Thursday's 6th race at Presque Isle Downs.

A nickel claiming route written for 3yo and up.

8 horses ran.

1 5-year-old. All the rest were 8 years of age or older.

4 9-year-olds, 1 10-year-old, 1 11-year-old.

Won by one of the 9-year-olds.

Glad to see these guys still legging it out at their advanced ages, although the 11-year-old finished last and "lost contact with the field" per the chart footnotes.

at Park Jefferson in South Dakota they used to (at least 30 years ago) had a race written I think for 8 year old and up claimers and guys would point to this race and it even had a higher than average purse I believe.  So anyway guys would train up to this race with some horses that had not run recently.  I think it was a longer race for that track maybe 1 mile and 70.  The problem with some trainers is they did not want to lose a old horse that was good to them via claiming.  They got attached to some old shed horse who had become "part of the family"
