Ron Calcagni without a doubt.   He was truly a unsung hero for a couple of great and awesome Razorback teams.....

This is my pick as well. Beat that OU Azz and the pornstash nobody can touch him

none of these were underrated, in my opinion.. they were college QB stars and lived up to the billing.  I have great memories of each of them.  LOVED watching a couple of them beat hated horn nation in person!

You don't ever hear Ron's name mentioned on any of the sports talk shows. I remember when he was with the Twisters. Came to my office talked football and saw a picture of my son playing baseball talked another hour about him and his kids. Left out of there with a order for sponsorship. Works every time with most ex players if they're in sales

and Billy Moore.   Without those two things would have been a lot different--and not  in a good way.  Amazing how fast people forget.

You may be right. But right now, most Hogs fans have an Allen hangover. We're sick of hearing that last name at QB. Cole Kelley was the best QB on the team in 2017.
But give Brandon his due...he showed steady progression over three years as the starter. Leadership in the huddle, good head for the game, and a play maker.
Cole Kelley??????????????????????????????????okaaaaaay

My choice is Fred Marshall

"The only quarterback in UA history to lead a team to a national championship, Fred Marshall cemented his place in Razorback history by leading the Razorbacks to a magical 11-0 season in 1964. A three-year letterman, Marshall assumed the starting quarterback role early in the 1964 campaign and made the most of his opportunity. The recipient of the 1964 Houston Post Award, recognizing the most outstanding player in the Southwest Conference, Marshall threw for 656 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 438 yards. He garnered All-Southwest Conference honors and earned the Crip Hall Award in his senior season in the Hogs' 44-0 rout of SMU. He engineered a historic 80-yard drive late in the fourth quarter against Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl to clinch the win and the Hogs' first football national championship. Following his Razorback career, he went on to play with Calgary of the Canadian Football League. Marshall was inducted into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor in 2003, SEC Football Legends in 2004, as well as the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame in 2016. Also in 2016, he was selected to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame."

Here's an interesting story about Marshall almost quitting the team.

Don't know consensus on Tyler Wilson...stepped in as solid backup when Mallett got hurt, followed by all-sec junior year, then senior year disaster. A warrior for sure.

Since the RB thread seems to have been a hit, I guess there is no reason we can't do one for the most underrated QB in Arkansas history as well.

1. Brad Taylor - Best passer in the 1980s. #9 in career passing yards. #12 in career passing TDs.
2. Tom Jones - Solid starter between Scanlon and Taylor. #13 in career passing yards. #13 in career passing TDs.
3. Kevin Scanlon - Capable passer and runner after Calcagni. Still holds record for best completion percentage for a season.
4. Ronny South - Starter before Montgomery in the late 1960s.
5. Greg Thomas - Predecessor to Grovey during Hatfield's tenure.
I always loves Greg Thomas. I still remember his cabbage patch celebration at the Liberty Bowl. We almost pulled that one off.

Tejano Jawg

Just considering candidates already mentioned—

-Tom Jones. Very solid for his whole career. His numbers were never gigantic enough for him to be considered as one of our greats, however, he was Player of the Game in our annihilation of Texas in 1981. As Led Zep said, he did have an odd long release. And, he spent the night at my house during an FCA weekend.

-Barry Lunney. A winner for sure. He was the high point of the Danny Ford administration. Does anyone remember he didn't start the first game?...a loss at SMU (I was there.) But took over and willed us to a good season. He really could be number 1 on this list.

-Brandon Allen. He will always get lost in Arkansas football history for a number of reasons. Mostly, I think, because people spend too much time pre-occupied with Bielema. Sure Allen ran hot and cold. I always thought he gave up on plays too early, in his first couple years. But he gutted it out and was was outstanding his last couple years. Consider these numbers—
Junior year...2,285 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, 5 interceptions.
Senior year...3,440 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, 8 interceptions.

Pretty good, and people are still luke warm on him. He threw 6 TDs in the classic overtime win vs Ole Miss. And I still say, had we kicked a chip shot to beat Miss State, his 7 TD night would be the greatest performance ever by an Arkansas quarterback.

Somewhere in here. I was thinking Lunny Jr. at first. But the Brandon Allen case is convincing.

I think the question of defining "under-rated" applies here too. For me--and both of these guys fit--it's a QB on a team that is NOT a dominant team consistently. But they rose above it. Seems there has to be an outside reason that the QB and his career sorta slips through the cracks. Brandon was very recent, yet, he probably won't be mentioned when we talk about our great QBs. And I like the point of his last Mississippi State game. As it was, his performance was legendary, but it's forgotten because we lost the game.

Fred Marshall——QB of our only national championship

I would have to go with you and the other poster who mentioned him.  Fred Marshall was a quarterback in a different era.  It hard for the younger fans to even realize how much the game has changed since then.  His stats, even those of Calcagni and Brittenum dont compare to today's numbers, but in terms of what they were asked to do, all of them deserve a lot of recognition, but Marshall would be at the top of the list for your stated reasons - he did something no other hog qb did before or has done since.

Kevin Scanlon and Brandon Allen.

It's funny what people remember and what they choose to let go of sometimes. Some fans still hold the stumble against Clint Stoerner even though he was where he was supposed to be, Burlsworth was not and being the kind of man he was, admitted it in the postgame interviews.

Bill Montgomery threw a big redzone INT in the Texass game in '69. I don't hold it against him. He should have thrown the ball away and Broyles would have sent McClard out for the FG to take a lead the Whorns couldn't have overcome, but he did a lot of great things.

Matt Jones, who could do no wrong to many fans, was the classic case of a guy who kept BOTH teams in the game. He would make a great play, usually a run or scramble and then make some of the most bone-headed throws ever. Like an INT he threw vs Texass in Fayetteville his last year.

With plenty of time remaining, he threw a Hail Mary way down the field that the Texass safety fielded like a punt to end the game. After playing probably his best game against the Whorns in Austin the year before. He was great vs OM in the 7 OT game, terrible in other games. No one ever knew which Matt Jones would show up even from one series to the next.

Scanlon played great all season in 1979 after Calcagni regressed from 77 to 78, his senior year. As someone noted, the UA season record for completion pct. still belongs to Scanlon after almost 40 years. Put a very young team on his back and got it all the way to the Sugar Bowl where we were over matched against 'Bama.

In discussing Brandon Allen, I always wonder if any of his many critics have ever suffered a shoulder injury, let alone a shoulder separation? The young man missed one game, the Derby fiasco with the big blown lead early in the Bielema regime. A taste of things to come.

BA played most of the 2013 season with that injury dogging him and he had the albatross known as Bert hanging around his neck with a still unproven WR group and a leaky defense to overcome.

To anyone who ever saw practices or scrimmages, it was very clear who the leader of that team was and who the best QB was. We had the constant chatter about how much better Austin was, until his turn came. Amazing how much he regressed in the minds of many fans when he became the starter.

I think a lot of people held the ULM meltdown against BA. Had it not been for dropped passes in the 2nd half, we would have won that game going away.

Yes, BA had problems in the clutch vs 'Bama in '14, Toledo in '15 and others. I think you have to consider who the HC was, there was no QB coach until Enos came in in '15 as Chaney apparently considered teaching the position not part of his job. At least that's what the HC said after Chaney left.

In any event, BA was clutch down the stretch in '15. If he had had Enos coaching him the whole time, I think we wouldn't have to call him under rated.
KJ Jefferson, one of only 2 QBs in UA history to go 2-0 in Bowl Games..

Not even close. He was underwhelming not underrrated. He was so underwhelming he skipped town in the middle of the night and didn't even tell his coach so the story goes. He liked to use the phrase "winner and fighter" yet he was nothing close to a fighter.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

Sebastian Tretola.

Easily overlooked.

An extremely bright moment in the Bret Bielema coaching stint at Arkansas.

Once again I raise my glass in a toast to Sebastian.

Mike Cherry and Tarvaris Jackson, and its not even close.

Jackson was the first to come to mind for me, too, but then it's hard to say he was underrated, when he hardly even played.  I'll never understand that.

Brandon Allen was sensational his senior year, but I still think he struggled before then.  Considering how he was rated highly out of high school, started 3? years and has received tons of respect, I'm not sure how anyone can say he was underrated.  I'm sure it has to do with the criticism he received his first couple of years, but I still think it was deserved.

3 of the 4 quarterbacks named by the OP were from the Holtz era and succeeded each other.  I think they all started 1-2 years and all did a good job.  Point being that if they'd started as many games as some of the others being mentioned, they probably wouldn't be underrated.

And don't forget RW3. Second highest career QB rating in Arkansas history behind only Tretola.

he did suck here for 3.5 half years he sucked the big one.

then the light switch turned on and he was clutch for half a season.

Don't get me started on Brandon Allen. If that young man had been brought along properly and treated right his first 2 years, he would have been Hell on wheels his last 2 years as a Hog. Smiley stupidly played him against a loaded Bama team his freshman year and almost destroyed his confidence, then Bret started him the next year when he wasn't ready. He should have been brought along slowly and been prepared to start his Junior year.

No doubt. I remember him being such a great passer that Hatfield Flexed his Flexbone out more than he usually liked to.

Really? I looked it up. Brad threw only 147 passes all year in his last year of 1984 which was Hatfield's first. I don't think that qualifies as flexing the flexbone.

Im only old enough to remember back to stoernor, but dare I say Brandon Allen. Starting his 1st game against Alabama definitely scarred him, but his name is on several Arkansas records for a reason.

Same boat as you, and I agree about the Allen boys.  Tyler Wilson comes to mind also.  Nobody took more of a beating and he stood in the pocket as long as he could until being hit.  That is the happy piss season of course.  He really, really deserved better as a player.

Brandon Allen was actually pretty damn good once Enos came to town.  I agree, he sucked and looked like a complete failure in seasons before.  But his determination won us quite a few games and we were all suprised to find out how wrong we were about the kid.   He certainly proved himself on the field, even if it WAS just one season.
