3 thoughts on #LSU basketball: Better at home, close calls, deceiving defense | @dandydonlsu| http://s.nola.com/0m6uxgL  via @nolanews

QuoteThe weird part of the equation is that when LSU has ventured away from home so far in conference play, the Tigers have been tough as nails with three wins in a row, two of those in close calls after an overtime loss at Missouri to begin the SEC campaign.

2) Close calls = toughened team

Games going down to the wire may not always be what rabid fans hope for, but with a conference that has taken a step forward competition-wise like the SEC has this season, that seems to be the lay of the land.

The numbers keep growing for LSU: Five of six conference games have been decided by 7 points or fewer and three in overtime.

By now, having to grind out a game from tip to finish is old hat to the Tigers and that bodes well for not only if/when they get to the NCAA Tournament this March, but also the future with at least five veterans poised to return who are having their mettle tested on a nightly basis.

#LSU backcourt players have made their diverse presence felt this season  http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2015/01/lsu_backcourt_players_have_mad.html ...

QuoteSTARKVILLE, Miss. -- Coaches expect a lot out of their guards, especially when the coach was a decent one himself as a player. In the case of LSU, the expectations are pretty much uniform no matter which guard has the ball in his hands.

In an era when specific basketball positions are becoming blurrier than ever, the Tigers' backcourt is a perfect example of players morphing into interchangeable parts.

With a three-game head of steam, the Tigers (16-4, 5-2 SEC) are back in action against Mississippi State (9-11, 2-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Humphrey Coliseum.

"It makes us dangerous because other teams can't (focus) on one person," said Quarterman, the biggest backcourt player for LSU at 6-foot-6 and arguably the Tigers' most valuable player this season, averaging 12.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists as the sixth man.

"They have to look at all of us. We have some similarities, but we give different looks, too, especially at the point guard position."

Indeed, the 6-4 Keith Hornsby has given the Tigers a bigger 2-guard option than last season when 5-9 Andre Stringer often filled that role, and trio manning the lead guard position for LSU keeps opponents guessing.

Starter Josh Gray, though he has been up-and-down, is handling most of the traditional point-guard duties. Quarterman was primarily a backup there last season and has evolved into a hybrid. And freshman Jalyn Patterson has fit right in as an lead guard who possesses an outside shooting threat and is also a steady ball handler, especially against pressure defenses.

What makes those three unique as a group is that none of them has to be unique individually.

No 'Gray is the ball handler,' 'Quarterman is the defensive specialist' or 'Patterson is the designated shot-maker.'

Instead, Tigers coach Johnny Jones expects any of the three to be ready and willing to fill any of those roles, especially on defense. And when two of them are on the court, which has been more often than not, their combined value is even stronger.

LSU coach Johnny Jones sounds optimistic that A) Jalyn Patterson will be cleared to play; B) Jordan Mickey will heal up before Auburn game.

Patterson has been on the shelf with an apparent concussion and Mickey tweaked a foot/ankle late in loss at Miss. State.

LSU badly needs those two healthy for the 3-in-5 stretch on the horizon. Missing Patterson has been huge vs. Carolina, Miss. State.

Starting lineup shuffle lights fire under Tigers: Ron Higgins http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2015/02

QuoteThe most surprising thing about LSU's 71-60 victory over Alabama Saturday in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center was:

After a string of close games and two straight losses to teams with inferior talent, LSU coach Johnny Jones changed his starting lineup, most notably inserting sophomore Tim Quarterman at point guard.
A crowd of 10,355 attended, phenomenal considering the Tigers' lethargic play of late. Those $5 upper level tickets certainly helped the cause.
LSU committed fewer than 14 turnovers for the first time this season in SEC play, including no miscues off inbounds plays (a minor miracle).
After missing 13 of their first 24 free throws, the Tigers made their last 12 of 14 including 10 straight at one point.

All of the above added up to a much-needed shot of confidence for LSU (17-6 overall, 6-4 in the SEC) heading into Tuesday's home game against No. 1 and unbeaten Kentucky.

Our early look at notes and lineups for LSU-Kentucky -- Opening Tip: Kentucky at #LSU http://blogs.theadvocate.com/fullcourtpress/2015/02/10/opening-tip-kentucky-lsu/ ...

QuoteWhat: Kentucky (23-0, 10-0 SEC) at LSU (17-6, 6-4 SEC)
When: 6 p.m. Tuesday
Where: Pete Maravich Assembly Center
All-time series: Kentucky leads 85-25

LSU sophomore forward Jordan Mickey is working on a streak of three consecutive games with at least 23 points and 12 rebounds. Mickey had 25 points and 20 rebounds at Mississippi State, then had 23 and 12 vs. Auburn and 24 and 12 in a victory over Alabama on Saturday night.

One of the reasons LSU coach Johnny Jones moved freshman guard Jalyn Patterson into the starting lineup was because of his ability to take care of the ball. Patterson, who's turned it over 14 times in 21 games, has just four in his last nine games in 228 minutes of playing time.

After going against the second-stingiest defense in SEC play in Saturday's game against Alabama, LSU's up-tempo offense will see the best in tonight's matchup with Kentucky. The undefeated Wildcats lead the league in scoring defense (51.5 points per game), field-goal defense (33.6 percent) and 3-point field-goal defense (27.3 percent). They also allow a league-low 31.3 rebounds per game and top the conference with 7.0 blocks. Of course, Kentucky isn't too shabby on offense as the 'Cats are tied for second in field-goal accuracy (46.1 percent) and are third in 3-pointers (35.3 percent).

Every time I watch LSU play I think of how much they resemble us during the Stan Heath years. They have talent but such poor coaching. Jones can recruit but he struggles mightily to put his players in the right spot and evoke consistent play.

riccoar

Virginia went down.  Kentucky is in the same boat.  Everybody playing them is playing like its the Final Four trying to be the guy that gives them their first L.  I think if we get back to having our deep rotation of 9 or 10 playing and contributing, we could knock them off in Rupp.

LSU's SEC losses have included losses to RPI +150 opponents Mizzou, Miss St and AU(home).  They have wins over Ga, OM, Fl, Bama and Tenn(18pts) with 3 of those on the road and played UK to the final buzzer with a shot to win.
