About a year ago, this became an issue defensively. Auburn, then Missouri and Ohio State hit 21 explosive plays in the final three games.

Ultimately, it was a key factor in Alabama's season's premature ending.

Now, it's the offensive catalyst for the Crimson Tide's rebirth.

Big plays, not just on offense, have carried Alabama to a few wins in a seven-game streak since the Ole Miss loss. It also explains how Alabama is second in the playoff rankings while ranking No. 100 in third-down conversions. When Alabama's scoring, third downs don't typically factor into the equation.

In the six SEC games since falling to the Rebels, Alabama's 22 touchdowns needed an average of 3.6 plays. In the same span following the 2014 loss to Ole Miss, Alabama touchdown drives took 6.3 plays a piece.

This year's number is skewed a little by another factor not present last fall. Alabama's scored six non-offensive touchdowns in the last six games. A year ago in the span? Zero...
