Late Friday afternoon provided your weekend conversation-starter. Out of nowhere, came the bombshell, first reported by Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports, that a new book makes allegations that a former Louisville assistant basketball coach paid for escorts to have sex with basketball recruits. In fact, U of L has been conducting an internal investigation into those allegations.

QuoteThe book, "Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen," is being published by IBJ Book Publishing of Indianapolis. The book is written by Louisville resident Katina Powell – a self-described madam who allegedly provided girls to the Louisville team – and Indianapolis-based journalist Dick Cady. Powell alleges that former graduate assistant and director of operations Andre McGee paid her thousands of dollars over a four-year period to provide women to dance for and have sex with Cardinals basketball players – often in the players' on-campus dorm.

This isn't the first time that a sex scandal has been linked to Louisville basketball. Head coach Rick Pitino had his own personal and infamous sex scandal not that long ago.

So not only is Louisville embroiled in a sex scandal involving hookers & recruits, but they're blaming it on Indiana?

Louisville has been paying Chuck Smrt since early September for what could be a very costly investigation http://cjky.it/1OmSI4k

QuoteJurich said he had hired former NCAA enforcement staffer Chuck Smrt, who runs The Compliance Group, to investigate Powell's claims for U of L.

U of L is paying Smrt $235 an hour for his time, and, if other employees from The Compliance Group are involved, they will receive $200 an hour, according to the university's contract with TCG that was obtained through an open records request by The Courier-Journal. In addition to billable hours, transcript and report preparation and research services will be billed at $95 per hour, the contract says.

"The first response we have is to get a hold of the NCAA and let them know what's going on -- and hire Chuck Smrt," Jurich said Friday. "He's probably the No. 1 person in the country that does this kind of thing. We want to know the facts. We are trying to do the due diligence that we can with the limited information we have."

The agreement was effective Sept. 1, the day after the book's coauthor, Dick Cady, said he met with U of L officials. It was signed a week later by Kevin Miller, U of L's executive senior associate athletic director for internal operations. Smrt signed the contract on Sept. 11.

The funding for Smrt's investigation will come out of the basketball program's budget...

Each of the players and recruits attended different parties at Billy Minardi Hall, where dancers, many of whom stripped naked, were present. All five of the ex-players or recruits spoke with Outside the Lines on the condition of anonymity, citing a fear of retribution from Louisville fans, players and coaches.

A University of Louisville student has sued Katina Powell and IBJ Book Publishing - http://cjky.it/1Krry4S  (h/t @Res4Six)

QuoteUniversity of Louisville student has sued escort Katina Powell and her publisher, sayingher book, "Breaking Cardinal Rules," tarnishes the university and reduces the value of her education.

Louisville lawyer Nader George Shunnarah, who is asking that the suit be designated a class action on behalf of all U of L students, could not be reached for comment. But he told an online news site that "the goal here is to benefit students instead of the prostitute."

The suit asks that all profits from the book be placed with a receiver in the Jefferson Circuit Court clerk's office.

But Jon Fleischaker, a leading First Amendment attorney, said the suit, filed Thursday in Jefferson Circuit Court, is meritless and raises serious constitutional questions.

"Whatever you think of Katina Powell, she has a First Amendment right to write about whatever she wants and it appears that at least some of what she wrote is true," said Fleischaker, who represents the Kentucky Press Association and The Courier-Journal.

"This is a silly lawsuit," Fleischaker said.

The complaint was filed on behalf of Kyle Nicole Hornback, who said in an email that she is 19 and a sophomore.

It asks a judge to order all profits from "Breaking Cardinal Rules" placed with a receiver in the Jefferson Circuit Court clerk's office and ultimately given to U of L students.

QuoteWhen it comes to Rick Pitino's lack of knowledge of the sex scandal accusations about the Louisville basketball program, most fans call B.S.

Many players say the same. I believe Pitino because I think a certain part of him has checked out.

But that aside, Pitino is an amazing coach, and he is a well-regarded speaker and author with a focus on leadership.

His practice plans are meticulous. Just like his suits and ties. He wears a microphone at practice as to make sure he is heard while not having to raise his voice above speaking level. He is a fanatic about fitness, not just for his players, but his own and the staff, who must lose weight and fall within fitness guidelines. Pitino challenges his players and staff to remember scouting reports with no notes...

Here is the thing about Pitino -- he isn't as involved off the floor in players' lives as the PR arm of Louisville would lead you to believe. In fact one coach told me that Pitino typically was gone from the KFC Yum! Center before his team had boarded their bus after the game. Pitino had, in his mind, checked out on his team over the past couple of years, when the light of the TV cameras weren't on him.

I think he did not know. I also think it doesn't actually matter...

It's all about creating a "family atmosphere" for recruits. Louisville has just taken a more well rounded approach where the recruit also gets to be the daddy or have the naughty step parent/sibling they have seen so much of on the interwebz.

Washington Post does extensive report on all of the scandals engulfing University of Louisville http://wapo.st/1NCBDRm

QuoteLOUISVILLE — The University of Louisville placed two high-ranking officials on paid leave this month after local media reported that the FBI was investigating the officials for allegedly misappropriating federal grant money. The news followed a series of recent scandals and embarrassments at the university, including a string of criminal convictions of senior staff for financial crimes dating back to 2008.

But along with the advances and successes, the university remains dogged by public scandal, most recently accusations that a former assistant basketball coach paid a woman thousands of dollars to provide prostitutes to parties attended by players and recruits at an on-campus dormitory for student-athletes. The commonwealth's attorney in Jefferson County has impaneled a grand jury in the matter, and the woman at the center of the allegations, Katina Powell, is cooperating with a parallel NCAA investigation, according to ESPN.

In October, Ramsey apologized for wearing a stereotypical Mexican costume — along with numerous members of university staff — during a Halloween party...

On top of that, the university has been victimized by a series of financial criminals...

CRAWFORD | What was THAT about? Reviewing the Pitino #NewYearsDay news conference http://bit.ly/1OBxelq

QuoteLOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — So, I can imagine what you're asking right now. And I imagine the question goes something like this:

"What the hell was that?"

Rick Pitino had answered about 15 minutes worth of questions about the University of Louisville basketball team's opener with Wake Forest and its prospects for ACC play when the usual "last question" notice was given. And that last question was: "Did you flip off fans after the Kentucky game?"

Pitino more or less said that he did not, maybe. It sounded as if, actually, he might've allowed that he flipped off something else, the air, perhaps, who knows? He didn't stay on the topic long. Because he had other things he wanted to discuss.

As you might assume, the things Pitino said on Friday afternoon were a long time coming. Katina Powell's allegations — that she provided strippers and prostitutes for Louisville players and recruits and was paid by former Louisville director of basketball operations Andre McGee for the services from 2010 to '14 — are only part of Pitino's frustration. On Friday, he expressed qualms with the coverage of those allegations.

CRAWFORD | Katina Powell's attorney, Larry Wilder, responds to some of Rick Pitino's Friday comments http://bit.ly/1mp35tt

QuoteLOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — After University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino spoke at length about the allegations that former Louisville escort Katina Powell has made about the program, her lawyer responded to some of his comments this afternoon.

Pitino said at a meeting with Indianapolis Business Journal publishing before "Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen," was published, representatives of IBJ told two U of L officials, when questioned about her journals, that, "No, no, we wrote it. She can't complete two sentences the right way to write a book."

Pitino was relating what was told to him. Whether the quote is accurate, or to what it exactly referred -- the book or the journals themselves -- isn't known. WDRB couldn't reach officials at IBJ Book Publishing for comment, but Powell's attorney, Larry Wilder, says those statements are inconsistent with anything the publisher ever has expressed about her in the past.

"I find it difficult to believe that anyone at IBJ would have been as hateful and mean-spirited about Ms. Powell as Coach Pitino has stated," Wilder said in a text message exchange. "During my meetings with IBJ staff and ownership they have all been very respectful of her and her family. These gratuitous statements are clearly offered as a distraction to the truth."

It was just the beginning of a 300-word statement from Wilder.

"Unfortunately, tragically, what Ms. Powell said took place at the university took place," he said. "I appreciate Coach Pitino's position. I understand he is hopeful that these things didn't take place. However, the NCAA will render their opinion when they complete their full investigation and I am confident that their opinion will be reflective of the totality of the evidence and the circumstances. Ms. Powell continues to stand by her journals, her statements and the statements of those who have been interviewed by journalists, investigators and other lawyers. I am certain that the fraternity of 'U of L basketball' is as closely knit as any other. If it was not for off-court issues, seems to me Rick Pitino would be in running for Coach of Year. Doing amazing job this year
