John Talty: A few SEC schools make big money off their basketball programs

Here is where each school ranks on revenue based on its U.S. Department of Education athletics filings through June 2015

QuoteNo. 14 Mississippi State: $6.32 million
State, which also finished 13th in football revenue

No. 13 Ole Miss: $7.90 million
Ole Miss made a tidy profit of $1.83 million during this time frame off basketball. The school likely benefited from an NCAA Tournament appearance. [Opened a new arena since then.]

No. 12 LSU: $7.99 million
While LSU has a few of the SEC's most prestigious alumni like Pete Maravich and Shaquille O'Neal, the program has made the NCAA Tournament only twice in the last decade.

No. 3 Arkansas: $16.31 million
Arkansas, one of only three SEC programs with a national title, ... had the second-best profit in SEC at $7.89 million.

No. 2 Tennessee: $16.92 million
Volunteers had the best profit margin in the SEC.

No. 1 Kentucky: $24.68 million
It should be no surprise that Kentucky landed at No. 1 in the SEC. What is interesting is that the school spent more on basketball expenses ($20 million) than it did on football ($19 million).
