Pitino calls NET rankings 'fraudulent'

Laments St. John's missing NCAA Tournament

St. John's had one of the most interesting seasons of any team in the country, but the Red Storm came up just short of the NCAA Tournament field when it was announced on Sunday evening.

And coach Rick Pitino was not happy with the metrics that led to that decision.

He opened fire on the NET rankings, one of the primary factors in the NCAA Tournament decision-making process, blasting them and calling for their use to end.

"I mean we're 32 in the NET. I mean first of all I think we should all probably never mention that word again, because I think it's fraudulent," Pitino said. "My son was 25 in the NET and he was saying he wasn't in with 25 wins. So I think the NET's something that shouldn't even be mentioned anymore."

Pitino's son, Richard Pitino, did make it into the tournament with New Mexico, though the Lobos earned a bid by virtue of winning the Mountain West tournament. Whether they'd have been a similar victim of fate like St. John's had they not is a question that won't be answered.

But for Pitino's squad, a remarkable close to the season was met with disappointment.

After Pitino shredded his team and went full scorched earth following a 68-62 loss to Seton Hall, St. John's went on to win its next six games. The run was ended in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament with a loss to UConn, which earned a No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Big East did get three teams into the field of 68.

Report: A&M, Purdue set for 2024-25 men's basketball matchup

A&M will face national runner-up Purdue in a big-time out-of-conference game in December, according to Jon Rothstein.

The Aggies and Boilermakers will meet Saturday, Dec. 14 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse

According to Chris Reynolds, the United Center in Chicago and Champions Classic Event are "highly motivated" to replace Kentucky with Arkansas in 2024 and beyond.

The non-conference schedule could look quite different this year.

Word out of Chicago is that the United Center and Champions Classic Event organizers are "extremely motivated" to get Arkansas in the Champions Classic in place of Kentucky to represent to SEC for the event in 2024 and onwards sources tell 247.

LSU will be the fourth team in the inaugural Greenbrier Tip-Off, multiple sources told College Hoops Today.

There is no timetable on an official announcement.

Wisconsin, Pitt, and UCF are the other three teams in the event.

NIL-driven college basketball invitational in Las Vegas to feature 2 SEC teams, per report

"Players Era Festival," a Thanksgiving-week event on the Las Vegas Strip is generating a lot of buzz in the college basketball world. In addition to three days of games (off on Thanksgiving Day) featuring eight schools in 2024, the festival is set to feature live music and other events for fans. What's truly setting "Players Era" apart from other "feast week" hoops events is NIL.

According to Matt Norlander and Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, Players Era is offering some big-time NIL contributions. The eight participating schools in 2024 will receive $1 million payouts to NIL collectives. In addition, player participants will have the opportunity to sign long-term NIL contract for further earning opportunities.

Alabama and Texas A&M will reportedly be part of the 2024 event, along with Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Rutgers and San Diego State. The eighth team is reportedly being decided from a "small group."

Tuesday's report indicates that the above seven schools have signed a three-year agreement. In 2025, plans are to expand to 16 teams. Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, Michigan, Syracuse and Virginia have reportedly engaged in discussions for 2025.

Two participants in the 2024 NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight will meet again during the 2024-25 season as Jon Rothstein reports that Illinois and Alabama are arranging a two-year series.

Rothstein broke the news Wednesday morning, writing that the Tide and Illini will clash on two semi-neutral courts in the next two seasons
