Prior to his two years at Arkansas, Chaney was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee from 2009-12. Chaney also served as offensive coordinator at Purdue under Joe Tiller from 1997-2005. From the pass-heavy attack at Purdue to the run-heavy attack at Arkansas, Chaney has coached in different offensive styles.

Where does Nick Saban go from here? A few thoughts moving forward for Alabama:

-- First, it wipes out both linebackers coaches at a time when the defense has struggled at times.

-- Both exits were by assistants who were on their second stint on Saban's staff at Alabama. Thompson was on his third round overall with Saban as he served as LSU's tight end coach at the same time as new Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

-- Thompson and Steele were known for their recruiting...

-- Steele was the second highest paid Alabama assistant ($700,000) while Thompson was seventh ($430,000).

A few names to consider moving forward:

-- Current Alabama staffer Tosh Lupoi, an analyst who works with the defense, is a former defensive line coach at Cal...

-- Former Miami linebackers coach Michael Barrow was connected to the Auburn job before Thompson was hired. He played with Cristobal, the current Alabama offensive line coach, at Miami from 1989-92...

-- Saban has rehired several former assistants in recent years, so he could look to Florida State's Sal Sunseri. He's currently making $203,000 in Tallahassee...

-- Alabama has been known to work fast making hires...

January has turned into a mad coaching carousel (which has been great for salaries). Nowhere is that craziness more pronounced than in the SEC West, still college football's most frenetic division. Auburn and Texas A&M had shaky defenses (putting it kindly), so it's out with the old and in with the new. (Alabama did the same thing offensively last year).

If you can take a coach from another rival, as the Aggies did with the hiring of John Chavis, that's double-bonus points. The fact that the hot new hires are replacing the guys who were the hot new hires just two years ago is best left unmentioned.

All this frantic motion will play out again in the future, because someone will win the SEC and everyone else won't stand for it...

Former Missouri football player Phil Pitts reportedly stepped down from his position as head coach at Helias High School in Jefferson City, Missouri, to accept a coaching position at Mizzou. Pitts played at Missouri under Gary Pinkel, who is still recruiting Helias' star tight end Hale Hentges, a 2015 Alabama commit.

"The way it worked, I accepted the job in Tampa Bay," Bajakian said. "I called up Lovie Smith and accepted it. An hour later, the CMU job opened up. Because of my history there, I think there was a natural connection. People in the administration did reach out to me, but ultimately, I felt Tampa was what was best for me, for my career and for my family."

The NFL includes more time with players and less recruiting. Bajakian still wants to be a head coach and believes this move to the NFL will open more things up for him...

Mel Tucker, most recently the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, will join Alabama's staff as the new defensive backs coach, Sports Illustrated reported Monday. Only at Alabama could a former Recruiter of the Year be brought in as an "intern."

When former Washington defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi, Rivals.com's 2010 Recruiter of the Year, surfaced at Alabama last spring, Alabama head coach Nick Saban described him as "an intern that helps us some in recruiting."

That was quite the drop in prestige given he made $350,000 as an assistant at Washington the year prior...

Alabama announced Monday that Lupoi had been promoted to an on-field role as the program's outside linebackers coach. He will be able to recruit off-campus -- he hadn't been able to until Kevin Steele and Lance Thompson left -- scout games, make outgoing phone calls to recruits and more...

Greg McElroy explains what Brian Schottenheimer brings to Georgia

Mark Richt surprised some when he hired St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottennheimer to the same role at Georgia, but former Alabama and NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Greg McElroy wasn't among them.

McElroy played under Schottenheimer as a rookie with the Jets in 2011 and believes he will transition well at Georgia.

"I really like Brian Schottenheimer, because you look, an NFL offensive coordinator transitioning into the college ranks. All you have to do is look and see what Lane Kiffin was able to do a year ago," McElroy said. "He took a receiver who had underperformed, relatively speaking, the year before, and made him into an All-American, Heisman Trophy contender and top draft pick. That's what can possibly happen at Georgia. You don't have the talent at wide receiver right now, but they do have the offensive line and running game. That's what he'll feature.

"Brian Schottenheimer, he does have a little bit of an extreme system. It's a tough system to understand. Since he's gone to St. Louis, he's simplified everything. He's made it a little more streamlined. As a result, guys have been able to adjust. Rookies have had more of an impact than what they had in years past. I would expect him to do a really nice job. He does outstanding with quarterbacks. He's a nice temperament. He gets on guys, but not really to the point where they lose confidence."

Richt cited similar philosophies as a big reason he hired Schottenheimer.

It looks like new Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom is bringing at least one coach with him from Memphis.

According to reports, the Tigers are set to hire Ryan Walters as the team's new safeties coach. Mizzou's Alex Grinch left that post Jan. 14 to become Washington State's new defensive coordinator.

Walters, 29 years old, helped Memphis finish tied for 13th in the country with 17 interceptions in 2014.
