Dirty DVD Player

My DVD player is not playing my DVDs properly.  It has what I think is static, popping, freezing and sometimes doesn't have any sound.  I've tried one of those cleaning discs and a can of air to blow out the dust but it only slightly improved the quality of play.  Have any of you had similar problems and if so what did you do to fix it?
