Someone to keep an eye on now is the #3 overall player in the 2017 class according to PG in Texas RHP Alex Scherff.  He decommitted from Arizona State today and is looking at other options.  While odds are that he is a top 10 pick next year and signs, but there is always the outside chance he is an impossible sign and goes to school.  He has hit 96 this summer.

Being announced on twitter that Connor Noland is announcing tomorrow.  Would be a huge pick-up for both the football and baseball programs.  I think it also means he stands a very good chance to make it to school since he will play two sports.

Would love to hear past and future conversations he has with CBB about doing both

The Under Armour AA Game will be on MLB Network this afternoon at 3 PM.  The game is held at Wrigley and commit Cole Turney will be playing in the game.  This should be the best collection of talent they have had for this game and it should rival the PG AA Game this year.

ucahogfan

In the top of the 1st, Turney smoked a 93 MPH fastball to the LCF gap for a RBI 2B.  Impressive piece of hitting by Turney who I hope makes it to campus.

He may end up being the best prospect we have gotten a commitment from.  Hell yes you hope he comes here.  He could have a Seth Beer type of season

Without a doubt.  Seth Beer would probably be a good comp for him too although Turney has better raw tools.  Beer was supposed to be a high school senior last year and had one of the best freshmen seasons in NCAA history.  He would have probably been a 1st round pick in June had he remained in school.

In Turney's 2nd AB, he draws a walk after swinging and letting go of the bat into the crowd a Wrigley.  Laid off a couple of pretty close fastballs which shows he has a good eye at the plate.

ucahogfan

On the mound in the bottom of the 4th is RHP Alex Scherff who just recently opened up his recruitment.  He is friends with several of our commits from Texas so you could think he might look at us.  He is sitting 94-97 with some good life and is said to have a very good breaking ball and change.  He is the 3rd ranked player according to PG.  While he probably never steps foot on campus, it would be good to sign him just in case.

ucahogfan

With the Area Code Games going to take place August 6-10, most of the teams have been announced and several commits will be making their way to Long Beach to participate.  There will be both the regular Games and then Underclass Games.

Zebulon Vermillion will be on the White Sox regular team.  He is a RHP from the KC area and was a teammate this past season of Joey Wentz.  While he is the only commit on the team, there are a couple of others who could sign with the Hogs as this is the team we normally have the most commits on since it is a team comprised mainly of players from the Midwest, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

2018 commits Liam Henry and Christian Franklin will be playing on the White Sox Underclass team.  The Underclass team also has 3 Arkansas players on it - Ashdown's Jaden Hill (has hit 93 this summer), Maumelle's Connor McCullough (OU commit), and Conway's Jordan Wicks.  2018 is shaping up to have a lot of top end talent in the state.

Cole Turney will be playing for the Rangers team and is the only Hog commit which is interesting considering the bulk of our 2017 class is from Texas and it is the #7 class according to PG right now.   However, you have to try out to participate in the Games so they could have just not tried out for the team.

Here is an article about Turney at the UA workouts.  He has unteachable raw power it says

Was a 5A 2nd team All-State pitcher in Texas this past year which means he was one of the top 10 pitchers at that level.  Canaan Smith was also on the 2nd team for 5A at C and Heston Kjerstad made the 1st team for OF.

ucahogfan

The Hogs picked up their 5th commitment of the 2019 class today in Little Rock Christian C Cason Tollett.  He is the 3rd C to commit for the 2019 class and is ranked as the #3 player in the state for 2019 by PBR.

It seems like DVH has finally started recruiting younger players because I can't remember having 5 commits this early considering they still have three years of high school left.

We DESPERATELY need a Turney type recruit to come to campus!  That type of player can carry us to Omaha, see AB

Really good pickup.  Another one of the kids from the EM team that we have been talking about for a few years.  He makes the 3rd player from that team to commit to Arkansas.  He can swing it and is excellent behind the plate.

PG released their National Showcase reports today and the Hogs had a bunch of commits participate.  As a reminder of the PG Grades - 10 means that they are an elite prospect while 9 means potential top 10 round pick.

Bryce Bonnin - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=365578

Bryce Bonnin is a 2017 SS/OF/RHP with a 6-0 180 lb. frame from Baytown, TX who attends Barbers Hill HS. Medium athletic build with some wiry strength and room for more. Versatile defensive player. Didn't run the sixty but is like on his feet and athletic and can play in the middle of the field. Has big arm strength from both the infield and the outfield and gets lots of carry on his throws, from a longer arm action. Right handed hitter, straight stance with a deep hand load and good rhythm into contact, has bat speed, will get out to his front side early at times and reach, has some complications in his swing but they are correctable. Two-way prospect who looked very good on the mound. Really uses his lower half well to generate power to the plate, high 3/4's arm slot, has some deception, repeated his delivery and threw strikes. Fastball topped out at 92 mph and jumped on hitters. Slider was a potential plus pitch with a very tight and sharp break and some two-plane break. Good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas.

He was rated at a 10, but his future at Arkansas is probably on the mound although it would be nice if he could play both ways.

Evan Hooper - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=369875

Evan Hooper is a 2017 OF/RHP with a 6-0 187 lb. frame from Cabot, AR who attends Cabot HS. Medium athletic build, has some strength and room for more. Very good runner, 6.52 in the sixty, very clean and athletic actions in the outfield, fields the ball cleanly and gets rid of it quickly, big crow hop, makes accurate throws with good carry, high level defensive tools. Right handed hitter, upper half swing from a high hand load, rotational upper half, level line drive swing, will need to incorporate his lower half to gain more bat speed. Good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas.

He received a grade of 9.5 which is very good.  He is solid defensively, but needs some work offensively based on his scouting report.

Heston Kjerstad - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=374834

Heston Kjerstad is a 2017 OF/IF with a 6-3 180 lb. frame from Amarillo, TX who attends Randall HS. Tall and slender young build, lots of room to get stronger. Very good runner, 6.56 in the 60, has foot quickness in the outfield, compact arm action, makes accurate throws with fair arm strength, also has played some infield but young actions there. Open stance at the plate, busy hand load, has quick hands and gets the barrel into the zone quickly, hits through the ball, was on time well with his shift and swing, has some late lift out front. Centerfield type of athlete who should continue to get better as he gets stronger. Very good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas.

He received a grade of 9 with solid tools across the board.

Hunter Milligan - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=369150

Hunter Milligan is a 2017 LHP/1B with a 6-4 215 lb. frame from Greenbrier, AR who attends Greenbrier HS. Big and strong athletic build, fairly mature physically. High 3/4's to over the top release point, plenty of upper body lean coming through, on line delivery with pretty smooth and repeatable overall mechanics. Upper 80's fastball, topped out at 90 mph, fastball comes out of his hand easily with good plane from his steep slot. Curveball is his best pitch, has very good spin and a sharp 1/7 shape and loads of depth, can really change eye angle with his curveball. Did not show a change up this outing. Around the plate with both pitches and has command potential. Good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas.

He received a grade of a 10 which means he could be a star at the collegiate level.  He has the frame which Johnson can dream of him throwing 95 at some point which would mean he would be an elite LHP with his curve and command potential.

Alerick Soulaire - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=372870

Alerick Soularie is a 2017 OF/MIF/C with a 6-0 165 lb. frame from Humble, TX who attends Atascocita HS. Wiry athletic build, lots of room to get stronger. 6.71 runner, very versatile defensive player, has played all over the field, showed his athleticism in the outfield with lots of range and good footwork at the ball, can get better extension when throwing from the outfield. Right handed hitter, deep hand load from and open stance, has quick hands and a loose and easy swing, line drive swing plane, hits to all fields. Good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas.

He graded out at 10 and looks to be a better offensive player right now than defensive player.  It would appear that we have a lot of excellent OFs in the 2017 class.

Cole Turney - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/Playerprofile.aspx?ID=378025

Cole Turney is a 2017 OF/1B/LHP with a 6-1 200 lb. frame from Richmond, TX who attends William B Travis HS. Mature very strong athletic build. Left handed hitter, very quick hands with outstanding raw bat speed, has special strength in his hands, ball explodes off the barrel when squared, has lift in his swing and can leave the yard anywhere but is a primary pull hitter. 6.69 runner, has very fundamentally sound actions in the outfield, very good footwork, plus arm strength with easy carry on his throws, right field profile. Very high ceiling talent if his Hit tool plays. Good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas. Selected for the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Turney graded out at a 10 as well and is one of the best prospects we have gotten to commit to us.  Getting him to campus would be huge, but odds are he is a very high pick next June.

He was a guy I thought we would land being from the St. Louis area.  While he only tops out at 91 right now, he is 6-8 so you can think more is in the tank.  He is a very good pitcher and excellent pick up for us.  Will be playing on the White Sox team at the ACG.

Three more commitments to announce - two from the Chicago area in the 2018 class and a SS from just north of Missouri who is in the 2019 class.

The first to commit earlier this week is big 6-6 LHP from just north of Chicago in Steven Sanchez.  He is the #10 ranked player in Illinois for the class of 2018 and our second commit from the Chicago area in the class of 2018.  He also marks the 13th commitment in the class of 2018 which is ridiculous to have as they are just beginning their junior years.

The next to commit is from Indiana, but another 6-6 LHP in the Chicago metro.  Jake Sweeney is the top ranked player in Indiana for the 2018 class and is ranked 64th in the class according to PG.  He is our 3rd top 100 commit for the 2018 according to PG along with Connor Noland and someone else.  He is the 14th commitment in the class of 2018.

Another big LHP going to Arkansas, #WPS brings aboard 6'6" 2018 Jake Sweeney. Upper 80s FB now with more coming. #64 per @PerfectGameUSA

The St. Louis Pirates summer league program provides yet another commit in 2019 SS Nolan Wosman.  I haven't found much on him, but being the sixth commit for the 2019 class as these guys are just starting their sophomore years of high school is impressive.

Vitello and Johnson are tearing it up on the recruiting trail this summer.  I know Jorn did not do much recruiting and Vitello is as good as they come in college, but having Johnson hitting the trail hard as well is paying dividends.  Our classes are filling up with excellent players early on.

PBR is now reporting that Arkansas has received a commitment from 2018 RHP Wade Beasley of Horatio.  This is another power arm from inside the State.  He was hurt this spring and has blown up this summer.

The 2018 in state class has the potential to be one of the best pitching classes Arkansas has seen.  There are 5 potential SEC level pitchers.  AR now has commitments from 3 of them (Evan Hiatt, Connor Noland, and Wade Beasley).  The other two have offers (Jayden Hill, Kaleb Hill).

That does not count a kid like Jordan Wicks who if he were 2017 or 2019 might be the top guy or Connor McCollough who is committed to Oklahoma

Tyler Johnson of Bentonville has also committed from this class as a position player.

I've updated the thread based on all of the recent commitments, but there have been so many lately that I might have missed a few.

Right now, our 2017 class is ranked #8 on PG, but is the only one in the top 10 without at least 4 top 100 commits which means it is more about the depth of the class than the upper tier of the class.  They also do not have Dylan Bonds or Ben McClain listed on the commitment list.

The 2018 class is ranked #11 on PG right now and only has 1 top 100 recruit in Jacob Sweeney who is #99.  They do not have several of the in-state players as commits as well as the unranked Texas recruits.  I can't think of a time where we have had 18 commits in a class by 14 months before they can actually sign.

PG hasn't ranked the 2019 classes yet, but you would figure ours would be highly ranked right now with essentially 7 top 250 players.

Vitello and Johnson are just simply dominating on the recruiting trail right now and I think the future of this program is very bright.  The best thing is that these classes are not full of recruits who will be top 2 round picks and sign, but a lot of very good players who will go spend three years in school and make a lot of money after that.

Whats the latest on Bennett Shoptaw? 2018 RHP from LR Christian.  Plays summer ball for East Coast Sox.  I had heard he had some interest from DVH.
"Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Throw strikes. Home plate don't move."

Shoptaw is on a lot of radars.  If his velocity continues to increase he will have a chance at the big schools.  He is unlucky in that he is in one of the deepest in state pitching classes Arkansas has had in a long long time.  The same can be said of Jordan Wicks of Conway.  If either were 2017 or 2019 they would likely be Hogs.

Arkansas's 2018 numbers are already tight and there are at least two known in state offers still out there for pitchers.  They have put themselves in a position to now be able to sit back and choose.  If Shoptaw continues to improve, he will have a shot.

Question, are the number of kids per class higher than the previous 5-10 years? I just seems every week we get a commitment or 2, I'm not complaining, just curious. I know we lose a few to the draft, but it seems our 45-50 battling for 35, and in reality 25 spots is crazy.

Not really.  We end up with about 20-25 signees historically per class even after the draft takes what it does.  The 2018 class is just filling up faster than normal which means the coaches are getting who they want early on.  I think we only take 5-7 more max in the 2018 class which means some very good players will not be able to jump on board.

I think DVH has adjusted offering players earlier on than he used too.  Remember, Hunter Milligan committed to Mississippi State a couple of years ago and most posters were wanting DVH to offer him that early as well.  I think he has seen that he should send out more offers earlier and that is why the classes are filling up faster.

2017 commits-  9 commits are ranked #1 in home states in their respective positions per PG,  Cole Turney ranked #1 outfielder in Texas and top 10 over-all player in the nation, Bryce Bonnin ranked #1 Short Stop in Texas (though now topping at 93- 94 on mound, may be legit 2 way player but doubt it will be at SS, too hard to transition from short to the mound, lots of options though) # 1 pitcher in Kansas, and Missouri and #1 Catcher from Colorado and some home grown Arkansas kids that are ranked #1 in their positions  Casey Martin SS, Even Hooper OF, and Hunter Milligan P, and along with Missouri #1 outfielder Benjamin McClain.   Don't see how this class is not in top 5 classes in nation  with Alerick Soulaire (OF Texas) and others that add a ton of depth to this class.  Now just hope the Draft leaves this class alone, I'm sure some will get their name called, but hope they decide to get the college experience, with the strong pitching 2018 class commits has, could see multiple trips to Omaha.

Just a few updates on the upcoming classes.....

Do not sleep on 2017 in state MIF Casey Martin.  The kid has done nothing but impress at the highest level this summer.  I heard one coach say he was the best player on the field in Dallas last month at the Battle of the Borders and another one say he was in the top 10 at Jupiter this past week.

The 2018 class is loaded and they are being very selective now.

The 2019 class now is up to 8 commits with Travis Odom a SS from TN being the latest.  He plays for the East Cobb Astros, a traditional national power summer club.  This class is starting off very strong.

The 2020 in state class is already being talked about as one of the deepest in recent memory, even surpassing the 2018 class many have raved about.

AR is at its best when it has good players from in state to mix with what they will bring in from out of state.  2018 and 2020 have multiple high D1 one players.  2017 and 2019 have fewer numbers but some high level quality.

The future looks very, very bright.

Tortfeasor

Aaron Brown from Mt. Juliet, TN just decommitted from MS State. Strong RHP and hoping we can land him since we now have MSU's pitching coach and one of his teammates.

Nathan Rintz is another highly ranked member of the 2019 class which is now up to 9 verbal commitments.  He projects as a solid RHP although he does currently play 3B as well.  So far the 2019 class had mostly been position players so I would expect to see the arms start to commit.

Arkansas also received a commitment a couple of weeks ago from 2018 LHP Hank Hannah (Little Rock Catholic).  Hank is a very projectable LHP.  He has advanced offspeed stuff and a frame that would suggest his velocity will continue to increase.

PorkRyan

First 2020 commit is in.  Heston Tole 6'5" 180 RHP/1B from Bowie, Texas.
