The city definitely is what you describe it.  You better lock up your car when you drive anywhere in Memphis.

Everybody I've ever known that lived in the Memphis area couldn't wait to get out of there.  Moving to anywhere in Arkansas is a significant improvement.

Beal street is fun about once a year.  Go in the summer the strip starts really going about 9.  The music is great.  The atmosphere is fun.  Other than that memphis what it is.

I live in Memphis and love it.  Yea, parts of it are an eye sore and there is plenty of racial strife and crime.  But, there are plenty of great restaurants, shopping, a great airport, the downtown has been revitalized with plenty of great places to live, there is no state income tax, there is a great music scene and history, the casinos are 30 minutes away, there are strong fan bases for at least 5 SEC schools, Auto Zone park is arguably the best triple AAA park in America, the FedEx forum is a great facility although the Grizlies suck, the Cardinals will be in town for two games next week, plenty of hotty Southern Belles, plenty of great private schools, great medical community.

My neighbors here in Bentonville just moved from Memphis.  They found the general level of crime and lawlessness disturbing so they moved to the 'burbs.  (Olive Branch, MS.)  While in Olive Brach, their car was stolen and it was found in Memphis a week later.  According to John Q. Law, the thief had been living out of the car since he stole it and conducting various illegal enterprises from it.

One thing I don't miss about big cities is the crime.  Sure, it's entertaining to watch on the news but I don't want it doing on next to me.

I've lived in numerous cities in the south, and I currently live in Memphis.  I wouldn't say that "anywhere" in Arkansas is an improvement over Memphis, but NWA is definitely the best place I have lived.

Sounds like alot of sour grapes to me!  I left Fayetteville for Memphis and never looked back.  Little Rock has so much crime that HBO had a freaking documentary on gang violence there!  I'm a razorback fan first but a big time Memphis fan too.  Memphis has BBQ yes, but we also have Medtronic, Fed-Ex, Wright Medical, Smith Nephew, Morgan Keegan to name a few!!!!!!  Remember West Memphis is in ARKANSAS!!!!!!!!

Well said...I live in Memphis now, but was raised most of my life in LR and in a way I still consider it home.  But according to recent FBI crime stats, it ranked in the top 5 for violent crime in its size category.

Dude, grow up.  That's not the point...the airport, besides being a base for FedEx, provides plenty of jobs and revenue and the opportunity to travel to various places without having to go through multiple connecting cities.

Born there and proud to say it.  My son was born in Jonesboro, and he has to live with that the rest of his life.  My youngest was born in Johnson at Willow Creek.  Not much of an improvement.  Memphis is uber cool, if you know where to go.

Memphis has superior restaurants to every American city except Chicago, S.F., and NYC.  Beale Street is kinda cool as is AutoZone Park.  However, Memphis is a great place to visit but a terrible place for a family.  The schools are a disaster and crime is outrageous.  So, basically, it's like Little Rock but with better restaurants.

Watch the news there some night.  Last time I was there, they had three shootings and they caught some cop running an escort service.  The news in NWA centers around the mule jumping contest and some new store we have.  (There are occasional stories about the emerging "gang problem" and they make me laugh.)

BTW, the Memphis airport is terrible.  The commercial freight side is top notch but the passenger side is awful.  The flights are few, far between, and expensive.  Not many passenger airlines fly out of there.  There also aren't many non stop flights.  XNA is a far better airport than Memphis.

There's NWA, United, American, Delta, Continental, USAir, Lufthansa.  Can you fly nonstop to Europe from XNA?  No argument about the crime, however.  But as far as raising a family, we are doing just fine.  Is it as good as NWA, probably not, but it's not a s-hole.

Growing up near Memphis in the 50's and very early 60's was a unique and irreplacable experience. It was a great city then, in the truest sense.  Department stores the rival of any city in the country(Goldsmith's, Levy's) ,unforgettable movie palaces(Malco,Crosstowne,Lowe's state, Lowe's Palace,The  Strand) The smell of  the Mr. Peanut store on Main street, Clothes from Julius Lewis.  BBQ from K's, Leonard's ... Katz Drug store...Come on some of you oldsters ...back me up !  It has, of course, as all  the big cities have, been ruined by failed urban policies over the years. But anyone who remembers it , say , pre -1963, remembers it with love and affection. The list of  musical talent that played the Mid -South coliseum in the 60's is astounding. No one who grew up on Memphis BBQ then can do anything except lament that he lives elsewhere now. Magnolias, Central Avenue, Pink Palace, Cardinal farm teams in the summer. The River. My gosh... what a great place it was.

Dallas in the 80's had some of what Memphis had in the 50's, with only a little of the southern charm. But it was just as unique in it's own way. And Texas ,compared to anything, is automatically Oranges and Apples. There is only one place like it. It was like ...have the best of everything, build 'til you run out of steel, and they have the unique cowboy mentality that you can't explain to someone who hasn't lived there. I wouldn't trade being there at that time for anything.   Memphis is just different. There are definite similarities but  I don't agree that they should not be mentioned in the same sentence, whatever you meant by that.  Dallas is not the fun it once was. The two cities were great in their best times. They were different, but great.

Best Ribs in Memphis are not on Beale, nor downtown for that matter.  The BBQ Shop on Madison in Midtown takes that trophy.  IMO.  Blues City has some mean tamales though.  I worked at Alfred's just down the street, and we always ended up @ Blues City after work.  Good music and reasonable drinks.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for...if you want to sit on yor porch all day and breath the fresh air, and leave your doors unlocked at night NWA is the place to be. If you want to have a variety of things to do for entertainment, Memphis is way better.

They should leave Beale Street, Autozone Park and maybe the Peabody standing, and cut the rest of that craphole off into the river.  I've lived an hour away from there all my life.  Been there more times than I can count.  I've always hated the city.

I don't go to Memphis nowadays without my .38 in the middle compartment.  Somebody gets shot there damn near every day.
