How disrespectful is this?!?!

ESPN's feature article on the PK80 by Myron Medcalf lists ten teams from the tournament that could be in the NCAA tournament.  Sure, most of them are locks.  But he doesn't lists Arkansas and he does list Oklahoma (coming off a losing season) and Stanford (coming off a losing season and already having two losses this season to Eastern Washington and a blowout to UNC).  I get it, there's this Trae Young hype after TWO games, but still, Arkansas, after pushing the defending champs to the brink and looking good so far this year, doesn't even merit a mention as a possible tournament team?!?!

The Altman angle is the only thing we get out of the whole article:

60. Dana Altman and Oregon could face Arkansas, where Altman was the head coach for 24 hours in 2007.

61. No, really. You should go to YouTube and watch the video of Altman standing on a stage as Arkansas fans chant "Woooooo! Pig Sooie!" after he left Creighton, albeit briefly, and accepted the job. It's all quite odd. You'll root for an Oregon-Arkansas matchup after you see it, though.

And then he gets something blatantly wrong:

64. Arkansas' Mike Anderson enters his seventh season with just one NCAA tourney appearance on his résumé. He could pick up quality wins in Portland that could pay off on Selection Sunday.

Uh, ok dude. 2 of the past 3 seasons we made the tourney, and we lost to UNC both times in hard fought games.  These national writers just don't care to research Arkansas.

When we embarrass UNC they'll get noticed.

Win, and they'll notice us. Hope CMA clipped those quotes and that article and made every player read it. Should make us hungry!

We have to earn respect and then we will start receiving praise. Stop getting so bent out of shape about it. Our time is coming

PiggoBitttys

Still, a blatant inaccuracy such as number of NCAA tournaments has nothing to do with respect, and everything to do with professionalism.

rzrbackramsfan

It's very disrespectful.  Arkansas has clearly been undervalued by the media since preseason poll #1.  When you look at what other teams have coming back and what we have and how our wins stack up with others wins, it's silly not to put us in the NCAA tournament conversation.

BannerMountainMan

He apologized for saying only one tourney but he said he's not sorry for not putting them in the tourney.

Honestly, stuff like this is good. Especially for a team that's being told how great they are by everyone locally. A little dose of nobody-believes-in-us goes a long way.

exactly !  the respect we had in the '90s was earned and well deserved
Just say no to the forward facing Hog !

DuckTalesLOL

It's been updated now to show 2 tourney visits.

Arkansas desperately needs a 3 game winning streak right here.  We would go from outside looking in to lock

But if it doesn't happen let's please don't fall apart.  Just remember that, at this point, ALL TEAMS are a work in progress.  However, I will have a bad weekend (not fall apart) if we don't win one or two.

Stuff like this is not surprising.   There's a fraternity of the upper echelon pundits in college basketball, Jay Bilas, Dickie V, Seth Greenberg, Jeff Goodman, etc.  These guys for the most part are slim balls, all of them know the cheaters in college basketball and they go out of their way to praise these guys, and I believe some even help those cheaters out.  Coach Anderson is on the outside of this group, and when he talks to them he probably lets them know he doesn't care too much for them.  Just like how he called Dick Vitale out last year on his BS.  So, when you see articles from ESPN that are influenced by these guys, take it with a grain of salt, because it's extremely biased and those guys go out of their way to try to make Coach Anderson look bad.  The same way Jeff Goodman was writing articles last year saying Coach Anderson was on the hot seat, then when we went on a winning streak and was looking really good he said absolutely nothing else about us.

you shouldn't have put the word desperately. Because you are wrong

Hogs49ers

During halftime show of Tenn vs Purdue on ESPN2, Chris Spatola knows what is going on - just named us the sleeper of the SEC and had a lot of good things to say about us.  He mentioned about us having experienced senior guards (Barford and Macon) and said they are explosive players, then talked about losing Kingsley, but the true freshman Daniel Gafford has come to play so far and it getting it done.  Dalen Cuff also said he likes us, but picked Florida to be the team to beat.

Nice to hear a guy that has actually watched us play some and done a bit of research on our team.  I feel like if any media member in the country spent at least 10 minutes researching our team, they would have a hard time saying anything other than this appears to be a tourney team and has some real potential to make some noise.

Agreed.  We are not in desparate-win mode just because a few dorks, who have NEVER given the Hogs any sunshine in the best of situations, won't give them any sunshine now.  I'll never forget Dean Smith - somehow asked to do color for the 1994 NatlChamp game - when asked by the anchor (maybe Nance?) at the end of the game for a summary, the only thing he said before Nance actually cut him off in shock was, "Duke played such a great game!"  This is how anyone not from Arkansas treats and has always treated the Hogs.  Even after winning it ALL, you still can't win, so don't start calling for desperation games at this point just for the sake of respect....you won't get it.  And I'll say again...we BEAT UNC last tournament until the powers that be figured out a way to take the game away from us, and we came as close as anyone but Oregon to beating them, AND STILL no preseason respect for a team that made up for or improved upon personnel losses.  Screw national respect, just win and keep building on a drastically improving program.

Someone please make a sign at the tournament that says "Make Myron Medcalf Our B****". Go Hogs!

Just win and the respect will come. On today's Eye on College Bball poscast with Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander gave us some props and said we are one of the the most under recognized teams right now. Picked as a dar horse team to watch in PK80 and Parrish begrudgingly agreed (Memphis guy and hates giving us props). He echoed what we all know is if we respect we can earn it this weekend.

Expecting kudos for a team that hasn't accomplished anything will leave you frustrated. When your claim to fame is losing a lead and game to the eventual NC, nobody is going to take that leap and say you are good. The opportunity is on hand to make the statement if this program is indeed climbing the ladder to recognition. Recently this is where we have failed to make that statement, instead coming out with more questions than answers, hopefully this time it is different.

This whole game has been one of blatant disrespect.  Continuous replays of Okla plays, every out of bounds belongs to Okla, every reach in is a foul on us, terrible officiating!

Well in the end, the better team won.  Will ESPN pretend it didn't happen after they barely mentioned us in the promo article? Are we still not going to be in the tournament?  Let's beat UNC tomorrow and shut them all up.

OU is a really good basketball team.  We just accomplished something.

Dude, all of this stuff is great and I hope there is more and more of it.  In fact, I hope that they don't even rank us even if we do beat UNC Friday, the better for this team going forward.   Any team plays better when they know they are being taken lightly or disresrespected.

Yes they are and we took care of business with them at a neutral site. Great win against a good team away from the friendly confines of the Bud. Sets the stage for a knock down drag out with the Heels tomorrow.

Now, the announcers and pregame hype will have to focus on us, even if it is to say how bad the Heels are going to beat us tomorrow. At least we will be in the national conversation and that's good, right?
