hadn't seen your responses before we went. It was very good.

I'd been told that five points might be too young of a crowd, but it's my first time in Columbia and I was 25 three years ago! Haha

We just got back to the hotel though, I guess I am old!

  • ESPN presents the SEC fan guide to Starkville

    Quote
Matt and Stefanie in Starkville write: Tucked away between a bridge and the fire station on University Drive is a dilapidated building next to an empty gas station. From the outside, the place looks abandoned like in an episode of Scooby-Doo with its outdoor dining area consisting of lawn chairs. Beneath the shabby exterior, however, is the vibrant and, might I mention, always packed Stromboli's of Starkville, Mississippi. Stromboli's is considered the go-to pizza place of Starkvegas.

  • Do any of the Fayetteville natives have any feeling for what Thanksgiving night will be like around the city?  Mainly, will any restaurants/bars be open?  Surely Dickson will have at least some things open, right?

I believe I read that Powerhouse will be opening at 5:00 Thanksgiving day.

I'll be driving in on Thursday and I'm thinking that since I'm missing Tday w/ the family this year someplace that is open would help!

    TIA

  • This Hog fan and FHS Bulldog parent will most likely be in North Little Rock watching Fayetteville play NLR is the 7A state semis.  That is assuming NLR beats Cabot and FHS beats Conway this Friday.  I finally get LSU on campus and I am the one that's going to be in Little Rock.  This is the one year I wish LSU was in War Memorial!! That is the definition of irony.

  • I've done some calling around, and here is what I've been able to come up with.  I really only polled places on Dickson, so if you're not staying in that vicinity then this might not apply.

    Open:
    Powerhouse - opens @ 5
    Grub's - opens @ 5
    Jose's - opens @ 5
    Ella's - open 5-7:30 - Serving a thanksgiving buffet
    Bordino's - open from 6 until midnight

    Closed:
    Farrells
    21st Amendment
    US Pizza
    Hugo's
    Doe's

Most bars aren't open yet, so I don't have a real good feel for what those are looking like.  However, the owner of 21st Amendment said that the only thing he's ever seen open on Thanksgiving (bar-wise) was a Kareoke bar called You-know Uno.

  • I will be in Fayetteville thanksgiving night. I have lived here almost eleven years and this will be a new experience with a football game the day after thanksgiving. Yes, it will probably be a good idea to go out on dickson street thanksgiving night for a different environment than what people have been used to.

I will be shocked out of my socks if they sell out and fill the place up.

Been there once. Don't remember the route we took. We ate at Ryans. I left unimpressed. We won the game though, clinching the SEC-W division title.

It depends on what part of Arkansas you are coming from.  If you're around or anywhere north of LR, take I-40 to Memphis, get on Hwy 78 and go to Tupelo, then south on 45 (I think) all the way to Starkville.  4 lane all the way; a little construction near Holly Springs, MS, but it usually doesn't hold you up.

As for restaurants, there are a couple of good locally owned eateries not far from campus that I'll try to get the name of from my daughter (she's a student at MSU).  Other than that, it's the Ryan's/Appleby's/Chili's type restaurants and that's all.

There is an entire thread about this that is worth checking out. We're doing Fred's Hickory Inn. Ella's is also serving thanksgiving dinner/lunch as is AQ and possibly Theo's.

James at the Mill said they were going to consider it. Not sure if that ended up panning out or not.

Check the thread, there may be a few more suggestions there.
