I'd take Chris Duncan.  Not really.  I haven't seen Gehrig's name mentioned yet.

Read up the thread :)
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Ruth as a pitcher is also decieving.  Name the top hitter he faced as a pitcher.  I think one year when Ruth had 50+ dingers the #2 HR hitter had 11.
the guy with the highest lifetime average- Ty Cobb, the guy with the 3rd highest lifetime average Shoeless Joe, the 6th highest Tris Speaker.

When you've got a bunch of slow white guys patrolling the outfield, quite a few balls fall in for hits that would be outs today.
If you don't know, now you know.

Ruth was an above average pitcher and a great hitter.
Which was exactly my point from the start and why I would pick him #1. so you can throw the rest of that argument out the window as far as this particular topic is concerned.

You have no real way of knowing if they were slow or not unless you were there then.

I'm a little late, but my starter would be Pedro who absolutely dominated in the steroid era.  Some position players I haven't seen mentioned yet: Mike Schmidt, Roberto Clemente, Johnny Bench, and Pete Rose.

outfields were MUCH larger than they are today. fields with 350-430-350 were not uncommon, so even the fastest players had problems covering that area.

Dude there are some huge outfields now. Just look around.  A new place is now generally constructed around the type of team you intend to field year in and year out.

Really slow?  You kidding me.  Just because a player is white doesn't mean he is slow.  You think the MIck was slow before the blown knee?  All I ever heard was he was the fastest ever in the game from home to first.  Leads me to believe he could cover some ground in the outfield as well.  Probably the second fastest player in the game today is Brett Gardner.  Maybe the fastest.  Between he and Carl Crawford.

Let's make some waves.

I'm quite sure if you took an average of speed of baseball players in 1916-17 and compared it to today's players, today's players would win, easily.  And yes, I think white's are slower than blacks on average.

Yes Mickey Mantle was uber fast.  He didn't play in 1916-17 did he chief?

This whole argument that yesteray's players could make it in todays game is asinine.  Sure the superstars of yesteryear could make teams today, but on average today's players are bigger, faster and stronger.  Anyone who would argue with that has a sub 70 IQ.
If you don't know, now you know.

I am also quite sure todays baseball is better, and bats, and gloves, and airplanes on every trip, training facilities and on and on.  Yes Chief on average players are better conditioned and have more advantages today.  Anyone that thinks those players couldn't compete with today's given todays advantages must have the sub 70 IQ.

They are bigger, stronger and faster because of this.  They didn't magically become genetically superior.
Let's make some waves.

those are just a few of the old fields, I'm sure you know how much bigger these fields were than todays 330-400-330 fields.  It makes a huge difference.

I'm going with Bonds. I'm particularly looking at the 2004 version. Dude had an on base percentage of .609!!! That's ridiculous. And as far as not being able to be around him, I think I could forgive a lot when we win the world series (I know Bonds never won it, but that was more due to his surrounding talent than him, particularly late in his career). Besides, I'd much rather hang out with Bonds than Cobb.
