Today, June 6. I got up to see every one of his Wimbledon victories.

Father Time has kicked his ass like everyone else.  Always enjoyed watching his matches.  Had a certain style about him I liked.  Enjoyed Jimmy Connor and McEnroe but enjoyed watching Borg the most.

To the tennis purists out there, I always thought the game would be more watchable and understandable if they just played to a certain number of points.

I get it would take some of the strategy perhaps out and eliminate the marathon matches thus rewarding the less well conditioned player.

Just my random thoughts.

Same here.  When I was a teenager I really followed tennis and I think most Americans did as well.  It was a golden age with names like Ashe, Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Tanner, Newcomb, Smith, and Laver (admittedly toward the end of his career).  The Borg-McEnroe battles in the Wimbledon finals were epics and I remember getting up early in the morning to watch them live on TV.  Borg was always my favorite too.

Tennis today is so dominated by foreigners (other than Serena on the women's side) that I just don't follow it very closely at all.

I hated Borg.  I always rooted for Connors or McEnroe against him.  I couldn't stand Ivan Lendl, either.

On the women's side, I loved Chrissy Evert and despised Martina.  I remember being in a bar in North Little Rock in the 80s with one of my buddies who lived there.  They were showing highlights of an Evert vs. Navratilova match and I said something to my friend about how I hoped Chris beat her.  This obviously butch and beefy woman gets up from a table beside us and comes over to question me about whether I had something against Martina, and why.  At first I tried to somewhat politely brush her off, but she persisted.  Finally I had enough and stood up, telling her what I said to someone at my table was none of her business and that she needed to go back to hers.

I remember wondering what she must have been thinking to approach me like that.  I was 6'5" and about 245 at the time.  Did she think she was going to intimidate me into rooting for her hero?

Dated a girl whose name was Monica.  All her siblings were named after tennis players, even though none of them ever really played tennis.  She had a brother named Bjorn.  Her nephew had trouble pronouncing his name, he simply called him "Uncle Porn."

Who didn't love Chrissy?  I thought she was a hottie when I was a teenager and Martina was, well, not a hottie.  But I'll bet she thought Chrissy was a hottie too.

Always thought Chrissie was doll but Martina was the first Serena.  She was just bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than anyone on the women's circuit and basically ate Chrissie up.  Not sure if it was just the name but the one I really enjoyed watching was Evonne Goolagong.

Martina Navratilova won her first singles major at Wimbledon in 1978.  At that time Chris Evert had seven Grand Slam singles titles.  Over the remainder of her career, until she was 32 years old in 1986, Chris won 11 more grand slams.  During those same eight years Martina won 12 more of her own.

I think it's safe to say that both Chris and Martina were entered in virtually all the same tennis majors, so it's not exactly correct to say that Martina always won.

Chris was two years older than Martina.  It figures that her prime would end before Martina's, and it seems like that is what happened.  Martina won five more slam singles titles after Chris' last.  That said...they each ended their careers with 18 grand slam singles championships.

On the court, their careers were both phenomenal.  In every other aspect, give me Chrissie eight days a week.

Dang I got old. Borg should not be that old. Chris was a hottie for sure.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

I thought Borg was one of the best ever.  I am 60 too.
