I agree with him, but he shouldn't be throwing stones. The triangle offense, while admittedly (previously?) effective (when one or two of the best players in the world participate) is rubbish to watch and even less fun to run. Not much better than iso-ball in my opinion. I prefer Golden State's looping motion or whatever it's called offense.
I support the Razorbacks in the city that never sleeps.

Phil needs to focus on his managerial duties and not King James. Bron isn't the only one traveling in the NBA. Phil seems to be starving for attention, after saying a 3 point shooting team couldn't win a title.

I think Phil needs to worry about the Knicks being a competitive team rather than someone that has been to 5 straight Finals.

Lebron has got to have the most haters of any athlete ever, I don't understand it.  While I'm not a big fan of his personality it's obvious he's the greatest player of this generation and it's fun watching him play, the ratings for NBA Finals this year proves that.

And it's funny how when things aren't going your way all of the sudden something is wrong with the game.  If LeBron was on the Knicks right now leading them to NBA finals guaranteed Phil wouldn't have any problems with how the game is being played.  And it's hypocritical that he would make the comment about it just being 4 guys watching 1 guy play, when he's someone that coached Kobe Bryant who's arguably the biggest ball hog of all-time and numbers back that statement up.  Phil is just bitter because things aren't going his way, nothing is wrong with the game, there's more viewers than ever and it's continuing to grow.

Good grief, he clearly said he used Lebron as an example of a widespread problem. And not one thing he said was incorrect. I quit watching the nba a long time ago because of many of the things he cited. If I want to watch guys run while holding a ball, I will watch football. If I want to see pushing and checks, I will watch hockey. If I want to watch big guys stand around staring at each other, I can watch WWE.

Saw this on Facebook.

And this has what to do with the WAY the game is played?  He did not say Lebron was not a great player. He said the game, overall, is ugly.

Guess I should have posted that in the other thread. My apologies.

This is what it looks like when someone is trying to defend their NBA legacy, when their systems no longer lead the style of play in the league.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. How many steps did he take at around the :30 mark in that first Youtube?  Five?  Six?  And then he has the nerve to complain to the official that he was fouled?

^^^This!!!! I have utmost respect for PJ but this is nothing more than an old man with sour grapes. Did we really see crisp passing and ball movement with the Bulls with Jordan? I seem to remember Jordan with the ball most possessions and used to either break his man down or hit open shooters if the defense collapsed, the same thing PJ is complaining out. Also I don't remember him complaining about how Jordan routinely got away with palming the ball off the dribble, walking, or using his free hand to push guys away to get separation for his jump shot. Nothing to see here but an old guy complaining about the new kings of the league whilst his triangle is producing a team that's getting a lottery pick.

It's hard to deny the fundamentals of the game have been declining for decades. Same with officiating

Except that every objective standard for measuring them--  things like unforced turnover rates, shooting percentages,  player efficiency--  has shown there is no decline at all.

The idea that Phil complains about how many steps LeBron gets is pretty funny.

Phil sure does look younger, there, when complaining about the playoff call of a 5 stepper.

Do those those objective standards account for the NBA changing the rules to allow for more open lanes, fewer hard fouls, and more liberally called  ejections for openly physical defense?

The stats may be similar between eras, but it's hardly the same game.

The irony of Phil's diatribe isn't that he's wrong.  It's that many of the current rules were put in place to benefit his star players.

husker71

his teammate with the knicks (and one of my favorite players) Earl Monroe palmed the ball all the time   but since I liked him I don't care   we just have to wait and see if Jackson can turn this team around  but it all starts tomorrow night

Agree here. Change can be hard, but every sport evolves. You either change with it or get left behind. NBA is thriving. Hard to argue something that's subjective over that.

It's funny. When the Spurs won last year it was because they play the game the right way, with beautiful passing and unselfishness. Cavs Vs. Warriors the very next year have apparently destroyed the game. C'mon Phil. SMH.

Yikes, this is an embarrassing post, even for you hogsanity.  It's not the 1990s or 2000s anymore.  And it's not the And 1 mix tape tour.

If you aren't skilled, you don't play in the new NBA.  Period.  If you are a one dimensional scorer, teams will look to ship you off faster than ever these days.

Big men are expected to protect the rim AND knock down jumpers.  If you do one or the either then you had better be elit at it.

And the skill level and basketball IQ of the elite players is off the charts.

Well, there are.   And it really isn't even that close.

You have the best PF to ever play the game, playing this moment.  You have arguably the 2nd best PF to ever play, playing at this moment.  You have arguably the best SF of all time playing right now.  You have probably the 2nd best PG of All-Time playing at this moment.  You have the 2nd best SG still on a roster-- and that's before touching on guys who have the potential to be all-timers, or young players who are just getting their career underway.

I loved the NBA of the 80s, but I do remember its flaws.   I enjoyed the NBA of the 90s, though the game began to stagnate.  I soldiered on through the '00s, and a dark era of basketball.   Now, we're in a new Golden Era of the NBA, and people are still conditioned to think its 2005.

Exactly.  People were burned after MJ retired.  It was a combination of every semi-decent guard being christened "the next MJ", the crap like the And 1 mix-tape tour, and the NBA itself being big man dominated (boring to watch).

It was just a bad combo, and for some reason people still think the game is played that way.

I still say it's a bunch of old codgers too proud and stuck in their ways to acknowledge greatness.

Its the same people who deride the modern game as being  'nothing but Iso play', when, if they actually watched it, they'd see Isos are the either the least, or second least (depending on team) type of offensive set used in the league.

Never did I say the players are not skilled.  But you surly won't try to deny that much of the offense is someone like Lebron simply bulling their way to the basket.

As for the "greatest" ever talk, that is impossible to quantify as players from other eras did not get to play with todays rules, and vice versa.

I like watching the Spurs play, Golden State, and OKC too, the Clippers are fun to watch.

Phil is whining a lot these days.  I'm thinking he's frustrated that putting together a championship team is a little harder when Kobe, Shaq, MJ, and Pippen aren't on your roster.
